Pentair QUAD 100 DE - Air Bleeder Screen Cap replacement due to tear?

DE and Perlite are both filtration media. Perlite is basically non-toxic while some forms of DE (like the kind used in pools) are inhalation hazards (crystallized silica is considered a carcinogen). But with perlite, you only need to use about half as much in a filter. On the other hand...

Pentair QUAD 100 DE - Air Bleeder Screen Cap replacement due to tear?

I’ve used CelaPool DE powder without issue for many years. It’s pool DE that has been treated so it retains a little moisture. It’s easy to scoop and it creates very little dust. Must better than standard DE which creates plumes of hazardous dust every time you scoop it. I used to wear a...

Pentair QUAD 100 DE - Air Bleeder Screen Cap replacement due to tear?

I think the celaperl might be causing the cartridges to plug up and then the air screen is being force to handle too much flow. Cleaning more frequently might solve the problem but switching to regular DE could also help. My screen has never looked that plugged up

Pentair QUAD 100 DE - Air Bleeder Screen Cap replacement due to tear?

Agree with all the experts points. Starting at 2psi and waiting until 10psi is a 5X increase in system pressure or a 500% increase. TFP recommends cleaning at 25% … Also, Quads do come with a push/pull backwash valve. I have one. Some people opt not to install it. I find it to be useful...

BioGuard BioLab UV sanitizer bulb replacement.

That one is fine. Just know that the CYA often settles at the bottom of the jug and so you need to really shake it up good to make sure you get a good pour. Otherwise you’ll pour off all the liquid and there will be a thick sludge of CYA left on the bottom. I would suggest adding only 10ppm...

BioGuard BioLab UV sanitizer bulb replacement.

In your case, buying some liquid CYA (3X more expensive than the granular stuff) might just be easier. Then you can add it slowly to try to creep up on the 30ppm target. By the way, if that 5ppm number is from a pool store, please don’t use it. Pool store testing is notoriously bad.

BioGuard BioLab UV sanitizer bulb replacement.

You should keep your CYA at 30ppm for bather comfort. Chlorinated water with no CYA is incredibly harsh and will cause the formation of much nastier CCs due to the reaction rates involved. CYA is a chlorine buffer as well as a stabilizer against UV loss.

I’d like to know what your auto cover rails are made of? Aluminum and salt water (even mildly salty water found in pools) isn’t a great combo. Cheap stainless steel rails and fasteners will corrode.

BioGuard BioLab UV sanitizer bulb replacement.

It’s just going to cost what it costs. This is a 13 year old system from a company that no longer sells the unit made by a manufacturer that no longer exists. The fact that you can even find a replacement bulb is a minor miracle and if you’re insistent on keeping the old unit in place, you...

BioGuard BioLab UV sanitizer bulb replacement.

Have you pulled the quartz sleeve out of the unit to inspect? The quartz sleeves need cleaning and replacement regularly as well because the UV light eventually creates high absorption color centers in the glass which degrades the performance of the system. The glass also gets deposits on it...

Old pump blew out - repair or replace question

Get the IntelliFlo. You would have to pry my VSP (and SWG) from my cold, dead hands. VSP’s use about as much electricity as a lightbulb when running at their lowest speeds which you can do 24/7 of you want. That means your skimmer will always be cleaning and your water will always be...

    Rusted out pump casing

Get everything bonded and up to code. Bonding is important to prevent electrical shocks. Get the chemicals away from the equipment. Acid vapors are heavier than air and depending on the breeze direction can easily travel. Make sure acids are never stored with chlorine sources. Clear...

    Rusted out pump casing

I’d like to see a wider shot of the equipment pad … are you using pucks to chlorinate your pool? Are you storing chemicals anywhere near the equipment?

Could pump 1m above water cause water in basket?

The pump, on low speed, doesn’t allow for much total head. By having the pump and equipment 1m above the water surface, you’re adding that much to the total head (suction side head loss + return side head loss). If your suction plumbing is small diameter or long runs with elbows and/or your...

Random pipe with rag stuffed in it

Do you know the history of the pool? Perhaps there was a sand filter used previously in which that may have been a dedicated waste/backwash line connected to your sewer. Do you have a sewer clean out line nearby? Of maybe the line was run out to daylight somewhere else in the yard or property.

    Mysterious 2 inch pipe

Perhaps that pipe was added to the sewer line for a different reason. Maybe it’s acting like an air vent for the sewer line which would explain the small screw in the top of the cap - the screw would allow for air to slowly enter the pipe but exclude any water due to rain. Does the house...

    Mysterious 2 inch pipe

Was the previous filter a sand filter or a DE filter? If so, then it’s probably an old backwash/waste line. You can cut the pipe down below grade and cap it.

Does your pool have a single main drain? If so, don’t cut that pipe as it could a suction limiting vent pipe. https://www.poolspanews.com/how-to/codes/on-site-solution_o When you cut the cap off the pipe, was there a small slit in the PVC or some kind of vent hole??

Right pvc for above ground plumbing/filter?

But the purple drips are what signify a job well done … purple primer was formulated that way so that building inspectors could verify that plumbers actually assembled the plumbing correctly - no purple drips, no pass inspection.

I prefer the split-ring spacer with top and bottom o-ring design. You can also get the split rings too if you happen to lose one. Make sure to use 100% silicone lubricant on all the o-rings, not Teflon based lubricants. I always replace he shaft and lid o-rings whenever I service a valve...

Upgrading SS Pump to VS Pump Questions

Hubbel makes many different kinds of water tight receptacles and plugs that twist and seal. They come in all different configurations. You could easily install a 240V receptacle and then have a watertight plug on the motor power cable. It would be 240V, safe and removable. Does code allow...

And the way the current pump plugs into that outlet is a violation of code. The outlet and plug are fine but the outlet box should be a covered environmental style that seals around the wire when closed. In the current setup, the plug and outlet can get wet when it rains.

Upgrading SS Pump to VS Pump Questions

No comment on pumps, others have said enough … but … Goodness gracious, definitely redo that plumbing. There’s no need for the giant loop on the intake side, just use a check valve and maybe a shutoff valve (Jandy) to stop the water flow when cleaning the strainer basket. I believe the spec is...
