No chlorine in salt water pool! Test positive for phosphates and nitrates

I will add that it will be impossible to follow the SLAM process without your own proper test kit. If you want to take control of your pool, you will need a TF-100 or K-2006. Link is in my signature.

    Leslie's pH Lock

So according to their website, I would need about $430 worth of this product for my pool. 1 quart treats 500 gallons, and my pool is about 13,500 gallons. I would need 27 quarts, times $15.99 a quart. Think they would give me a bulk purchase discount? Do people seriously pay over $400 for just 1...

    Leslie's pH Lock

I was looking for CYA on Leslie's website to compare prices with the other local stores (they are EXPENSIVE) and I came across this so-called pH Lock. I can't see what chemicals are in it, so I don't know what it is. Has anyone heard of this before? I'm not going to use it, just wondering if...

    TA too high

Just keep lowering your pH when it gets high, and the pool will eventually settle at its happy spot for TA.

    resource for borax?

You do understand that those pucks are adding to your (already high) CYA, right? You might want to re-read Pool School again. With a CYA of 80, chlorine should never be below 6. Since you see mustard algae (you are positive it is mustard algae, right?) you will have to follow the SLAM process...

    Phosphates! and now what

FC should never be at 1.5. With a CYA of 55, FC should never be below 4. Since your pool is cloudy, you need to SLAM.

    resource for borax?

Richard, is that a standard 4.whatever pound box of Borax? It looks larger than the ones I get, which are tall and skinny.

Fact or Fiction? Aircraft flying over your pool can affect y

Re: Fact or Fiction? Aircraft flying over your pool can affe Can't believe I missed this whole thread. There's always planes flying over my pool from the local airport, both military and General Aviation. Can't believe I haven't noticed any problems yet.

Fire in my pump room partially melted acid jugs

Sounds like you have a fun project going on there. I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of the process if you don't mind. If you want to share, start up a new thread in the Coffee Bar. I'd love to see the restoration.

Fire in my pump room partially melted acid jugs

Okay, I have to ask. What kind of car is it? I've got an 87 Camaro IROC Z I've been slowly working on.

If adding borates now is a good idea?

If you close the pool correctly, you will not get the bacteria, and your CYA will not go down to 0. Last year I closed with chlorine at shock level, and my CYA went down only from my water replacement. If you want to keep the algae from coming back, you need to SLAM the pool. That will use a lot...

    CYA reduction with Sodium Hypochlorite

Ok, so melamine isn't a great idea. I guess if it worked without causing more problems, it would still be on the market.

If adding borates now is a good idea?

Neither borates nor CYA are consumed. Once they are in there, they stay in there. The only way either gets lowered is by splash out and backwashing (not evaporation).

    CYA reduction with Sodium Hypochlorite

That melamine theory is interesting. I would be willing to try it before this winter (I will be replacing the liner next year, so I am not worried about ruining anything.) The problem is, I don't know where to find any melamine.

In your case, the TF-100, with XL option is by far the best thing you could do for your customers and yourself.

    Staining from Trichlor puck?

You might want to go to a Poo... Pool... Pool St... (such a dirty word, I can't even say it) and get your pool tested for copper. I think they usually get that test right. Have you already drained and refilled to lower the CYA? If so, that would have lowered your copper level, too.

Muriatic Acid equivalence to dry acid?

I think it looks like it would be about 11 pounds. I figured it out by seeing what the effects of adding 1 gallon of 31.5% muriatic acid was, and then just kept increasing the amount of dry acid until it matched.

Muriatic Acid equivalence to dry acid?

Depends what baume of muriatic acid. Just like bleach, there are different strengths.

Help with fill water test please?

One last update on this topic. I had enough water collected to do another TA and pH test, and these are the results: TA 20 pH 7.0 or lower. I think on my last test there was some Borax residue left in my pitcher, so that would explain the high readings.

I joined this forum to learn about borates

When you do the Borates, could you post some before and after pics? I've been wanting to do this if I can ever find enough Borax. Might help counteract the acidity of my fill water. I'm always having to raise my pH, and hoping Borax might help. Also wouldn't mind the better feel of the water.

    Chlorine/CYA relationship

Yeah, with weather like this I think you just have to test and adjust every day. I've been trying to add some stabilizer to my pool, but with this rain it is impossible. I started the season having to fill up the pool with my well water, then we got 12" of rain in June, so the pool was...

Help with fill water test please?

Well, the rainwater test did not turn out at all how I thought. TA was either 60 or 70, and pH was way above 8. Although I didn't have enough water to rinse out after the TA test, and I also didn't have a full 44 mL of water for the pH test. Still, I know that the pH must be at least 8. So that...
