Pool Pillows for winterizing - what do they do?

These answers seem to imply that I need to keep the top of the cover more or less dry. Is that correct? We often have a foot or more of standing water in places on the cover, which we drain before opening in the spring. Is there a reason to drain the cover often?

Pool Pillows for winterizing - what do they do?

When we closed last month we placed a pool pillow under the cover as we always do. Then my wife asked, what does that actually do? And while we're at it, how big should it be and how much should it be inflated?

    What size cover?

I never know what size cover to get for our 25ft round above ground. Is there actually a correct size? What should I be shopping for? They only last a year or two before the grommets tear out anyway. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

And she says "Honey, the pool isn't green anymore"

She thinks I just poured a ton of chlorine in. What she doesn't know was that I bought the last 4 cases of 12.5% at our nearby Ocean State and did 2 1/2 days of SLAM (and probably 1 or 2 more to go). It's amazing how if you have the wherewithal to follow those simple directions your wife might...

    How to replace the skimmer?

Well, I got the new skimmer in. The problems didn't start until i started filling the pool up to the skimmer level. So I guess something didn't fit right. Water's dripping from around the new gasket. So I guess I have to drain it some and start over. I'm guessing I have to make the hole a...

    How to replace the skimmer?

I wish I'd read @phonedave's good advice before I ordered parts online. Even so, I lucked out. I also mismeasured. I was prepared to cut and drill. But the new Hayward part seemed like it fit the existing hole and the screw holes. Boy was I surprised! Like with most pool related things I have...

Too much CYA, what to do?

I measured. I must have measured wrong. I should have measured twice. I added 4lbs and now my CYA is up around 60. Other than emptying half the pool is there a way to get it back down to a manageable number? I'm fine with emptying half the pool, but there's a drought going on.

    How to replace the skimmer?

It turns out the Hayward SP1091LX is just a little bigger across, and the screw holes don't match up , but I feel as long as the skimmer isn't smaller than the current one I can make it work. Any argument there? Hayward is 5 15/16 wide, whereas mine is 5 3/4. And the Hayward screw holes are all...

    How to replace the skimmer?

Thank you. I have my dimensions written down and finding it is devilishly difficult to find a match. I called Inyo but they don't have a way to look up by size. So 'll just continue to google. Maybe I just need to get close. top side 5 3/4 x 5 1/2 Screw Holes 2.25 across the top and 2.0...

    How to replace the skimmer?

I need to replace the old skimmer that developed a hairline crack down the side last winter. The Doheny Skimmer System, the Hayward Dyna Flow, and the Swimline 8940 all look similar. Do skimmers all come in a standard size and they'll just fit a 5 3/4 inch wide hole? Or is it going to get more...

    Need to replace the skimmer

I need to replace this water intake assembly. Any advice on what to order, how to measure, steps to take in replacing it, etc. would be appreciated. Our old pool had a plastic dam that covered the intake that seemed to do a good job keeping the water out over winter. But, again, I'm not sure...

    3 day SLAM

@dozer - Starting off, the water quality, I could almost see the bottom, and there was a layer of slime accumulated, but not many leaves. At first vacuuming it looked like our cartridge filter had failed, so I replaced it. I set my CYA at 40, (It was zero to start with), adjusted TA and pH where...

    Cartridge Filter Question

Maybe 2 hours before this photo. I did the CYA, pH, and alkalinity first. Then two hours later wife got in and started the first vacuuming of the season. I guess I'm going to assume the cartridge has a defect and toss it. I don't think I should be seeing any dirty water coming out the return...

Filter gets really dirty after <12h during pool opening

I had the same problem last year until @mknauss advised me to run without the cartridge while slamming, especially if there was a high algae load. It worked for me, and I had a beautiful pool last year. Obviously, put the cartridge back in when you vacuum.

    Cartridge Filter Question

I'm not sure what pad means? But here's the pump and filter. This filter is a PLM100. The grit you see around it is undesolved CYA granules. I think I'll switch it over to a PLD50, which I keep as a spare. The PLD50 needs DE and needs to be cleaned more often, but it does a better job of...

    Cartridge Filter Question

We have a sta-rite cartridge filter that I suspect is a problem. First day opening the pool, my wife got in and started vacuuming. That's when I noticed the return water was looking kind of murky, as if the stuff she was vacuuming was passing straight through. I took the filter apart to make...

Best way to get the water off the cover?

@Mdragger88 - brilliant - we did the soft taco idea, undoing the wire only half way around so that one side is always attached. Did what you suggested, pumped that water out, worked the edges in, undoing the wire as we went until we had a smaller and smaller bag. Ran the surface pump in there...

The Pool Cover, The LEAVES, the WATER, and How To Do It Better Than Last Year: UPDATE

@Bperry - Rubber Inner Tubes sounds like pure genius. Wish I'd thought of it. Our pillow got unhooked somehow and floated to the side, but multiple inner tubes would have solved the problem, and would have been much easier to inflate. Next Fall... that's what I'm doing.

Best way to get the water off the cover?

I'm looking for recommendations to get the pool cover off without spilling any muck from the pool cover into the pool. I've never done this successfully as long as we've owned the pool. This year I've been using a little pump, recommended in these forums, with a weighted end and a squeeze ball...

    End of Season?

I stopped by our Ocean State (central CT) today pick up a couple cases of shock. They've swapped out their stock for winterizers, so no more cheap chlorine. I take this as a sign of end of season. We usually go through 2-3 gallons a week so I'll run completely out this weekend. I think I should...

    One month since SLAM and...

the pool is still beautiful. I wish I'd had wherewithal to do a real and complete SLAM much much earlier. I cannot believe how clear the pool is. I can see the bottom of the far end. That's never happened before. And I have not had to clean the filter once, and the flow and water pressure have...

Does R-0870 Powder ever go bad?

Bottom line - I bought a fresh DPD-FAS kit from TFP ( best price I found on-line ) and all my chlorine measuring issues are solved. It turns vibrant purple the way it's supposed to, and it clears up to clear instead of going kind of muddy gray. So, hurray for new test kits!
