    A see-through filter container

Has anyone ever heard of a company that builds a transparent DE filter such that you can always observe what is happening inside as the water flows around the grids? I get frustrated as the season goes on, always having to guess how much DE is in there, guess how much is coming out in a...

Best Places to Buy Liquid Chlorine

Great data, thanks. That's actually not a terrible scenario for me. I have a short season up here, and by the end my LC will have degraded not too far below the strength of bleach off the shelf. My last couple of weeks are usually a nuclear holocaust of gallons dumped in to fight mustard algae...

Best Places to Buy Liquid Chlorine

Before I start making phone calls, does anyone local to SE PA have a source for a bulk supplier who will sell a 55G drum of bleach to a residential pool owner? Not looking for general suggestions to call janitorial supply houses or to check prices at a big box store here, just hoping somebody...

Cloudy water, but none of the usual suspects?

The next day FC had dropped by 2.5 to 6ppm. So something is at work there. I haven’t added chlorine since. The cloudiness is decreasing slightly but not completely, even though the filter has reached the point where it will now go for weeks without an increase of pressure; I have never had...

Cloudy water, but none of the usual suspects?

This is new behavior in my pool for the first time in the 11 seasons I've opened it. I thought I had a good handle on the interactions between various infestations of green and mustard algae and liquid chlorine and CYA. And organics that may have dropped in. But the pool is free of visible...

Cloudy water, but none of the usual suspects?

I lost 0.5ppm of Chlorine in the last 24 hours, and it was very sunny here. CC is 0. This cloudiness is just not consistent with algae problems I've had before. On the other hand, I just noticed something very unusual. There are a few water-skimming bugs of some kind skating on top of the pool...

Cloudy water, but none of the usual suspects?

Water has stayed cloudy enough through this years opening such that the bottom drain is a barely visible blob. It's clearer in the shallows. Water color is good, the translucency is like when you do a CYA test, the deeper the water column the more opaque it gets. I cannot identify anything...

Better treatment for mustard algae than chlorine?

This is just an idle request for comment if anyone has read or heard about some clever chemist who is trying to develop a new treatment for mustard algae that works better than chlorine, given that this type of algae is relatively resistant to Cl. If you get an infestation, the SLAM can take...

Why is my pump pressure rising when filter is engaged...but there's nothing inside the DE filter?

No heater or anything else inline. @cowboycasey ok, I see your point about the return being more convoluted than the waste hose....although the waste hose is a lot longer, 50', but it's a straight shot. I just don't understand how the pressure in filter mode is the same whether or not I have...

Why is my pump pressure rising when filter is engaged...but there's nothing inside the DE filter?

I have new info: filter loaded with new DE and set to filter: 16psi starting. Filter loaded with new DE and set to rinse: 10psi. Am I correct in understanding that the only difference between filter and rinse is that from the MPV, Filter sends the water out the return while Rinse sends the same...

Pressure keeps rising on my DE Filter

Late reply but wanted to reassure you that this is normal with DE. When my pool starts from green, I have to backwash literally every half hour for at least a week, once even two weeks. The funny thing about DE and how algae looks in the water is that the water looks consistently green and gross...

Why is my pump pressure rising when filter is engaged...but there's nothing inside the DE filter?

I'm baffled. My Hayward Superpump and MPV, when set to filter as brand new without adding DE showed a pressure of 10psi. So that's baseline with a water path impeded only by empty grid fabric. Adding DE brought the psi up to maybe 11 or 12. So that's a more useful baseline. Later, I was...

Tested DE filter without any grids inside....same high-pressure problem

It is a new fluid-filled gauge. It rests at zero and seems to move well. I thought it might be failing, but there is a match between when the gauge enters the red zone at 20psi, and when the suction at the skimmer has stopped. It seems to be reflecting reality like my old Hayward gauge. Do MPVs...

Tested DE filter without any grids inside....same high-pressure problem

I do have algae, which I manage every year with liquid chlorine according to the recommendations and methods of this site. FC has ranged from 20 to 8. I haven't tested any other water paramemeters while working on the algae. What is different is that my filter shows high pressure even without...

Tested DE filter without any grids inside....same high-pressure problem

Her are some pics. First the pool water is mostly opaque, milky with a touch of green, after I superchlorinated it. Previously it was pea soup. Here are my skimmer and bottom drain lines, with the orange valves, joining and entering the Hayward superpump, then to my MPV and Hayward DE filter...

Tested DE filter without any grids inside....same high-pressure problem

A new twist for me in year 10 of my pool adventure. My Hayward 24sqft DE filter started up this summer at 10psi base pressure, and gradually crept up to 15psi starting pressure as I've been filtering my pea-soup pool water this past few weeks. Not terribly unusual for my backwash habits...

    Cost for PVC work

Replacing most of the pipe in the picture. Note that the saw is not related to this project :) Doesn't SEEM complex, compared to pools with multiple skimmers and drains. I don't know. Sticker shock I guess.

    Cost for PVC work

I've just been quoted $450 to replace the cracked PVC pipes and two ball valves that I have for my single-skimmer, single-drain inground pool. Leaving aside the suggestions that I do it myself, and leaving aside the absolute guesses, does anyone have experience enough to tell me that that is...

Wary of cost to re-plaster. Permakote?

This is valuable perspective. The quote offers $9170 for the surface-chip treatment, white plaster. I’m looking forward to the next quote. Btw, as you seem to have more experience than I, when a contractor asks you, “have you gotten any quotes yet,” how does that affect their calculations? What...

Wary of cost to re-plaster. Permakote?

Interesting, thanks. I suppose that's what they mean by "Chip hollow plaster up to 20%, if necessary" before acid washing and applying Permakote and plaster. Most generic contractor estimates that I find indicate a price range of $3 to $7 per square foot of plaster. This quote is at the top even...

Wary of cost to re-plaster. Permakote?

All, it's time to re-plaster my gunnite pool for the first time with me as owner, and honestly it looks like it's been 30 years since the last one. I got a quote where the 1155 sqft job seems to cost just under $7/sqft, which seems high to me, according to some national estimating websites, but...
