Can I close pool for winter with no CYA ?

I was in a similar situation one week ago. FC was 18 and CYA tested 0 (the water was heated so certainly not a problem with cold water). I discussed it in this thread https://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/high-fc-high-ph-probably-false-cya-0-and-closing-tomorrow.243949/ Some of the granulated...

High FC, high pH (probably false), CYA 0 and closing tomorrow

@Texas Splash I did it! Pool guy is here and my CYA reads 40 (y) The only problem is I wasn't actually finished until 6 am, so the pump only ran for 3 hours after the last addition. Hope it won't cause any damage.

High FC, high pH (probably false), CYA 0 and closing tomorrow

It took me about two hours and a lot of sock squeezing to dissolve about 2 pounds of stabilizer. Now I have 3 buckets ready and each will get 2 pound sock, so 8 pounds total which (according to pool math) equals 45 ppm of CYA (maybe more because the water level is low already so less volume). I...

High FC, high pH (probably false), CYA 0 and closing tomorrow

So should we go ahead and close tomorrow? Not sure if our pool guy can come any other time soon. He is very busy, and we just don't feel comfortable with the technical part of the closing procedure so we want him to do it. Is there even a chance the FC will go down if I give it a time? We're...

High FC, high pH (probably false), CYA 0 and closing tomorrow

Thanks. Will it have time to go back to the pool water by tomorrow morning when the pool guy comes to close and the pump will be shut down?

Pour it in front of a return jet, right? Not into skimmer?

High FC, high pH (probably false), CYA 0 and closing tomorrow

The pool was heated. My husband turned the heater off yesterday but water is still warm. I know I don't have time for 'sock in skimmer' method as it always takes several days to dissolve. Can I mix the cya acid inside? I plan to put 1 pound at a time in sock into a bucket with warm water , then...

High FC, high pH (probably false), CYA 0 and closing tomorrow

Thanks @Texas Splash. I just tested again and FC still holds on 18. So should I go for 5 or 6 pounds of dry stabilizer, as the pool math suggests? How it even happens that the FC holds so high and does not disappear when CYA is on 0?

forgot to pull out the pool lights... suggestions?

@Leebo - if you are praying for 60s all winter - aren't you also inviting algae to have a winter party in your pool? @PrairieGirl - our pool guy handled closing for us the past 2 winters and he never worried/did anything about the pool lights. Sounds like our pool lights are similar to yours...

High FC, high pH (probably false), CYA 0 and closing tomorrow

Pool guy is scheduled to come tomorrow to do the technical part of closing, and I am balancing the water. Last night I tested FC 18 and pH was over roof (purpler than 8.2). I was planning to add some muriatic acid today to lower the pH, then I realized it's probably a false reading due to high...

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

Won't the low pH damage our liner and equipment if I leave it alone with hopes it will rise naturally?? It has been low for more than 2 weeks now. First I thought it was CYA addition that brough pH down. Then I thought whatever was messing up the pool and caused cloudy water was also lowering...

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

So I finished SLAM two days ago (passed all 3 criteria on Wednesday morning), water is crystal clear, today's numbers: FC=3 CC=0.5 TA=80 CH=75 CYA=30 pH=6.8/7.0 salt=3320 I haven't added any chemicals since last bleach addition (Tuesday). I am still planning to raise/add CYA and probably adjust...

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

FC was 3.5 last night, so I added more bleach to bring it back to 12. Today morning, FC=7.5. I again added bleach to bring it back to 12 and, since water is crystal clear now, I planned to perform OCLT tomorrow morning. However, I just found out my husband added 40 lb of salt and turned SWG...

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

So last night, after my Pentair Warrior finished its 2-hour after-dusk round, I added bleach to raise FC to 12, then tested 40 minutes later. FC was back to 1 as before, so I was thinking ammonia and did some reading. I added another bleach to raise FC to 12. This morning I tested: FC=2 CC=0.5...

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

Yep I just finished the CYA treatment that raised CYA to my current 25, so maybe that's why the aeration/TA doesn't seem to work at this point. So can I go ahead with SLAM even with pH=6.8 or should I add Borax to raise it first? (But I am worried about raising TA with it, too).

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

I just tested again. It's more like 6.8 now. What can cause low pH when TA is in 80-90 range? And, do I still go ahead with SLAM with pH=6.8?

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

Thanks. I don't need to worry about pH right now, or do I? If there is algae in water, it is possible that's the reason for low pH, and after I get rid of whatever causes the cloudy water the TA takes care of the low pH?

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

I posted a few days ago about low pH. Since I was worried about raising my TA too much, I only aerated (return jets up, running slide waterfall 1-2 hours/day). Since my CYA was on/close to 0 last time I tested, I worked on adding some. My test from yesterday: FC=1.0 CC=0.5 TA=80 CYA=25...

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

As for the aeration - I already tried to aerate with slide waterfall running 1-2 hours per day. We turn on the slide after dusk, and off before we go to bed. The pool is covered with autocover and we want to keep it covered during day because of birds (common grackles nesting in neighborhood and...

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

Thanks for the answer. CYA was on or close to zero last time I checked. The dot on the bottom of the tube never disappeared. I currently have socks with CYA in skimmers. I will test tomorrow.

Borax vs Soda to raise pH

Hello all, my pH is low (bright orange = matching 6.8 box of Taylor test from my TF100 kit), my TA=90. So obviously I need to raise pH without raising TA too much. From what I read, it sounds like in such circumstances it is better to use Borax than washing soda, as the latter tends to raise TA...

Making life simpler - a superfast way to always get exact 25 & 44 ml water samples?

Syringes. Instead of pouring the extra water out of the tube, take it out by a syringe. OR, you can add the water to the tubes by a syringe, till you get the desired amount.

Anyone feel like solving a pool mystery?

Another weird thing with this house is its price history. So this house was sold on 6/24/2020 for 105K and six weeks later, on August 6, they listed it again for 295K? Scrolling down, there was pending sale for $105K in 2017, then the house was back on market without being sold (it sold one...

Why my pool doesn't hold chlorine?

I updated my signature. All the time, it thought it was there. Sorry. I will probably update more later. I am really in 'the dummies' category when it comes to the pool equipment so I need to consult with my husband. What I put in my signature was what our contract said when we built one year...

Why my pool doesn't hold chlorine?

Yes I believe all three passed, I forgot to mention, I also tested CC this morning and it was 0 (no pink after reagent addition). So my FC target is 4ppm right? How long would it take for the chlorine to go down? (just to know when it makes sense to test again, as I don't want to waste my...

Why my pool doesn't hold chlorine?

So it looks like I am done. Yesterday, I tested and adjusted FC three times (added 2.5 gallon of 12.5% bleach total yesterday) 9:30am 12ppm - added 88 oz 6pm 10.5ppm - added 121 oz 11:45pm 12.5 - added 99 oz This morning @6:45am, FC was 16.5 Two questions: When can I turn the SWGC back on...
