First year salt pool in NC, left open, pump running, water temp down to 33 - Yikes!

Plus if you are getting up to 32 during the day consider yourself lucky. I haven't seen above 25ish in 10 days. My pool has an inch thick sheet of ice across it. I winterize my pump, filter and plumbing, but I don't cover my pool, so all my neighbors think it is fully open. Unless you are...

    No more closing

You guys all say that leaving the pool open requires you to test the water over winter, but shouldn't you be testing your water anyway over winter to make sure the pH isn't out of whack or anything? I left my pool "open" this past winter. Sometime around early December, I actually winterized my...

    Cloudy Water Question

I bought my pressure gauge from tftestkits. It is indeed awesome quality and a fair price. However, it is a common brand (DuraChoice) gauge and might be able to find one at a plumbing supply store, or some place that sells plumbing besides the blue and orange box store. You just want to get one...

    Considering opening pool ourselves

We used to have a similar looking ladder on a pool in our house as a kid. It just slid in and out. Those metal sleeves cover the hole. I'd lift them up, and as said, if you see no screws or bolts, then just pull or push it in.

I know it's really early but when to open?

Hi John. I'm across the river over in Troy IL so I can give you my advice, even though I've only owned my pool 2 winters. So, it's March, and things have been very warm around here. But I still think we may see a freeze this month. My water temp is still in the low 50's, which is plenty cold to...

    Should I close?

I wouldn't close my pool if I lived in a slightly warmer climate than I currently do. Last night the air temp dropped into the 30's and when I woke up this morning it was 15 degrees. The pool still ice free, though I am sure it won't stay that way long. My point though is that if you don't see...

    Cover Tight or loose?

I'd say activity is slow around here this time of year, plus this is a tough question to answer. For my in ground pool, I kept the cover tight, so that if someone walked out on it they wouldn't sink too far. But it is a green canvas/mesh type cover that lets water through, so I have no problem...

Question regarding closing my pool for the winter

You live in TX, you don't need to close your pool. Just run the pump when freezing temps are expected. i grew up in San Antonio and no one I knew closed their pools for the winter. Most of the folks on this forum that are in the Dallas area don't close their pools. You are fine leaving it...

What is the point in closing your inground pool?

I'm kind of with C3Cl3N3O3. I don't want to worry about power outages and freezing temps from ice storms or something of that nature. I've been without power for several days due to an ice storm before. So at some point this year, I'm going to half close my pool. I will winterize my plumbing...

Seriously need to cover my pool but.....

If it were me, I'd put the cover on and peel it back every so often to check chlorine and peek on the water until it got cold enough to do a full close.

Should I remove wedding cake stairs?

I'm not using the frog. We moved into our house in September last year. We ran the pool with the frog system the remainder of that year using chemicals the previous owner left us. When opening up the pool this year, I saw what all the pool store wanted me to buy to get the frog system going and...

Should I remove wedding cake stairs?

I totally agree with you on that. My plan is to take them out and inspect for green stuff, and clean if necessary. Last year when I was "sanitizing" the pool with a Pool Frog system, my stairs had a little bit of green in them, but not much. This year with the TFP method, I'm anxious to see if I...

Should I remove wedding cake stairs?

Just curious, what is the reasoning? I'm having a hard time imagining how they could be damaged.

Should I remove wedding cake stairs?

I'm going to half close my pool this year. I'm going to blow out the plumbing and winterize the pump, but not cover the pool. My question is should I remove the wedding cake stairs that I have in my pool? The attach to the concrete deck, and my only concern is whether ice freezing around the...

    closing but not covering

Appreciate the feedback all. My hope is that it'll be about as maintenance free was it was when I covered it. Last winter to close it I threw in some granular shock, polyquat, drained about a foot of water, and then covered it. When I opened this year I started with the TFP method, and will...

    closing but not covering

I think this year I'm going to leave my pool uncovered during the winter instead of using the mesh safety cover we got with the pool and used last year. I have no idea what brand of cover it is, but I doubt very much it is a UV blocking one. My pool plumbing is simple and not very efficient due...

Question about covering the pool equipment

despite what all of the others have said, no I don't think it is recommended. You can do it if you want to, but make sure you have enough air movement under that tarp to prevent trapping water and creating rust problems. I don't cover my BBQ grill for the same reason. In my experience, it's held...

Filling pool in winter? First closing in STL MO

I'd look into getting the liner replaced asap. The longer you let it leak, the longer the sub structure below the liner erodes. Another thing, you'll likely have a harder time finding someone to install it for you in the spring/early summer. If you get it replaced now, most pool builders will...

Question about the finger hole in skimmer lid

I don't think it's really necessary to do anything. I was under the impression once you plug up the pipes it doesn't matter if water gets in the skimmer.

HAVE to have new liner; do it now, or in the Spring? Pool level is falling quickly.

Do it now. If you've got the money/resources available, you'll be better off doing it now while most other people are thinking about closing their pools. Getting a builder/installer to help you when swimming season starts up again in the spring is not always easy.

Does CYA always leave in winter?

CYA doesn't dilute. Ammonia and heat are the only two things I've read around here that will cause CYA to disappear. Heat does it slowly, and you don't want/shouldn't have ammonia in your pool. Otherwise you lose CYA from draining the pool or losing water. I would assume you lost water when it...

Does CYA always leave in winter?

I wish mine disappeared in the winter. Then I wouldn't have had to drain half of my pool at start up earlier this year.

    'Slippery Water' and TA Question

As someone who lives in an area with very hard water and has a water softener in the house to make the water more slippier, I can say with 100% confidence that it's the calcium. Enjoy! Some people kill for that kind of water! :) On a serious side though, some hardness isn't a terrible thing. So...

    'Slippery Water' and TA Question

It just sounds like soft water to me. My TA has been much higher than that for a while. Use your Taylor kit to do the calcium hardness test, and add calcium if you don't like it. I'm personally trying to add borates to my pool to make the water softer or "slippier" because we like it. But to do...

Not to hijack this thread, but my neighbor's pool is cloudy...it was green, and though he's not sold on TFP yet, it was memorial day weekend, I had bleach, and no pools stores were open. We SLAMed it, got it blue, but cloudy, and once Tuesday came around, he wanted to talk to a "professional". I...

new house, new to me pool

Hey everyone! Me again, I thought instead of starting a new thread I'd just continue this one. Here's my pool! It's looking great! I've maintained the FC at 7ppm ish, never below 5ppm so far. But my pH climbed up to 8 today, or maybe yesterday. I'm thinking my high TA of 200ppm is going to be...

A weird question for spring but here goes.

I am by no means an expert, but to me that sounds like your liner doesn't fit quite right, and is contracting in the cold and pulling out of the track. I'm not sure you can do anything about that besides get a new liner and make sure it fits right.
