Calculations with 'end of season best prices' are as follows:

Cal-hypo (70%) granules are 55$ for 18 kg or 3$/kg. Correcting for 70% (100/70 x 3$/ kg) = 4.36$/kg.
Liquid chlorine bleach is 5.99$ for a 5 L jug at 10.8%, which works out to (108/1000 x 5 = 0.540 kg/6$) =11$/kg. So, since liquid chlorine bleach does not require a solids dissolution, it is great at startup, but cal-hypo is more economical for routine use in balanced seasonal pools.

Re-Cal-Hypo: Did you factor in the water (and additional chemicals to treat replacement water) that you will need to periodically dump to waste to avoid astronomical calcium numbers?

High calcium is a non-issue due to autumnal drawdown and 50% replacement by dilute ice/snowmelt.

Yes, even selective use of Trichlor would work if you proportionally raise the FC level as the CYA level climbs. Having shorter seasons and significant annual water replacements opens up the options one has to managing a pool with various chlorine sources. In terms of side effect buildup, for every 10 ppm FC the 16 ppm salt from chlorinating liquid or bleach is the least problematic, the 7 ppm CH from Cal-Hypo is next, and the 6 ppm CYA is worst, but depending on the amount of usage and water dilution any of these could be manageable depending on the specific situation.
