Ordered SnowJoe 50lb CaCl. Received a random brand

Hi folks. Just opened my pool and need to add in 50 lbs of CaCl to increase the calcium hardness. I ordered a 50lb bag of Snow Joe CaCl (94%) from Home Depot and have been pleased with this in the past. The product arrived today and appears to have been drop shipped directly from...

Lost Power due to Isaias. Advice on how to recover?

Isaias barreled through Massachusetts last night. I've lost power and there is no timeline to get it back up. Worried my FC is going to drop today given I can't run my pump and SWG. Advice on how to salvage the pool so I don't have to shut it down and do a SLAM / recovery for a few days? I...

Worried about CSI. High TA but low PH.

Oh OK. Did not know that. I've been worrying my plaster was going to corrode or crack if CSI got too out of whack. They should mention this in Pool School. All it says is to monitor CSI if you have a plaster pool. Thanks!

Worried about CSI. High TA but low PH.

Thanks! I use my hose to fill my pool when it needs it. Usually about 1x / week. We are on a well. No idea of the CH and TA of my well water, but I can check. Why don't I have to worry about CSI in my area? Is there an area where it is more important than others?

Worried about CSI. High TA but low PH.

Hi folks. I opened my pool by myself this year. A first! All went well and the pool looks good. I'm now dialing in the chemistry. I've got a concern because right now my CSI for my Gunite pool is -0.44. I want to get this lower. Right now I'm at: FC=13 (still reducing due to SLAM) PH =...

    Question on CYA and CC

Hey folks: I'm in my 3rd year with my 40+ year old Gunite Pool and using the TFP Method. Thanks for all the help thus far! Overall, my water is great and pretty balanced, all things considered. I've noticed a couple of things when I test recently that I'm hoping you can help me understand...

If all values are in range, why is CSI in the "Corrosive" region?

Thanks. Right now my PH is 7.4 after adding acid. So I'm at a CSI of -0.62 It will be a while before PH rises again, but CSI should drop as my pool heats up (just turned the heater on.) Do you think it's more important to keep all chemistry values in the target ranges, or is it better to...

Poolmath: Different Results in App vs Web

That did it. I don't typically track borates. But I had 15 loaded in on the web page. And zero on the app. Changing the app to 15 made them match. Many thanks!

If all values are in range, why is CSI in the "Corrosive" region?

Hi folks: I usually try to get my 32,000 gunite pool dialed in right on the recommended values for FC, PH, CH, TA, CYA, etc. I usually keep salt 3000-3200. Basically I try to follow all of the recommendations here: Water Balance for SWGs - Trouble Free Pool So my question is, if I get...

Poolmath: Different Results in App vs Web

Poolmath: Different Results in App vs Web

Hi Folks: I've got a 32,000 gallon gunite pool. Just tried using the new Poolmath App and was surprised to see the amount of acid it is recommending that I add is vastly different than what the web says. I've always used the Website and have been pleased. My PH is current 8.4 (just opened...

How critical is CSI for an old Gunite pool?

zero that I can see. But I haven't really checked. Putting the values in today it seems poolmath shows me at -0.41 Still too high but better. Will increase TA tomorrow and that will get it down.

How critical is CSI for an old Gunite pool?

Thanks all. I haven't measure CYA in a while. It was a tad low (60-70) when last I read it in July. All I know is my FC is holding (although also high). Is there a reason I should raise CYA if my FC is holding? I suppose one reason is I could potentially back down on my SWG which right now...

How critical is CSI for an old Gunite pool?

Hi folks: Just wrapping up our second season with the pool in our new home. Its a 40 year old Gunite pool. Overall, this year has been relatively easy. My FC, PH, CH, and TA have been pretty much in range all season with just a few minor corrections here and there. I did a full test of the...

Do test kit chemicals go bad?

Hi folks: Just curious if any of the drop chemicals in the test kits can go bad / expire? Mine are 2 years old (this is their second season) and they still work and change colors, etc, when expected. But the colors aren't as "vivid" as last year, etc. Thoughts? FYI I've got the TF Drop kit.

    Best practices for measuring CYA?

I'm running the pump 12 hours a day (8 AM to 8 PM). Last year I was able to keep SWG at 20% and I consistently had FC of 8-9. This year I was at 20% and I'm struggling to keep FC of 4. I upped it to 60% a few days ago and dumped in some older, liquid shock. I didn't read the FC after adding...

    Best practices for measuring CYA?

Hi folks: I'm struggling with measuring CYA. I've got the TF Test Kit and am using the squirt bottle into the graduated cylinder until the dot disappears. Yesterday I got 80ish. Today 60ish. Nothing is different. How do you guys ensure consistency? Also are you holding the cylinder from...

    To add Borates or not?

I said my water was balanced. Here are latest values: FC = 9 (still burning down from my SLAM) CC = 0 PH=7.5 CH=400 TA=70 CYA = 70 Borates = 15 My borates are low, but they are optional. What is the benefit of adding them? Is there any downside?

    To add Borates or not?

Hi folks: I'm pleased to say my water is pretty balanced. I'm pretty much right down the middle of where I should be on the "target values" on my 32,000 gallon Gunite pool. I have a SWG and I'm always fighting with rising PH. My question is should I add Borates? I've read on here it can...

Why does my PH continue to rise, even with TA in the "proper range"?

Hi folks: Have a 32,000 gallon Gunite pool. Old pool, but new owner. This was my first season. We added the SWG this spring. This site has been a wealth of knowledge. Overall, I was able to get my pool in range for most of the summer. My TA started out a bit high (110-120), but by end...

    Best way to increase CH?

So I've got my FC dialed in at last thanks to this site! Many Thanks! Now, for the first time my CH has dipped a bit low. I'm currently at 325 with target for a Gunite Pool with SWG of 350-450 I'd like to increase it to 400 just to keep it in the middle. I've seen Balance Pak 300...

Best way to lower TA with a SWG pool?

Hi folks: First year pool owner with 32K gallon, gunite pool with SWG. All chemistry values are in line with the suggested levels on this site for a plaster pool with SWG....EXCEPT for my TA. TA should be 60-80 and in reality I'm about 140-150. I know you can lower TA with muriatic acid...

How to read meniscus on TF-100 test kit.

Thanks. Even the bottom of the meniscus looks huge. I don't think it matters much with FC <15. But when you are in the 30's it matters a lot.

How to read meniscus on TF-100 test kit.

Hi Folks: I've been using my TF-100 test kit for a week or so now and have just finished a SLAM. I've got a SWG pool with CYA of 80, which means my target FC for SLAM is 31, which is high. Anyway, the TF-100 requires 10ml of pool water to do the FC test. You pour the pool water into a...

Inconsistent FC Results using TF-100 Test Kit

Hi Folks: I seem to be getting inconsistent results with my TF-100 test kit when measuring free chlorine. I'm did an OCLT last night. Target FC was 41 which is high (I accidentally overshot my target shock FC of 31 last night). This AM I got up and did the test at 5:30 AM and was trying to...

I think I'm making progress with my SLAM. How much longer?

Hi folks: Just restarted my slam yesterday. Today it seems I'm losing FC much less quickly than before. I have a salt water pool with CYA of 80. So my target SLAM FC level is 31. I ended up overshooting FC this morning and brought it up towards 40 by accident. (Poolmath always seems to...
