It looks like this every day with minutes of effort...this pool was BLACK when I opened it. You MUST follow POOL SCHOOL to the letter. This liner is about 16 years old. We have had two liners in the 26 years this pool has been open. It has been stained brown and orange at times. Follow the directions given here and you will get these results. A TEST KIT is a must, though...

If his skimmer plate sits on the basket with a vertical inlet you go from above, some are horizontal which allows you to go through weir door. And some people I've read remove the skimmer basket altogether and put the hose pipe directly into the pvc.

Yeah, it can be a moments challenge to take that water filled hose and grab it around and put it on the skimmer plate from above....but with the skimmer basket there it collects all the big stuff instead of sending it through to the pump basket and filter.
