Congrats, you did a great job.

Delay between shocking and measuring baseline

I do what Dave does. I may not go around the entire perimeter unless I am adding quite a lot as could be if you have to raise shock level up very high, besides, I use 12% so the quantity is smaller than would be at 6%. I also don't have a normal return. My return is the 10 in ground pop ups...

Black algae and brown "dirt" stains

It's been my experience that it takes 4 to 6 days to be delivered in Arizona. It gets shipped right away by Duraleigh, but it just seems to sit forever out in one of the east coast FedEx stations.

Neighborhood pool has been fine, now algae infestation?

Besides what everyone else asked or recommended...Are you running the pumps 24/7? What kind of filter are you using? Have you backwashed?

Need some opinions. Clean pool or start over.

I understand and agree with you on this Mas. I helped clean up and balance 3 nasty pools, this year. All had very high levels of phosphates. One of them (the last one), the owner already had on hand a bottle of SeaKlear phosphate remover, so we used it after the initial day or so of high...

Can't get rid of the Green

Unless you keep the FC level at or above shock level constantly you are defeating your efforts. Algae grows very quickly and will consume your chlorine as fast as you put it in. So get more 12% or you can use 6% (chlorox), whatever works out cheaper in your area. Of course you need to use...

HELP -- POOL HAS BEEN GREEN-- AND SLIMY FOR MONTHS AND MONTH

OH, goodness, you must get your backwash valve fixed and inspect your filter. Dismantling the filter several times a day is way too much effort. You should normally only need to do that once or twice a year. I applaud you for doing it, though. Plus it takes so much more DE powder to reload...

A not so new idea for Black Algae

Bravo. It just really gripes me the extremely inflated prices for cheap plastic pool Crud. Good for you.

Mustard algae? pollen? at wits end...help please!

Wow! That is one interesting pool design. Sure looks cool. I'm as stumped as everyone else. You said, when you run your fingers across the area you are getting brown, orange, green dust on your fingers, which is the same colors of stain. It almost seems as though the stain is "powdering"...

Algae/Filter Problem - Pool guy says to go DE

Odd, I've never known Leslie's to not test your CYA as a standard set of tests they perform. Perhaps that's just my Leslie's, well, my DD's Leslie's always tests hers, too. Could still be an Arizona thing they always do. Unless you tell them your water has an issue, they don't always test...

    Muratic Acid

Oh dear! I don't know what those "experts" were thinking. Looking at the numbers you've given, you don't need muriatic acid added at this time, at all. Muriatic acid is used to lower pH and TA - your's are perfect for now. If your pH goes up too high, you use MA to lower it. I personally...

    Mustard Algae and treatment options

No, that's not what he is saying. He means the level you use to shock should be based on your CYA. If your CYA is high, you need to shock at a higher level to be effective. You only need to shock when your CC's get over .5 ppm

    Clear Green Water

If you are using an algaecide that has copper in it, you may be contributing to the problem. Use chlorine to kill algae. Algaecide is better at preventing and shouldn't be used in mega doses.

Laren, you have made terrific progress! Yay for you. I'm cautious like MMQ, I also would recommend keeping the level up another 24 hours.

no chlorine reading with green algai

Do you see algae? Is the water clear and green? If you don't see algae and the water is still green and with that high of a FC level over that long - it sounds like you have metals in your water. Have your water tested for metals and treat with a metal sequestreant.

    My pool is a swamp!

Hi there samiamisme! I'm in Phoenix, too. You'll get it cleaned up, in no time, with the advice given here. You definitely don't want to drain it during this heat - it needs to be below 90 to drain - and you don't need to anyway. Even if there are some bad stains, you will be surprised how...

    Green Cloudy Water

Sounds to me like it's just stuff returning from the filter. Try putting a skimmer sock on the return/s - maybe use some twist ties or something to keep it on there. You could try adding a little DE to your skimmer, so your filter filters better. Add just enough to increase the pressure 1 lb.

    Green Cloudy Water

Are you brushing your pool every day during this clean up phase? You should be. Are you actually seeing green algae or dead white algae clouding your pool? If it's white, it's dead and normal.

    Green Cloudy Water

If you use Jason's calculator JasonLion's Calculator and fill in your current readings, it tells you what your shock level is at the bottom of the page. Also, there are stickies around that point to "Ben's Best Guess" chart which shows the ideal FC and Shock levels based on the amount of CYA in...

    Struggling To Get Pool Balanced

Oh yes, algae can leave stains. If you keep your chlorine levels good, over time the stains may lessen.
