I replaced the Kreepy Krauly that the previous house owner left with a Poolvergnuegen "The PoolCleaner". Very happy with it. Quiet, doesn't get stuck in corners, works over a wide range of pump speeds.

Welcome to the forum, Jeff! I don't have a robot, so I can't really help you. Just a couple of questions to get the discussion going. Has the cleaner been working fine until now, and the problem just started? Or is this a new cleaner?

You should be able to just replace broken hose segments and/or connectors.

I suspect that with the hose leaking the cleaner can't pull with the required force to straighten out the entanglement anymore. Replace the broken hose segments and it'll likely be OK again. Or you have found evidence for quantum entanglement in multidimensional pool hose strings. Who knows 🤷‍♂️

Can't give you much advice on robots, been using a Poolvergnügen myself. Generally happy with it. But yes, larger leaves are a problem. Should you buy a robot, please share your success with nuclear Aussie leaves, and if the robot is doing a better job with them than the suction cleaner.

You have a variable speed pump, right? You could also try to vac to waste on really low pump speed, that might reduce the waste a bit. But my experience is that a certain speed is needed so that the stuff gets vacuumed up before it has a chance to puff up.

Pool noodles are great. I use a chunk as a floater on my home made frog ramp. Initially built as a blue tongue lizard ramp, therefore a bit sturdier. Kookaburras took the blueies, left it in the pool for frogs, but they seem to prefer the ride through the suction cleaner to the ramp.

I actually thought that both holes would be working, and that's why you were thinking about that basket. The skimmer gets pretty useless anyway, if it's only the regulator valve drawing water in. But at least it keeps chlorinated water inside the skimmer box. I still have to remove the cleaner...

You can give it a go. Do I get that right that both holes in your skimmer box are pulling in water, one through the hose, and one through the basket keeping skimming going? In that case it could help to have the adjuster valve outside the skimmer box, where the leave density would be highest...

You shouldn't have to manipulate the leaf basket. Usually, in the skimmer there is a ledge for a vacuum plate - just a plate with a rubber seal and a hole for the cleaner hose, like in the picture in my first post. Then you can just leave the normal leaf basket in the skimmer, under the vacuum...

You need something to catch larger debris before it gets to the pump. You could either try a vacuum plate for the skimmer, so you can leave the basket in, or use an inline leaf catcher.

As stated above, you need to control the suction either by pump speed, a three way valve, or an adjustable valve at the suction port. If you are connecting the cleaner through a plate with the skimmer, you can also get a skimmer plate with integrated valve. They are designed as "auto skimmer...

Another option is to get a vacuum plate for the skimmer. I plug mine in like that. The advantage of that is that you can leave the skimmer basket in. In any case, you might need some sort of adapter to make it fit. But you can usually get a vacuum plate with a hole size that fits your hose...
