    High TA and low PH

I just tested the water again and FC and TC were both at 3ppm after adding 14oz 10% liquid chlorine this morning. Would a pool sprinkler also work in place of an air compressor? I will test the fill water too and report back.

    High TA and low PH

Thanks, I didn’t know that they also lowered the pH. I’m taking it out pronto!

    High TA and low PH

Hey everyone, I have a new small 3,600 gallon oval pool. I opened it a week ago and have been trying to balance the water chemistry. The water is mostly clear, but it does burn your eyes. I couldn't find any stabilizer and have ordered some, so I'm using a chlorine tablet until it comes in to...

Is it safe to swim with algae? It just won't go away.

Truth be told, I really need to get a better test kit, but in the meantime I've been using an HTH liquid kit to test the chlorine in my pool. I've been battling algae for weeks and the only way I seem to keep it at bay is by shocking the water every night with bleach. Anyway, my water is clear...

    Broken filter?

I didn't know you had to wait 10 seconds! Usually, when I backwash and rinse, I immediately turn it back to filter. I'll try waiting and see how it goes. Edit: when I think back though, sand goes in the pool even after the filter has been off for several hours, so this might not be the culprit...

    Broken filter?

Thank you. I was able to get the 6 port valve off and after inspection, there is one slit in the strainer at the top, under the 6 port valve mechanism, but it's no bigger than the holes that already exist throughout the strainer. So I don't know if that is causing the problem or not.

    Broken filter?

My newish sand filter puts sand back in the pool when I turn it on. It's not a whole lot, but enough to cause concern I think. So I took it apart to investigate, but I didn't really find anything wrong with it other than one little cut on the strainer or whatever it's called. Now, I can't...

    Sand going back into pool

No, I just added the sand to fill between the min and max line. There isn't instructions telling you to add water beforehand with my filter. Perhaps I need to take it apart then.

    Sand going back into pool

I have a Summerwaves Sand Filter and it's putting sand back into the pool everytime I turn it on. I've only had it for two weeks. The manual says to use Silica No. 20 sand with particle size range 0.45 to 0.85mm and a Uniformity Coefficient less than 1.75. It also says in the troubleshooting...

    Algae or Dirt?

So chlorine tested at 1ppm (which is crazy because I run my salt water system 10hr per day). I shocked it last night and today it's blue again, but there's still a lot of algae or dirt on the bottom. I also noticed that when I turn on my sand filter, some sand is getting blown into the pool...

    Algae or Dirt?

I have been fighting a dirty pool floor for 3 days without any luck. I assumed it was dirt because the kids were getting in after running barefoot through the yard, but it's just not going away. Could this be algae instead? I have been vacuuming to waste daily. When I'm done, the floor is...

Low flow and 0 psi on sand filter

Thanks! It's a brand new filter and the pool was taken down during the winter, so I don't think that's the problem. I will check the hoses tomorrow to see if they have any obstructions. I think I have the hoses connected correctly... they were both 1.5" hoses of the same length.

Low flow and 0 psi on sand filter

I have a new Summerwaves Sand Filter that has only been running for about a week now. The water flow is pretty slow and the psi reading stays at 0 all the time. I tried backwashing and rinsing several times without any improvement, so I was hoping someone here may have some suggestions on how to...

Do I have to backwash everytime I start my sand filter?

The manual for my Summerwaves Sand Filter says I need to backwash and rinse everytime I start my filter, but doing this is causing a lot of water loss. Is this necessary? Right now I am having to add water to my pool about twice per week and I'm sure I've lost CYA and salt this week.

    New SWG questions

I also added more stabilizer to bring it up to 70ppm.

    New SWG questions

I haven't got it yet so I'm testing with an HTH liquid test. The water is blue and clear. There's not an option to adjust the output on the saltwater system other than setting it to Boost. It has a built in timer on the regular mode for 10 hours and 6 hours on Boost.

    New SWG questions

I ran my saltwater system for 10 hours yesterday and left it off overnight. This morning my FC was at 1ppm and according to Pool Math I need to run my saltwater system for 10 hours at 0.29lbs of chlorine output per day to get to 5ppm. Does this sound reasonable?

    New SWG questions

I don't know how much FC is being consumed yet. I'm waiting on my TF-100 to come in.

    New SWG questions

Thanks! So I will run it on normal for 2-3 hours per day and see where the chlorine levels are at. I'm sure I'll figure out a good balance after a few days of running the system.

    New SWG questions

Thanks for your help! I think I will start off running it for 6 hours on boost and check the chlorine tomorrow. According to the chart you mentioned, I need a much higher CYA than what the manual recommends for the saltwater system. It recommended 14oz of stabilizer to bring it to 30ppm.

So do I have to run this 24/7? Im a bit confused.

    New SWG questions

The only thing I can find in the manual is this: Maximum Chlorine output per hr: 5.5 Grams / Hour For above ground pools up to 7,000 gallons

    New SWG questions

This year I am converting my pool to a saltwater pool! I have a smaller pool, it's the Summerwaves Elite 14'x42" metal frame pool. I purchased a new Sand Filter (Summerwaves 10" sand filter) and the Summerwaves Salt Water System. My pool is around 3,500 gallons so following the directions I...

    New Sand Filter

Okay, that makes sense. I think the filter is going to clean it up pretty well I have one last question. If I run a backwash hose out to my outside drain, is it safe to leave it connected to the filter all the time? The manual says to replace the cap after backwashing and rinsing, so I'm not...

    New Sand Filter

Really? I'm glad I said something! I didn't know you couldn't use it in a sand filter.

    New Sand Filter

Thanks. I'm not sure how much of the sand got in the pool. I guess I will have to open the sand filter and see how much is left in it. I may add some floc to see if it helps.

    New Sand Filter

Thank you! It turns out, I removed the wrong cap when I went to backwash and rinse my filter for first time use. After looking at the manual again, I see that I removed the drain cap. Now my pool is cloudy, which I assume is sand? Will I have to add more sand to my pump now? I went ahead and...

    New Sand Filter

I just bought a new Sand Filter for my small metal frame pool. The instructions are telling me to backwash and then rinse the filter. Does this pull in water from the pool inlet (where the water gets returned to the pool after filtering)?

    Filter Cartridge

No, it's city water. If the slow flow rate isn't something to worry about, then I'll keep this filter for the rest of the season.
