Cleaning the basket at the pump question

I would like to clean the basket on my sand filter. I made the mistake of taking the lid off once before, that was a wet mess lol. I have one of them rectangle covers to go over the skimmer opening on the inside of the pool, so that would stop water from that side. Is there a setting on my valve that would also keep the water from coming from the return side?


Just want to clean out the basket and put some petroleum jelly around the seal of the lid so it goes on a little easier.

Don't use Vaseline, as it will ruin the gasket. Silicone lube would be ok. If you have a multi port valve, put it to closed. Or perhaps install a valve on the return if you need too.

A tennis ball or some sort small ball works great in the skimmer. Just make sure it little bigger then hose.

A ball valve on the suction and return lines would make life much easier.

Also some multiport valves have a closed position. You could put it in the closed position and put the cover on the skimmer and you'd only get a little water out the strainer when you took the top off.

Alright, closed will keep it from coming in from the return. I'll do that then.

A closing plug in the skimmer and another in the return will stop the flow from both ends

I have a darkbuster light so the return is more of a slotted spray, not just a circle.

I was getting confused, but that's because I'm an in-ground bigot....

Bronzeback5 has an above-ground, so he's got to set the filter to closed AND put a tennis ball in the skimmer hole. Think I get it now.
