Brand new pool, help please :)

You have some type of metal in your water, whether it is copper or iron, metals cause the green hair, not the chlorine. You should have it tested for type and amount.

How full is too full to the skimmer?

I actually like to keep mine about 1/2-3/4" from the top of the skimmer face inside the pool. I found that it doesn't draw any more or any less junk off the top by having less water than that and I like my pool as deep as possible. Luckily our skimmer is installed at the very top of the wall...

Protection from legal action for accidents

Depends on where you live. Rural people may not have the same requirements as IN city limits. We did make sure of insurance coverage. My rules are the same regardless, parents must supervise their own children, if the childs chin is not above the water while standing, they must wear a life...

couldnt stay away from pool store

Put it in a sock, either hang it in front of the return or you can put the sock in the skimmer as long as it is running the whole time. I tye mine to a chunk of pool noodle and let it float around.

    Round, Rectangular, Oval.....

What Knarf said - we have an oval as you can see from my siggie at the bottom - it just fit the space better than a round - we wanted the largest pool we could fit into our space - I can easily swim laps. If you get an oval, do not get one with the "braces" on the sides - get the buttress free...

Leaves in the pool, Brushing, and Backwash - Not a believer

Re: Leaves in the pool, Brushing, and Backwash - Not a belie Like they are saying above, it's all about getting anything organic OUT of the pool - the quicker you manually get the organic stuff out, the faster the chlorine will actually work to clear the water - it will seem like a losing...

New/Future AG Pool owner with what to buy questions

We have the Aqua Rite with a cell for an IG pool - it can be used for either. It's just that the AG version is usually smaller and has a setup for inline on the return jet. The IG versions hook up the same way on IG or AG. Oversize is correct - it does not have to work as hard then. I agree...

    What is a sequestrant?

Re: New Saltwater Pool, proper birthing order? Always be sure it is added BEFORE chlorine or it will oxidize the iron in the water and look like chocolate! First hand experience.

Ok everything is just about perfect with the BBB BUT........

Re: Ok everything is just about perfect with the BBB BUT.... We did that for a long time before we went to a SWG. It felt great and loved it. Then we thought, if it's already in there, lets make use of it. Got a SWG, so now if feels great and works for us too.

    Dichlor - where to buy?

Sams Club, Walmart, Homr Depot. Shock is not really a product but a process, most of the items thst say that in the nane have what you need. I would just use bleach and skip dichlor. Buy some stabilizer.

New to Pool School and New Pool Owner...first time on forum

Re: New to Pool School and New Pool Owner...first time on fo Start by adding a few cups of liquid bleach until you can post your water test results. Depending on your skimmer and weir (flapper) design, you may need a higher level of water, like half way up, r it may cavitate the pump...

Buying AGP package, but comes with a Nature 2 Sanitizer

I am in NW MN and probably have less swim time than you. JMHO, but any of the mineral sanitizers are a waste of money and cannot properly sanitize a pool without an oxidizing agent anyways, read chlorine. Why bother then. Also, the CYA build up from pucks or granualized trichlor builds up...

    Fairly new pool owner.....Need advice.

You should check out the quick start guide for small pools in pool school. The calculator allows yoy to enter your pool size and tells you how much of each item to add. You will need a good drops based test kit.

When to change out filter sand?

Sometimes too agressively backwashing can result in sand loss so minor additions of new sand may be needed. I have cleaned my sand and sometimes add a bit of DE to polish the water. Ive never replaced the sand.

Warning...Just seen on Fox News...make sure you get a permit

Lucky we live 10 miles from the nearest town. No permits required out here. Neighbors? um, relatives - can be a good thing or a bad thing, but lucky for us, it's all good.

How often do you top off your AGP?

I actually had to top off just twice this summer and both times were due to either splash out or the kids left the cover off on a 95 degree 25mph wind day - just after I topped it off, it rained - of course.

    When do YOU shock?

Pretty much as stated above - if I have a serious issue, such as when I put my new liner in this spring and had to fill instead of just topping off as usual. We have well water. Otherwise, something serious has to happen before it is necessary - just regular maintenence and testing keep it...

Using stabilized pucks with BBB (to make life easier)

I wonder how many people have CYA levels regularly up in the triple digit ranges? I'm betting there are more than we could guess, especially with the Big Box stores stocking shelves top to bottom with pucks and dichlor powders labelled "Shock" and people being told they only need to put some...

    SWG pool

Adding chlorine in any form when you have metals in the water will cause discoloration - sometimes yellow, brown or greenish blue. However, if you have metals and have used appropriate amounts of sequesterant will not cause the discoloration - NOT having them will. You need to get your CYA...

    Solar heater questions...

    Solar heater questions...

The panels can both warm and cool a pool depending on the temperatures in contact with the panels. You may want to build a rack to angle them for better exposure. We don't run our water through the panels at night or when the sun is off the panels - this helps to keep our temps more stable. We...
