Liner replacement.....when?

How do you know when it's time to replace a vinyl liner? Pool came with the house purchased August 2014. Guessing it's about 5 years old. In ground, shape of a stop sign, 24' across in any direction. 5' ft. Deep across center, sides are 3' deep

Liner replacement is right before the sun has taken its toll and the liner becomes brittle and cracks/tears start to form. It is difficult to tell if you can get another year out of a liner, but you don't want to go through the swimming season with issues and it is better to replace it a little earlier.

So, generally, if it's still soft and pliable, it's still good?

Yes-- soft and pliable and not seriously faded or bleached out.
