Skimmer lid flying off and loud "whooshing" sound heard when pump turned off

Problem has been solved. I wanted to update this to possibly help others who might have the same problem. The suction air leak was somewhere between the threaded inlet connection on the pump, the jandy valve controlling suction power from the skimmer and wall vacuum, or one of the PVC joints...

Skimmer lid flying off and loud "whooshing" sound heard when pump turned off

I had mentioned in my other comment I couldn't find an adapter at Lowe's. Do you know of one online?

Skimmer lid flying off and loud "whooshing" sound heard when pump turned off

A constant steam of small, tiny bubbles are coming out of all the returns.

Skimmer lid flying off and loud "whooshing" sound heard when pump turned off

From pool school: 1. The most common source is the pump basket lid. It must have an airtight seal. Replacing the O-ring often helps. Proper cleaning and lubrication of the O-ring with a silicone based lubricant (Magic Lube is one brand) may be necessary….do not use WD-40 or petroleum jelly. I...

Skimmer lid flying off and loud "whooshing" sound heard when pump turned off

I see. Very helpful information. I'll try the garden hose today. And I would see water coming out of the location of the air leak doing this method?

Skimmer lid flying off and loud "whooshing" sound heard when pump turned off

Why does the air leak temporarily go away when I backwash? Is it because backwashing finally removes all the air out of the filter and after the pump runs for a few hours it has had time to suck enough air back in to not hold prime? And my wife suggested it was our pool cleaner. She said the...

Skimmer lid flying off and loud "whooshing" sound heard when pump turned off

I'll look into replacing the impeller and/or the pump. Would the oversized pump increase the chance of an air leak? I'm sorry for the newbie question but want to make sure I know what I'm looking for. I'll turn a hose on and stick it in the skimmer hole with the pump off. Will water leak...

Skimmer lid flying off and loud "whooshing" sound heard when pump turned off

I want to make sure I have this correct. The pump being oversized over pressurizes the system, more likely causing an air leak?

Skimmer lid flying off and loud "whooshing" sound heard when pump turned off

Thank you for the quick reply. I've owned this pool for 4 years almost and only in the last year has this problem cropped up, so I'm unsure if the pump is oversized. I have a Hayward SP3010EECP Super II pump. Where would I push water through the pump with a garden hose? I watched the...

Skimmer lid flying off and loud "whooshing" sound heard when pump turned off

This issue has been driving me nuts for some time now. When I turn the my pump off I hear a loud whooshing sound and water backs up through the plumbing and comes out of the skimmer, sometimes with so much force it blows the lid off. It also will push the weir flap up into a stuck position so...

Having trouble finding replacement housing and diffuser gaskets

I have a Hayward pump model "K48L2N104." I'm looking to replace the housing gasket and diffuser gasket as I believe they are the source of an air leak after lots of troubleshooting. A google search doesn't really turn up much for that model number, however. Any idea which Hayward pump I have?

Rarely need to backwash sand filter?

Good to know that I'm not missing anything. I think I've just been told so many wrong things in the past that I assumed backwashing would still be a routine maintenance item, even with maintaining correct chemical levels. And thanks for the advice on the pressure gauge. Any recommendations as...

Rarely need to backwash sand filter?

I don't have a salt water generator. I manually add liquid chlorine every night. My wife prefers the feel when I add a little salt to the water and that's why I have a salt level to list. (y)

Rarely need to backwash sand filter?

Hi all, This website and the pool maintenance guide has been an excellent source of information for me and my pool is truly trouble free for the first time (3rd year of owning this home and pool). I thought it would be annoying adding liquid chlorine every night but it has quickly become...

Couple Questions about Adding Diatomaceous Earth to Sand Filter

Thank you all for the kind and helpful responses. I think I'll keep using it until my SLAM is done, and then hold off unless I'm not happy with the clarity of the water. Man, the water has never looked better during the SLAM and with the DE in the filter.

Couple Questions about Adding Diatomaceous Earth to Sand Filter

This is the first time I've ever added it and the pool is looking very good. Granted, I've never SLAMed the pool either, so it could just be that. I'll hold off on it after the next backwash and see if I like how the water looks after a bit.

Couple Questions about Adding Diatomaceous Earth to Sand Filter

Thanks for the responses, mknauss. For my first question, I was more asking if pool owners who add D.E. to their sand filters add it every time after they backwash. I know if I want more D.E. in the sand filter that it must be added after a backwash, but should I add it every time I backwash...

Couple Questions about Adding Diatomaceous Earth to Sand Filter

Hi all, just a couple of quick questions for those of you who add D.E. to your sand filters: 1. I know you have to add D.E. after you backwash because it flushes it all out. Do you add more D.E. every time you backwash? Or do you just add some after a heavy swimming load/rain storm, etc...

2 pool equipment leaks, please help!

Thank you for the response, Texas Splash. That is very helpful. In the first picture, I currently only have a leak at the elbow going into the circle 2 T piece. I think I will have to replace all the parts numbered 1-4 as I expected to really fix it, but will try the epoxy and see if I can...

2 pool equipment leaks, please help!

Bummer on the photos not posting. I was only able to upload 3 of my 7 photos with the storage space I had so I picked what I figured are the most relevant/helpful photos. Thanks for the heads up on the available photo space on the forum. :)

2 pool equipment leaks, please help!

Hi all, I have a couple of leaks in my pool plumbing equipment and would like your opinions on what the best way to fix them is. Since I am new to this stuff and don't know what many of the locations/parts are called, I took some photos to show the leaks. First leak is circled in red (Photo...
