Where do chloramines go during superchlorination?

I am trying to understand what happens when you shock the pool with chlorine, e.g. during the slam process. Where do the chloramines go? My understanding is that adding chlorine converts the NH3 to mono, di, and then trichloramine. What then? Does the trichloramine simply evaporate away?

Aks35 faulty. Is my cell dead? Are cells interchangeable?

I have an AkS 35 chlorinator and cell. About 5 years old. https://poolandspawarehouse.com.au/poolrite-aks-350-salt-chlorinator-retrofits-all-aks-enduro-surechlor.html Recently it started showing lower Chlorine output, and pool chlorine levels have been dropping. It won’t go above 3 bars out of...

    Polishing Pebblecrete?

We recently had our pool redone with Pebble Sheen. It's rougher than we'd like. I'd like to polish/grind it to smooth it out a bit. I did a small section in the spa (which I can drain) using a diamond polishing pad on an angle grinder, and it worked quite well. It results in a terrazzo like...

Why clean cartridge filter at +25%?

TFP recommends cleaning your cartridge filter when pressure rises 25%. What is the logic of this? I've tried this and the filter isn't very dirty. The filter cake hasn't built up properly yet. I clean ours at around +100% (e.g. when risen from ~60kPa to ~120kPa (9 psi to 18 psi).

    Low alkalinity bad for plaster?

Traditional recommended levels for Total Alkalinity are ~80-120. Trouble Free Pool has a lower recommended range. E.g. for our pool it recommends 60-80 with recommended minimum of 50. I would rather run at the lower end (50-60) as it keep pH much more stable, however I am concerned of it...

Magsalt (Magnesium Chloride) turned pool green

Our pool was replastered a month ago. I added salt yesterday, plus two bags of MagSalt (magnesium chloride): https://www.bunnings.com.au/hy-clor-12-5kg-mag-salt-pool-chemical_p3090353 The pool is now green! Looking at the reviews above, it seems a common issue. Our pool looks like that...

How to add pressure gauge to PVC pipe?

I’d like to add a pressure gauge to my solar bypass line to help tune it properly. What’s the easiest way to add one to PVC pipe? Do I need to add a T piece? Or can you drill a hole and add something directly?

Does DE really ruin cartridge filters?

Many people here have asked if they can add some DE to their cartridge to boost the performance. (I am wondering the same thing). Some people and some manufacturers say to add it. Eg. https://pooltek.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Filter-PentairClean_ClearPlus.pdf But a common reply on TFP is...

Solar tubing - Balanced or Unbalanced headers?

I’m about to replace my rooftop solar tubing with new material. A lot of suppliers show the balanced Z-manifold design, where the return header does a U-turn. Other vendors use the unbalanced approach, with a U-manifold design, which is simpler. My instinct is that an unbalanced approach would...

Haze and “tea leaves” from solar tubing - how to clear?

We replastered, filled and started up our pool 10 days ago. The 15+ year old solar system is now shedding black rubber specks into the pool. The tubing is old and is becoming gooey/slimey. The water has also gone hazy, which I think is from the tubing too. You can easily see the bottom of the...

Sealant or grout between coping and waterline tiles?

I am currently doing my waterline tiles. The coping is limestone glued to the concrete pool shell. The shell extends beyond the coping so the coping and pavers beyond are effectively locked together. I am deciding whether to grout the 5mm gap between waterline tiles and pavers, or to use a...

Flow rate through passive main drain?

I have a single skimmer with a passive line to the main drain. What sort of flow rate do you get through the passive line compared to the amount coming in via the skimmer? Is it substantial? Does it aid circulation? I ask as were replastering the pool and I can either use a suction cover on...

Does Marble plaster delaminate if pool drained?

I am currently renovating our old marble plaster pool. The marble plaster has been sandblasted. I have heard marble plaster can delaminate if a pool is left empty for too long. Does anyone have experience with this? How long before it delaminates if its going to do so? Why does it delaminate...

Waterline tiles - keep level, or marry with coping?

I am about to retile our waterline with black mosaic tiles. The pool is 12m x 4m (40ft x 13 ft). Three sides are straight, and one long side has curves. Due to the existing concrete structure levels the pavers/coping are 10mm (3/8 inch) higher at the shallow end. I am wondering how best to...

Marble plaster - full chip out or not?

I am renovating our 40 year old marble plaster pool (called “marble sheen” in Australia). I am deciding how much plaster to remove prior to pebble plaster recoat. The marble plaster has clearly defined patches which are failing. The plaster is soft and crumbling in these areas. My 3000 watt...

    Are DE filters still popular?

Here in Australia in the 1980s there seemed to be a lot more DE filters around. I knew a few people that had them. Now I don't seem them so much, and the pool shops don't seem to stock them, nor carry the DE powder in any real quantity. Is this just an Australian thing, or have they faded in...

Why does low FC cause cloudy water?

The kids went in the spa today. They were all crammed in there, and after a few hours it went a little bit cloudy, despite being crystal clear earlier on. I checked Fc and it had dropped to 1, vs 6 beforehand. Cya is 50. I’ve noticed that low Fc causes cloudy water beforehand, but never...

Is Hyclor 4 in 1 test kit rebranded Taylor kit?

The Australian hardware chain bunnings sells these test kits: Hy-Clor 4 In 1 Pool Test Kit | Bunnings Warehouse It looks quite similar to these Taylor ones: Taylor K1004 Trouble-Shooter DPD Test Kit | eBay Is it the same product rebranded, or is it just a knock off?

Effect of Chlorine Neutraliser on TA test?

Do chlorine neutralisers eg sodium thiosulfate (taylor R-007, CCL Alkalinity buffer) affect the TA test at all?, similar to how it can interfere with a Phenol red pH test? E.g. if you added too much (say 4 drops instead of 2) would it cause a wrong result?

Do cartridge connections need to be watertight? Acceptable bypass?

I have recently swapped from a sand filter to a cartridge filter. The water is clear, and the filter appears to be working well., however I notice the cartridge connections inside the filter don't seem as though they'd be 100% watertight? They seem slightly loose. (My sand filter was similarly...

Clear Choice TA titration drops vs 4 in 1 drops?

I’m have two test kits, Aussie gold, and clear choice labs. They each have a TA test kit, which includes an indicator, and a titration bottle. The Aussie gold has blue-clear indicator. The Aussie gold has green magenta indicator. The kits give different answers. Clear choice says TA is 50...

Why is the industry standard TA 80-120ppm?

The traditional recommendations for alkalinity seems to be 80-120. I've seen recommendations up to 150ppm. For many years I did this and it put my in a vicuous cycle which required obscene amounts of acid and bicarb. Since adopting TFP I've ran alkalinity at 50-60ppm, which results in much...

Cartridge size for 13,000 gallon pool?

I have a sand filter at present which gives me no end of trouble. The problem is due to the native vegetation (gum trees and similar) which regularly drop fine hairlike flowers. These get into the filter and form a mat across the media. Backwashing does not remove this mat of hairs, and I end up...

My filter let some dirt into the pool. It had channeled I think. I’ve cleaned the filter and it’s ok again now, but the pool is a bit cloudy. I want it clearer for tomorrow (Christmas) Should I floc and vac to waste in the morning? Or instead run filter overnight? It’s now 5pm. I’d floc it...

    Calcium scale on new pebblecrete?

I pebblecreted our spa a month ago. DIY. Pebblesheen and white cement. The rest of the pool remains marble plaster. In that time the pebbles have developed tiny scale deposits on them. Appearance wise it looks like table salt stuck to the pebbles. Like you shook a salt shaker on the pebbles...
