Getting ready for the Summer! (aka algae removal and SLAM)

We appear to have some brown/orange algae. From searching and reading prior posts, the best course of action is SLAM. Just did a full Pool Math test. FC - 7.0 pH - 7.5 TA - 110 CH - 725 (I think this is simply due to the fact we have such hard water here in San Antonio, but it's been as low as...

San Antonio - Tiny stuff on the surface!

Enjoyed the spa last night. Thankful to live where we do!

San Antonio - Tiny stuff on the surface!

After a couple of days of extra skimming and running the pool a little more and at higher RPM, things are back to normal. I'm confident your explanation is exactly what happened. It's crazy to think all that stuff is flying around and we don't notice until we see it floating on our water. My...

San Antonio - Tiny stuff on the surface!

Went out to test the water and started skimming. I see these tiny specs on the surface. I’m in San Antonio so don’t know if this is some pollen in the air or what?!? Can anyone help?

What’s the best way to lower alkalinity without lowering pH?

I don’t think I’d add anything. If you did, Borax has the least impact on TA.

What’s the best way to lower alkalinity without lowering pH?

I'm also trying to lower my TA in order to get my pH more stable. However, I'm in my first year so my pH is expected to rise more than a more established pool. Recently I've been adding about 18 ounces/day to get/keep my pH down, but (oddly) my TA remains at 110 or so! I don't understand why. I...

    OCLT - Thanks TFP!

Thanks for validating my hypothesis and personal plan of attack!

    OCLT - Thanks TFP!

That’s my goal as well. Figured the muriatic acid is getting two birds with one stone.

    OCLT - Thanks TFP!

I'm also trying to dial down my pH a little bit. It's been bouncing in the 7.8 - 8.0 (sometimes higher) range and I'd like it to be maintained closer to 7.4. I'll test again now and add to get my FC to 8. Thanks!

    OCLT - Thanks TFP!

Here in San Antonio, chlorine seems to evaporate into thin air! I was having trouble maintaining my FC at a level needed relative to CYA (not a SWG pool). Decided to do an OCLT. 6.5 last evening and 6.0 this morning. I remember thinking the 6.5 was borderline and could have been closer to 6.0...

    Leslie’s test confirmation

That was an amazing price! I pay $22 here in San Antonio and it's one of the better deals. Home Depot and Lowe's only have 10% (I believe) and they store it outside. Our WalMart never has the good stuff in stock. I tried another local pool place and they charge $28 for a 4-pack of 12.5%! Makes...

    Leslie’s test confirmation

Good points! I was only curious and would not trust Leslie’s for readings. I do think Josh did a pretty good job. My TA is actually 130.

    Leslie’s test confirmation

After using different types of bleach, I’ve found that Leslie’s 12.5% works best for me and the price isn’t horrible especially considering the convenience of using 12.5% v 10% or less. I ran in to grab a case and decided to let them test my water. I figured it could also help me confirm if...

    CYA images

I meant to say earlier - it was done outdoors but I came in to get my phone and took the pic indoors.

    CYA images

Retested using your advice and it’s closer to 40 than 50, but I’ll call it 50.

    CYA images

60 and 70 looked a lot like 80. I went with 40 initially. The subjectivity of this test is challenging.

    CYA images

These were all taken from the same distance and then cropped. For such a subjective test, thought I’d post these images to see which CYA level the forum would assign.

New gunite pool - trying to get it right

I seriously wonder if I tested wrong when I got 220 alkalinity. Either that or I calculated how much muriatic acid to use incorrectly (I did use the pool math app). Currently aerating. I knew I was overshooting the chlorine a bit since I used a gallon of 12.5%. Had I used 10%, it would have been...

New gunite pool - trying to get it right

Is NPC a good start-up process? I'm guessing so since it's the National Plasters Council. After reading thorugh it, I've done a good job of following it for the most part.

New gunite pool - trying to get it right

My FC will likely come down in no time. I was given a card from the PB that's labeled NPC. Confession, I need to pay closer attention to that! But there's stuff on there that I'm not familiar with on here.

Thanks! Read through those last week and after reading more and more on this site, I think I need to go back through so more stuff will stick!

New gunite pool - trying to get it right

Sorry about that - it submitted before I was done and then when I went to edit, my phone locked up. Yesterday morning I tested FC and pH and was shocked by the results. My FC dropped to 0.0 and pH was up to 8.0! So I tested TA, CH, and CYA just to get all the numbers. TA was 220! CH was a...
