Have you also offered her a glass of your current pool water? Run a salt test of your "no-salt" pool water - you might be surprised what's already in there.

You might have to activate "Track Borates" to get the calculations offered. I certainly have boric acid available in my PoolMath, in both, the main overview and in the "Effects of Adding".
And regarding the statement that garden grade DE is safer to handle: Pool grade DE contains crystalline silica (as a result of the heat treatment), which is required to use it as a filter, but it also makes it a carcinogen when breathed in.

If the Turkish Domestos is the same as the Australian one, then don't use it for the pool, not just bleach.

In the US you are quite spoiled to have relatively high strength household bleach available. Here in Australia for example, I haven't found anything above 4% in the shops, we usually have to go with the pool stuff. Probably health and safety regulations.
