Water Lab Results / Newbie Questions!

You are correct that, with a CYA value of 35 (normally we round up the CYA measurement as the tube is only graduated in 10 ppm), an FC of 14 is at shock level. How long ago did you add CYA? It can take several days (4-7) for the CYA to fully dissolve and register in the test solution. As you...

Water Lab Results / Newbie Questions!

If you leave your CYA at 35 and the pool gets some sunlight, the "excess" FC will burn off. However, with a CC of 1.0 there may be something organic, e.g., algae, trying to get a "foothold" in your pool. Is your water crystal clear or a bit cloudy? I suggest you read (if you haven't already)...

Water Lab Results / Newbie Questions!

No need to do the FC test with a 25 ml water sample. Save your 871 reagent and do the FC test with a 10 ml pool water sample. An +/-0.5 FC accuracy will be sufficient to get your pool water balanced. (Please note an FC above 10 ppm renders the pH test invalid.) The sample turning dark red is an...

    Cartridge Filter Cleaning Accessories? Necessary?

FWIW, I use a diluted solution of Simple Green to soak my cartridge filters overnight. I place them in a large (>55 gal) trash can and add about 1 quart of Simple Green then fill the can to cover the cartridges. They soak overnight (I have two sets of cartridges so the pool is never without...

    Adding boric acid

If you put your values into PoolMath, what is the result? By my estimation adding 54 lbs of boric acid will raise your borate level to about 60ppm. Is that what you need? Also adding that amount of boric acid will lower your pH by about .3 which could bring down your TA also. The experts on this...

    All kinds of issues!

Welcome to Trouble Free Pool! You've come to right place to learn how to take control of your pool and enjoy it–not loath it. The most important thing is stop taking your water to the Pool $tore and get your own testing kit. In order to properly help you with your water balance we'll need a full...

Taylor testing result and local pool-store testing result differ a lot

If your testing with the Taylor kit (Which Taylor kit?) has been tracking similar results all season, I suspect the pool $tore is wrong. Generally, a pool using an SWG for sanitizing will have a rise in pH versus a drop in pH. I would not add pH+ until you test again yourself. BTW, you...

    How many gallons?

If I'm reading the drawing correctly, the main part of the pool can be considered a rectangle of 14' x 36'. If we assume an average depth of 6' and add a bit for the curved portions of your pool (outside the main rectangle), 22000 gallons should be close enough to get you started.

Clearing a swamp pool - need help!

Welcome to the TFP forum! A few questions: 1) What kind of test kit do you have? If it is one of our recommended (Taylor K-2006 or TF-100) that's good! 2) Can you add a signature to your posts? Simply click on "Settings" at the top of the page and scroll down to you see "Edit Signature" in the...

    brand new pool-solar cover question

I can't tell you exactly how much bleach to add because I don't know the volume of your pool. But I can guess it is about a 13500 gallons based on your first post saying it was a 24' round AG pool (I assumed it was 4' deep). Using the PoolMath calculator (at the top of this page) you'll need to...

Help me with my test results!

The order of the chemicals is not very important. I would add the muriatic acid (MA) first. My reasoning is because when the chlorine level is too high (above 10 PPM) the pH test is not accurate. However, if you have no chlorine in the pool, I'd definitely get some in there first! It's best...

My Salt Generator Is Not Making Chlorine.

Even with the appropriate CYA values, you'll need to add chlorine every day. However, you'll only need to add MA about once per week to control the rise in pH due the carbonation effect of an SWG. I totally agree with chiefwej, I would not own a pool without an SWG.

Help me with my test results!

New to TFP first time SLAM feeling not knowing what I am doing

I suggest you pick one spot in your pool to test the water. Invert the test tube and reach in to the pool about 12-18" deep; then turn the tube upright to get a sample. Waiting 30 minutes to test again is fine. Leave the pH right where it is until you complete the SLAM.

    Green to clear?

The best thing to do is open a can of POP–Pool Owner Patience. Your pool did not get green 2 days and it will not clear in 2 days. I'm not certain but I'll bet the average time it takes to complete a SLAM properly is about a week. Do not despair and stop the process! Keep up with the SLAM...

Going to try to do it myself with a bit of back story.

CYA of 55 (most likely it is 60) is fine just don't let it get any higher! Depending on how your Nature 2 chlorinator is plumbed, it is possible that the pressure from your pump has accelerated the amount of Chlorine and CYA into your pool. Since your pool is so new, I recommend you visit the...

Questions for After Refill is Complete

spinPHD, you've got it figured out! The TFP method of pool is just that–simple, effective and inexpensive! Mr. Bruce is correct. Here in AZ holding your CYA closer to the high end of the range is better (I run mine at 60 but my pool is in full sun all day) for chlorine loss.

    New guy with algae problem!

Getting a proper test kit is the best first step you can make! Nearly everyone on this forum has been in your situation. If you read the Pool School articles (probably a few times!) you will understand why it is so important to test your own pool water and not let some Pool $tore clerk (who...

    Monthly chemical costs

Like JoyfulNoise, I spend no more than $40 per month in the summer. Of that amount, $30 is for the electricity cost to run the pump and SWG. The rest of that is for Muriatic Acid and running my robotic cleaner. I originally relied on a Pool $tore for testing and chemistry advice. Within 6...

    Still in the Planning Stage

I have an A&A in-floor cleaner and I like it a lot. It easily takes care of most debris in my pool and keeps the water looking quite nice with minimal effort on my part. If you plan on a pool heater, an in-floor system will distribute the warmed water much better than simple return jets...

Can't get those tiny dust particles out! Any ideas?

A Zenit 10 appears to be a euro version of the Nautilus plus. Definitely check the impeller for debris. The owners manual has a good picture showing how to do that:http://manuals.maytronics.com/images/chapters/top8/big/filter/impeller_cover1.jpg. Additionally, be certain you are using the fine...

Can't get those tiny dust particles out! Any ideas?

What model of Dolphin Robotic cleaner do you have? Some of the newer models have ultra-fine filters and can vacuum dust particles pretty well. My Nautilus Plus has such filters and I'm always amazed by the amount of fine dust-like particles it picks up. I suggest you carefully check your robot...

    Pump Leaking at PVC union

I believe the lack of a gasket doesn't mean it won't seal. In fact, if it required a gasket and it was missing the entire union would be pouring out water, not just a single stream. When you removed the union nut did you notice any cracks on the male threads on the pump side? The stream of water...

    Help! Can't shake the flakes

I'm not an expert, but what I've learned from this website has allowed me to care for my pool easily and cheaply. The turbulent water flow through the SWG acts like aeration and raises the pH of the water (think of carbonated water). Putting 2 cups of Muriatic Acid (MA) a day is not uncommon...

    Need help with my SLAM

Another thought regarding the high chlorine use could be the age of the chlorine. Is the 10% bleach fresh? Liquid chlorine loses potency very quickly. FOR HIGH QUALITY CHLORINE (lower quality chlorine will degrade faster) 12.5% chlorinating liquid at even 90F will have a half-life of around 70...

Cloudy pool after algae clean up, Chlorine level reads dark orange

Welcome to the right place forgetting your pool crystal clear! I understand your frustration. Well I'm not an expert but I expect one of our gurus to chime in soon. Firstly, your signature block has not shown up on your post so we're missing important data (pool size, etc.). From what I can gather you are winning the battle against algae. Remember, it didn't grow overnight and it won't...
