Any way to pump water off cover back into pool?

A strong chlorine smell typically comes from CC (chlorine breaking down organic matter). Once you figure out the water transfer (I agree with jbizzle above about trying to pull cover off if you can), you will definitely want to use that TF-100 kit to get accurate readings. :)

Opps. Forgot to shock pool after opening. Bad?

Since you have some CC, shocking would certainly not hurt. You could also turn your SWCG off and preform an OCLT. This would help indicate if you have an algae in your pool. EDIT: Butterfly beat me, but at least we are on the same page! :goodjob:

New pool owner and need help

It won't really hurt..but then again, you would be replacing your water that was sent to waste with new water. So it might waste some of the chlorine that you are putting in. BUT it will also reduce the amount of crud that gets sent to your filter.

Yes, sometimes as algae is killed it might 'settle' a bit. Nothing to worry about, keep running the filter 24/7 Have you looked into getting your own test kit? This is important for effective (and efficient) shocking. When reading articles on this site, did you read the instructions about how...

    Replacing DE in filter

I understand that, but if you are back-washing your filter, then you are sending the CYA straight from the skimmer to the pump/filter (and losing it). You will keep more of the CYA in your pool if it was in front of a return. Or at the very least, I would take the CYA sock out of the skimmer...

    Replacing DE in filter

The primary reason you don't want to backwash right away is because you just spent time and money adding CYA to the pool, only to wash away most of it. I would recommend dissolving the CYA in a sock in front of a return jet (not the skimmer). This will send the CYA into your pool first, not...

New pool owner and need help

To add to what Jason said (about pH).. pH will rise faster with higher TA. Adding muriatic acid will bring down your pH and TA...which is a good thing. After you go thought the shocking process, these are the target levels you should aim for: FC 3-7 (depending on your CYA) pH 7.5-7.8 TA 70-90...

0 CYA - ok to use dichlor (shock) to increase CYA?

Couple thoughts... CYA could take as long as 1 week to show up on your test. You can use Pool Calculator to figure out how much CYA each tab 'should' add Your CC continues to rise..makes me wonder how your water looks? Do you plan to shock the pool?

New to Pool, DIY'r Opening Question(s)

Sounds good! Just keep up the hard work and you will have a trouble free pool very soon! The more debris you can remove from the pool, the better. Also, brushing the pool helps the shocking process (and can clean up your waterline). Keep the pictures coming!

Looking much better already! How are you levels doing? You should be testing pretty frequently, making sure to keep your FC at the appropriate shock level.

New to Pool, DIY'r Opening Question(s)

Are you measuring the amount of chemicals you are adding? It would be wise to use the Pool Calculator to determine how much (of each) you should be adding. You do NOT just 'toss in' a bunch of CYA..because if it gets too high, that is something that cannot be easily fixed (requires partial drain).

    whats the pantyhose trick?

The smell is due to the fact that you are cleaning a 'swamp.' Can you give us a little more info about your filter? Brand and model? Does your filter consist of two pieces (top part is clamped on and can be removed)? Pictures welcome :-D

 Welcome to TFP! It sounds like you are on the right track and will have your very own trouble free pool soon! What test kit are you getting? The TF-100 from http://www.tftestkits.net come highly recommended on this forum!

    whats the pantyhose trick?

I am pretty sure people put them on the skimmer basket. They work just like a skimmer sock, but are cheaper  EDIT: Jason beat me to it! Normally your pressure should change (at least a little) after backwashing. If it is not moving at all..is it stuck at 0? Or at a different number...
