I drain to like 6" below the skimmer. If I drain now, I'm draining "bad water". If I SLAM, then when I drain, I'm draining "good water". So it's less wasteful on water to drain now. So maybe go interim, get the leaves out, close with algae, and plan to use more bleach in the spring? What do...

Does CYA "degrade" or does the test just kind of suck? I did an AA treatment and big water removal at the start of the season. I assumed a CYA of 0 (likely it was a bit higher due not removing ALL water) and added 10 cups of CYA via sock in front of return. A while later, real life hit me...

Just to kind of wrap this up...after ~24 hours, the stains appear to be completely gone! I drained the "AA water with iron" very low, and did a long refill - can't wait to see my water bill! LOL. But the pool has never looked this good. Balanced everything out today...added a bunch of CYA...

I just re-tested now. pH has gone down some...from the AA right? pH: 7.0 TA: 30

I tested before the AA and it was a smidge over 7.2, maybe 7.3 or 7.4. Def. under 7.5 or whatever the next rung is on my tester. I'll check the pH again, and lower if it's at that next 7.5 rung. Thank you!

OK I'll let it circulate overnight and make some moves around noon-ish tomorrow, when I started the adventure. I did brush it a lot, but it hasn't seemed to help yet. I didn't bother with the algaecide as I'm planning on doing a water dump and refill ASAP.

Great point, thank you! You may have saved the life of a pool today, LOL. Not going to "waste the water" then. I'll just do a normal close to a few inches below the skimmer, than do the drain in the spring after the AA treatment to get that yucky iron water out.

My final plans to tackle the iron stains.... So I ran the numbers. A partial water replacements should cost me about $34.76. A 2-pack of MM costs $39.44 on Amazon, plus PITA & time. So based on this, I'm going to close almost normally, but lower my water level more than I usually would...

How long does it take for staining to re-appear? My original hope was to let it circulate with AA then just drain the water and close. But yeah, makes sense it would be a bad idea to leave the AA water in over the winter. I was more afraid that if I took a few more days to balance etc...
