Allowing your kids to swim in non TFPC pools

Yep, we do indeed boat/ski in a lake near us. Probably not a high level of available FC in there neither. :hammer:

Allowing your kids to swim in non TFPC pools

I searched this topic but couldn't really find a discussion about it so I apologize if it's been discussed before. With the summer in full swing my kids (ages 11 and 14) are continually being asked to swim parties at their friends house(s). I'm fairly confident most of the parents don't use...

Major's first swimming pool, getting the chemistry right. (Hopefully)

Yes. I pretty much only do the 10ml test. It's accurate enough for what is needed.

Fiberglass pool: chlorine tablets or liquid chlorine exclusively

Why didn't you use the Taylor kit for the CYA. That will give you accurate readings. Paper test swabs aren't accurate enough for what you need to know...ie FC level.

I got my test kit!! Now what!!?

I've dealt with something sorta similar to what you're going thru although i didn't have a swamp to begin with. My CYA turned to ammonia over the winter and my FC was being eaten at an extremely high rate. I went thru 50+ gallons of bleach before I was able to eradicate my water of the ammonia...

    Pool Cover Pump

Another one to consider is the Little Giant (model# 5-APCP). I've gone thru 2 in 11 years. We have some cold hard winters here in Indiana and I leave it out all winter. The only reason the one went out was my lack of preventative maintenance on it. We have many leaves that get on the cover over...

CYA on clearance sale at Rural King stores

The one in Vincennes Indiana had 10% liquid chlorine on closeout prices about 2-3 weeks ago. They had a case (4 gallon) for $5.83! I got all I could fit in my car. If I keep them in my insulated detached garage and away from any light what can I expect % wise next spring :?:

Need help blowing out lines for closing. Thanks

Hello, you are only an hour or so from my location so I can only assume your water temp is pretty close to mine (70°). If this is the case you might want to check your water periodically over the winter to make sure you don't open to a green mess in the spring (I speak from experience). They...

    How to grease Jandy valve

You can use Magic Lube or other silicone lubricant. Magic Lube can be picked up at most pool supply sites. Edit...oops sorry Bama, your post wasn't there when I submitted mine. Guess we think alike!

Throw some corn and carrots in the skimmer and we got soup!

Re: Throw some corn and carrots in the skimmer and we got so Dave, I have a small 1/4 acre pond about 100-200 yards from my pool and I saw a rather large snapper in there a year or so ago. Not sure how snappers lay eggs (i.e. do they leave the water and bury them far away from water/pond?)...

    Spa is not blowing bubbles

Here are a few steps you can try that I found online a few months ago. 1. Review the control panel. Make sure all jets you want to use are turned on. Spas with multiple motors may have multiple jet settings that create bubbles in the water. 2 Check all jets to make sure they are open and...

Throw some corn and carrots in the skimmer and we got soup!

I've seen a couple discussions on this forum about odd things found in pools. Here's another one(s). My son went outside last night and found one of these in the driveway. We went outside and he found another one. We started looking around the yard for more. My wife decided to check the pool. We...

Exactly why I searched and found this website years ago.

My original point was that this is the level of information everyone pretty much gets from all their local pool guy. For the life of me I don't understand how people maintain their pool w/o knowing the information we all know here. Dumb luck I guess...

Exactly why I searched and found this website years ago.

This guy reminds me of the reason I found this website. My local pool gal seemed like a knowledgeable enough person to trust but when I asked the question “why can’t I hold chlorine?” she gave me the reason. “Some years pools just act differently and this year I’m seeing a large number like...

Proper way to mix CYA reagent (R-0013)?

Now why didn't I think of that. I just got the speedstir last week but didn't think to use it for that. :hammer: I also take multiple readings but I got a much higher reading when I shook it that's where my confusion started.

Proper way to mix CYA reagent (R-0013)?

Reason I ask is because I was testing a pool this weekend and if I swirled the small bottle I would get a reading of < 30ppm. Tried two separate tests (i.e. new reagent each time) and they both came back the same. I then redid the test but my son shook the bottle like you would a mixed drink and...

    Drain/Refill Decision

I suggest re-reading the Pool School and the link I provided above for shocking. It will take a little over 4 gallons of 8% bleach to go from 0 to shock level for you (13) with your CYA number and you have to hold it at that level till you pass the 3 criteria spelled out in shocking procedure...

    Drain/Refill Decision

Do you have any idea on how all of a sudden you had a copper issue after all the years w/o that problem? If you do decide on a drain and refill you may want to take a look at your metal readings of your fill water. You could be adding to the problem. I don’t think it’s necessary since you’ve...

    Drain/Refill Decision

Hello jfmorris  Where did these numbers come from? Do you own one of the test kits recommended on this site? If they are accurate then I see no reason to drain and refill unless you do want to do a liner fix but it appears you just need to go thru the shocking process described here...

    I'm in bad shape...please help?

When I read in your initial post that you hadn't yet received your own test kit I assumed those numbers were from the guy that you were helping put his kid thru college (aka pool store dude) so I didn't pay much attention to your numbers.

    I'm in bad shape...please help?

Jenandthegang hello. One of the many things you'll learn on this site is not to throw something in the pool w/o first knowing why it's going in. Since you don't know the CYA level of your water you may be adding to the problem by using the granular chlorine. It contains CYA which is...

Simple question: When is it ok to swim?

Hello there gogetter  Yes the kids will be able to swim with those readings but there is one measurement missing from your list before you will want to get in there with them. THE TEMPERATURE OF THE WATER! Kids can swim in a high 60's mid 70's water but not most normal adults...

Am I using too much chlorine?

Cliffstone, from your post you seem like you have been using the BBB for awhile (more than just this year) if so why was you CYA at zero? Did you have to drain and refill your pool?

PH Accuracy with Shock Level Chlorine

I may be totally screwed up but I'm pretty sure your water is going thru your heater regardless if the heater is on or not so I'm not sure what a high FC reading would matter.

    Chemically Challenged-New Pool Owner

I believe that is the rating Pool Stores give customers as they gauge their facial reactions as they reach for their wallets in paying for the chemicals. Anything under 3 (out of 5) they know the customer will more than likely be back but if it's over 3 then they know the customer will have had...

Welcome to TFP  Read pool school linked up above this page. I would perform an OCLT tonight. You need to pass this test before you quit shocking. Here's the link to shocking. http://www.troublefreepool.com/pool-school/shocking_your_pool by the way, 25 years before you have your first...
