refrigerator and kegerator cutaway lining with backer board

I've noticed most people are lining the insides of their refrigerator/kegerator cutaways with cement/backer board. I was wondering if this really necessary, and if it would be better to not line the inside which would allow for better ventilation of the refrigerator equipment?

Its not necessary and as you suggest might be counterproductive. My ODK refrigerator space has ventilation cutouts to allow the heat generated by the fridge to dissipate.

Most of it is for looks.
