new sand filter: brown water staight into the pool!!!

Hi guys...

my first day on cleaning our brand new pool has been LONG and frustrating!!!
We are doing all by ourself, we DID all by ourself (from digging to concrete etc...)
No builder to ask to... as today is Sunday no pool shop to call either.

Well... the sand was in the filter since Yesterday but didn't start filtration as the water level was too low.
Today was the day! Switched on and... inlets were pouring brown water into the fresh filled pool.

We had to back wash for 10 long minutes before the water got clear!
Of course by that time the water level in the pool was too low again!

Now... before I go to kill someone at the pool store:
is it normal that brand new sand comes dirty???
We really didn't expect that!

Yes, you must backwash and rinse new sand. It is usually in the instructions for the filter.

very common. It should be RINSED very well before turning it to filter. You can also backwash then rinse. You should always rinse after you backwash,

I learned something new today! I didn't realize that. Good to know if we ever replace the sand.

I actually did backwash and rinse... so after panic I manage myself into the right way.
But I wanted to know if there was a mistake from the shop...
Good... I don't have to kill anybody!!

RTFM is one of those Army/computer lingo meanig "Read The Flaming Manual" :lol:
Never heard it?
Installation instructions for the new filter usually remind to backwash and rinse the sand (mine from Hayward did).
