    Disappearing Shock

I just made a discovery. The bottle of shock I just reached for is 627 days old. Maybe this has something to do with my problem.

    Disappearing Shock

Thank you, RDspaguy. I just checked it and it is about 1.25. I will shock it and leave it alone to drop naturally. I have never added more bromide than at each new fill in 6 years so that spooks me a bit. I will add more bromide in a week if this does not work. I usually go 6 months or...

    Disappearing Shock

Good Morning, All and I hope everyone is doing very well. I have an interesting issue that I have never experienced before in my hot tub. Usually, after each tubbing, I add 1 ounce to 1.5 ounces of 12% liquid shock and all is fine at the next days readings. This is a bromine tub, no floatie...

Will not open pool this year...advice please

Good Day, All. My neighbor broke her arm in May and decided not to open her pool this year. We still have the cover on, have put mosquito dunks in the water on the cover and in the buckets holding the cover down. There are tadpoles growing in a couple of the buckets which I am gently...

    Help users find Liquid Chlorine

Old stock of Pool Shock 12.5%, dated June 7th, 2019, 2.99 gallon, Job Lot, Coventry, RI as of 5 days ago. Call first.

    Liquid chlorine prices up?

12.5% is a hard commodity around RI. Job Lot has (gasp) old stock pool shock dated June 7th, 2019 at same old prices, all you can find. I will do a test tomorrow to see how degraded it actually is. What bleach there is in the stores is that Chloromax, lemon scented or splashless...

No more bromine tablets and here's the results

Update on not putting 1 oz of 12.5 bleach in every night. The water got a tiny bit cloudy. I added a couple of Tablespoons of bleach and that cleared it right up. The next night I checked the PH and it was 4.3. I have never had pH that low in my life. What happened? I added pH up and got...

No more bromine tablets and here's the results

Hi Tim, I was not clear, I am so sorry. I have always used bromine in my tub. I got to the point previously, where no matter what I did, it was always cloudy. I got tired of that and was advised that the floating bromine tabs were not helping my issue. I ditched the floaty. I read your...

No more bromine tablets and here's the results

Hi Tim, I am using the Bromine test kit and I do start out with the Sodium Bromide. I did not think CYA was an issue with a bromine spa. I will go read your suggestions. Thank you.

No more bromine tablets and here's the results

Good Morning, All. I wanted to report back with the status of my hot tub. I stopped using the bromine tablets altogether. Now, I finally got around to draining/refilling the tub yesterday. I dutifully used the Ahhsome protocol. I have to say there was no green foam, there was not a speck of...

    New pump and a question

Thank you all. I ended up using a couple of hand towels. I tried the potato idea but by the time I could craft it into something fully functional, the towels were quicker and worked great. I learned quickly to NOT install the hose clamps in place before tightening the hose ends on. Two pretty...

    New pump and a question

Ha! Thank you! And a hearty thank you to all of you who contribute expert advice. I have also never had such a clean and happy hot tub / pool and neighbor's pool by following the advice here on TFP! You folks are the best!

    New pump and a question

Good Evening everyone. I am replacing an above ground pool pump on a 24'x 48" pool tomorrow for a neighbor and she does not have any type of pool plugs. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop the water from escaping the pool from the skimmer port and the return port? Thanks in advance.

Chlorine Tablets contain copper!!! Now what?

This was a bucket purchased from a Pool Store. The the additives are to prevent algae and to ensure clear water. I will take a pic of the bucket and post. I realize the importance of the liquid chlorine. I use it in my pool and spa, but for this pool, it is not a reality. Tabs have to be...

Chlorine Tablets contain copper!!! Now what?

Thank you all, for your responses. I will see about returning the bucket. I would not know what the copper will do and we are not going to test the water for it nor purchase sequesterant. Tough lesson for the pool owner, $75 going down the rat hole if they do not take it back.

Chlorine Tablets contain copper!!! Now what?

I am in a situation that, for various safety and other reasons, an OCLT test cannot be performed. The pool in question is gin-clear, and the CC was clear in one drop using the TF-100 kit. We have SLAMmed it in strict accordance with instructions and have also purchased a Dolphin S50. Thanks...

    Needing some POP

This question is for Richard320. Can you please explain what you said above about people ending the slam a day or two early and then a month later the pool is green again? I can understand if you are not keeping your FC up and your numbers in line, but can you please elaborate for us newbies...

    Getting tired of the cloudy

Thank you, Matt and dlleno for the detailed explanations, I appreciate it. I just crawled out of bed to remove the floaty. I use the tub daily and have not been off the farm for years so no worries there! So basically I am going to a 2 step system. I will keep daily detailed records on this...

    Getting tired of the cloudy

Thank you, Matt and Danny, Yes, my bromine levels are always between 4-6 when I check the next night. After tubbing for about an hour, I add in an ounce or two of bleach and I have a floaty with the bromine tablets. The next night, before tubbing, the bromine is about a 6. I have tried...

    Getting tired of the cloudy

Thank you, Matt! I follow TFP rules and add the bromine at start up and activate it with the bleach. I add 1-2 ounces of 6.25% bleach nightly. I will do a complete clean and refill this weekend. Can you advise me on proper cleaning techniques for the filters please? I would really like to...

    Question about refill procedure

Yes, every time! What I do is raise the Bromine level to about 15 or so then add the Ahh-Some and follow the Ahh-Some directions. Use a wet/dry shop vac to remove the gross looking foam, do not let it dry on the sides, then drain.

    Getting tired of the cloudy

Hi Zea, Thank you for your reply. I have used Ahh-Some for years and love it. I buy 2 new filters every year and rotate them out. I don't know what you mean by a 20% pressure increase....increase where? I have no meters. Yes, this is for a hot tub. I see I was remiss in even stating that...

    Getting tired of the cloudy

Good Day, All. I am trying very hard to bring my water back to the "new water sparkle". Which, by the way, I have never, ever had since the very first day of filling it each time. I have been following TPF rules for the past 5 years and have all of you to thank for keeping me on the right...

Bought a house with a spa - how do I know when to change the water and high Br

Thank you, Mr. Moderator, I read the link to Pool School and went to the Pool Math Calculator. I figured out to use all zeros for the CYA and Salt, as I do not test for CYA and do not use salt. I think I can use the calculator properly with my results. It seems the key is having your CH in...

Bought a house with a spa - how do I know when to change the water and high Br

Hi Cindy, Since I dont do Walmart or Lowes, I get my Defender and Metal Gon from reputable spa stores on Ebay. Ahh-Some from Amazon as well as the Taylor Products. You have to watch Amazon, sometimes Taylor has them cheaper than Amazon. Metal Gon is imperative here in New England where your...

Why is my water slick feeling? Comedy of errors?

Yes, there are several places that carry no-name bleach. I just remember the hard core directives from this forum about being careful to always use Clorox. But since Clorox has abandoned us, I guess we have no choice. I have a Job-Lot that sometimes carries 12% as well. Thank you very much!

Why is my water slick feeling? Comedy of errors?

Thank you, Sir! We do not have a Walmart handy...anyone have any thoughts on bleach from stores like Family Dollar, Dollar Store, Stop and Shop, Best Value Brands? All of your input is greatly appreciated!

How long to run pump/filters a day? Ph and TA problems.

Hi Dooger, I will not fool with my TA. I will adjust ph and the TA fixes itself. I found that the Bromine likes it between 4 and 6, the ph will stay at 7.4 to 7.6 and the TA will be right on the mark. When my CH is around 150, life is good and the tub is happy.

Bought a house with a spa - how do I know when to change the water and high Br

Welcome, Cindy! The experts on this forum will help you maintain your spa perfectly. As long as you follow their directions and ask as many questions as you want. I have learned to stay away from pool and spa stores. Did you hear me? Do not go near them. They do not carry the items...
