    Groundwater coming into pool/floating liner.

Could there be a hydro-static valve in the main drain that is opening when the water table is high? I know they are more common in gunite pools, but I wonder if that is a possibility if a tear can not be found in the liner.

    Anyone opening early?

Opened in the Boston area late Wednesday to get a head start on cleaning it up while I have some extra free time. Water is 40 degrees and I don't have a pool heater so definitely won't be swimming anytime soon. Water is crystal clear and still had some residual chlorine left over from the late...

    Pool & Spa Lights

What Jimrahbe said. If you have automation going in it is pretty standard to have them all connected to run as one. It is not impossible to control them separately, but you will need to have a conversation with your builder about the changes mentioned above.

Maintaining Pool since summer (new Pool) and suddenly FC is really high.

Don't be surprised if you end up having to set the SWG much lower than 20% with a water temp of 63. As others have suggested cold water + shorter days can significantly reduce chlorine demand.

    Closing Water Temperature

You could do what I do if you don't mind a little extra work. I put my cover on in early to mid September due to a large amount of trees near the pool, but don't actually close/winterize the pool at that time. I bring the pool up to shock level before putting the cover on and recheck the...

Question about attaching a vac hose to a wall return

That is probably the best option. There is an old vacuum hose attached to it with a host clamp, but there are no vacuum fittings attached. The only downside is the filter is on the opposite end of the pool from the spa and would be upwards of a 60' run vs maybe a 25' run from the return in the...

Question about attaching a vac hose to a wall return

I want to do something a little unorthodox and figured this would be a good place to ask. I'm getting ready to drop the water level of my pool so I can winterize the lines. I also have a spa (that is completely separate from the pool) that I would like to empty and refill before the winter. That...

    What's your current pool temp?

Pool is 79 and the spa is 104.

Cursed Pool Light Change and a Problem

Short version of problem Tab that light fixture screws into in niche broke off. Fixture kind of stays in the niche, but it is loose and floats out if someone bumps into it. Any easy fixes that don't require the water level being dropped below the light? Complete story The underwater light below...

New East Texas Pool Build- Part 2 ?????

I doubt he will see the message. This is a quote from the admins on the locked part 2 thread. My opinion doesn't really matter in the long run, but the part 2 thread seemed quite civil. A bit of an overreaction on the part of this site, but they are the ones running the show. Just a shame that...

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

Things are looking really good now. Have only lost a total of 1.5ppm on my free chlorine in the past 72 hours. I am still closer to shock level than a normal FC level, but that will come down over time. FC = 16.5 CC = 0.5 PH = 7.2 (plan to raise this slightly) TA = 110 CYA = 65

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

Moving in the right direction, albeit slowly. Just completed another OCLT. Started with a FC of 21 and ended with a FC of 18 so lost 3ppm overnight. These have been performed on consecutive nights OCLT #1 = loss of 8.5ppm OCLT #2 = loss of 4.0ppm OCLT #3 = loss of 3.0ppm

It is on the to-do list. Don't have any vitamin C tablets handy at the moment.

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

The cell phone isn't catching it very good. It is the same thing that is on the stairs. It isn't green, isn't slimy, and doesn't brush or rub off.

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

CC is zero. I forgot to check the skimmer yesterday and found 2 decomposing rodents in there a few minutes ago. I suppose that could qualify as "organic material". I am told the staining on the liner and stairs has been present all season. The ladder was not put in until several weeks ago and...

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

Lost more at night this time than I did during the day yesterday. Still much less than the previous night though. FC was down to 14.0 and started at 19.5 last night.

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

It was a little hazy the other day, but it looked pretty clear today. The test that came back with a FC level of 19.5 was taken just before dusk with a heavy overcast so I will use that as the starting point for another OCLT. There has been some yellowish/orange color staining on the liner in...

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

Progress finally! Brought it back up to shock level this morning (around 21) and tested it when I got home around dusk tonight. FC is sitting at 19.5 and CC is now at 0.

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

Overnight loss test result time. Dusk FC = 21 CC = 0.5 Dawn FC = 12.5 CC = 0.5 CYA = 65 (tested yesterday evening after 6" of water added to pool) On a side note can an extremely high water temperature accelerate chlorine loss? The water temp is sitting at 86 degrees this morning from a...

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

Filter is back up and running after being out of commission for a little over 24hrs. I was out of town this morning so I didn't get any readings, but went ahead and instructed my mother to backwash and dump 8 bottles of bleach in once the electrician got the pool up and running. Much to her...

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

It is on the high side at 80, but that would be a pretty significant drain/fill right at the peak of pool season. My mother was a heavy user of trichlor pucks through a chlorinator so that is obviously why the CYA is up their in the 1st place. Needless to say I informed her she is not allow to...

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

Ugh, went out to backwash the pool and ran into a new problem. Turned the pump off, set to backwash, and nothing happened when I turned it back on. After some troubleshooting it looks like the GFI next to the circuit panel in the basement has failed. 94 degrees with a FC reading of 0. Do not...

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

Oh, I know where the level is supposed to be. At 80 it is already higher than I really want it. Figured I would just share this insight from a pool store guy that is sitting in my back yard while I work..

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

Added 10 more bottles last night around 10pm. As of 11am FC is back to 0 and CC is 1.0. Now I have a family friend over chirping that a CYA of 80 is low and should be between 100-120 and that is why it is "burning off so fast in the sun". He used to work at a pool store...

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

Just a quick update. Added 10 bottle of bleach last night which brought it up a little over shock level. FC dropped back down to 1.0 by 1pm today, but CC also dropped down to 1.0. 10 more bottles in tonight and we should be in pretty good shape in the morning. I had to cheat a little bu not keep...

Recovering a Pool that Got Out of Balance

I have lurked this site for a while and finally got fed up hearing about the conflicting advice my mother was getting from pool stores. Order the TF-100 and drove over to get some readings. 30,000 gallon vinyl pool. Initial Readings FC = 0 CC = didn't test PH = 6.6 TA = 40 CYA = 80 The pool...
