Algae blooming nearly weekly. I can’t afford the chlorine anymore

One of the biggest problems w Algae blooms is bad chemistries of ineffective sanitation of CL w too high CYA levels. Using CL Tablets way too long will kill CL efficacy, thus algae, even if you use 5-7 bottles of bkeach. High pH’s also are an issue and promote algae growth over 8.4 i helped...

Algae blooming nearly weekly. I can’t afford the chlorine anymore

PoolsNMGame First, can you pls go back and more clearly define your current chemistries... Next, you need to redo your CYA, FC/CC=TC and your pH for starters. You have a very large pool and I suspect you got tired of adding the bleach, and while you went to tabs, the algae bloom started and...

Nbors pool is full of green algae

Well, emptied half the pool & filled it back while applying 4 gal of bleach and 2 bags mostly hypochlorite shock (no CYA). Added enough MA to bring pH down from darkest of purple I’ve ever seen to a good 7.2. Here’s the results in 26-32 hrs. Not bad huh? still a little opaque from dead...

Nbors pool is full of green algae

Thanks Herman & Bill...appreciate it. We reside in West Hou so I am not far from you Herman. And, I go to NAPCO and fill three 5 gal containers...seems like I have been doing that quite often this year. I can direct him to Pinch-Penny or W-Mart too. He also used one shock bag too. Once I...

Nbors pool is full of green algae

My nbor obviously has an issue w chemistries, mainly bc their “pool person” has used pucks for yrs. I had him drain 1/2 of his 14-15K gal pool to lower CYA, then add 3 gals of bleach as his fills his pool, and i instructed w hose. He filled it from the water source that comes from the tile...

    Composition of CL powder

Don my inquiry was to determine if a product was either like this or close to this? I helped an out of town nbor by casting 2 - 3 cups of a granular based sanitizer they had into their pool to kill a fairly tainted algae bloom. I was impressed w it’s speed of kill and clarity. Knowing from...

    Composition of CL powder

“A lot of people add the products with CYA when they don't need it and then they end up having CYA thats too high.” Yes, typical of pucks..This is the only way I have ever added CYA…but, i use infrequently to keep 40ppm CYA

    Composition of CL powder

Thanks Don… i just bought (3) 5 gal containers of 12.5% bleach. It’s also 38 miles from house 1 way…HEB Bleach used to be $2.67 8.25% for 1 gal; now it’s $3.99 for 7.25% and only 80% of a gal. My description of CL was prob poor at best, but referring to a high concentration of sanitizing...

    Composition of CL powder

Thanks CW…i did an i-net search and some do not have any CYA, but do have CA. If it only came in 95% CL w no other binders or additives, trying to ascertain the drawback? oh yes. He mentioned he had an ionizer when I asked him was someone taking care of pool while they were gone. I stated...

    Composition of CL powder

First. Happy 4th to all… Next, received a call from my nbor yesterday that their pool looked green..they’re OOT and have cameras. Yes, pool water was full of algae and also had lg patches of algae growth on steps, sun shelf, flr, etc. They had a lg bucket of pucks and smaller one of what he...

    Is this possible?

Thanks guys...I too pre-added extra CL in anticipation of rain, but did not drain pool any, esp after the first day of rain when we received only one inch. Then the next few days we had 3.5” & 4“ one night which brought out the worms. I also added more acid to keep pH in the 7.5-6 range... Two...

    Is this possible?

During the TS Beta, we had almost a foot of rain [11.8"]. I forgot to turn on my VSP overnight to low to keep the water circulating. I also had about 200-300 earth worms make it into the pool overnight. The next morning the pool water looked kind of a light green like an algae bloom in the...

    Mustard Algae question

Hello to all, If I had mustard algae and performed the proper SLAM, since I cannot brush inside the skimmer lines back to the pump or other water features inbound and outbound lines, can M-Algae hideout in there and cause problems later? If so, any solutions? Thanks, tstex

    Mustard Algae type 2

M, I would certainly apply a lot of bleach to the algae below the liner. Perhaps even removing the top 2-3 inches of soil and replacing it w sand...that would also provide a nice footing. You might want to take some of the flooring and determine if it was permeable to diffuse water through...

    Mustard Algae type 2

Brian, Try these 3 things: * bring your FC up to 18-20 ppm in the early morning [right after light] * then remove all visible debris * once all removed, turn-off your pump and view every hr...obviously this must be done on a Sat or Sun or a day you do not work... tomorrow is Saturday if your...

Brian, read this thread - I believe here's your answer: Sand filter is sending dirty water back into the pool

    Mustard Algae type 2

Brian, Of the constants you provided, let's look at them: water source; city water, liner, ladder and hoses. Can't be your liner, ladder or hoses, so the only left is water. It might not even be the water. Another constant was your DE filter that you have now removed. Look on TFP on how to...

    You're still ok - don't drop below 15 FC

    Mustard Algae type 2

Brian, Keep your FC up there as James stated and you should not have a problem. Just keep logging your results

    Mustard Algae type 2

Good deal Brian...that's a good plan I'd keep the FC in the 7-9 range for next 4-5 days..that's swimming water but just enough sting just in case Keep brushing / good job

    Mustard Algae type 2

Brian, You should buy enough PVC of the correct ID to insert the hose and divert the waste water to the street or wherever is best permitted. You don't want that water soaking into the ground to tree roots and similar. Keep applying the CL and you knock out this algae.

    Mustard Algae type 2

A nine year SLAM means I missed out on buying stock of the company selling the CL b4 the SLAM. Hopefully your refill kit will arrive soon so you can resume testing, and will fresh chemicals. I think a 40 CYA will be better than lower to achieve higher FC levels. Also, make sure you drop your...

    Mustard Algae type 2

As Dave said Brian, just keep your FC at 40 and brush often - that will get it once and for all...

    Mustard Algae type 2

Wow, 80 drops per test. That would be 8 Reg tests at FC = 5. Good luck Brian...w a FC = 40, that's a pretty strong cocktail...make sure you're running that strength through all your water features and all piping. If that doesn't get it, you may have mustard algae type 8

    Mustard Algae type 2

Brian, Being in NY, maybe you can take a live sample of your "m-algae" to a bio lab for identification/classification. FC levels of 40+ should be knocking out this stuff if administered for extended periods. The only thing that jumps out at me is you stated you've been dealing w this for 9...
