    Add CYA before starting SLAM?

Thanks, will do. Gotta go find a second sock - my CYA sock only holds enough for 10 ppm

    Add CYA before starting SLAM?

Thanks for quick reply, I'll add CYA now. What's baffling is that we've been able to maintain FC at not less than 6.5 with 0 CC all this time; I didn't expect that during a full algae bloom and falling CYA. Sure hope my CYA testing is accurate (the reagent is in date).

    Add CYA before starting SLAM?

After 28 days with no power to the pool pump, we finally have power and a working pump and filter. In spite of brushing daily and maintaining pH and FC, we have an algae load and will be doing our first major SLAM. We're familiar with the process per Pool School but have one question before we...

Maintaining pool during extended power outage

Thank you, all. Will clean filter today and see if it can dry in our tropical humidity (may bring it into the AC for final drying), and soldier on with chlorine and brushing! We don't have an option to set up temporary power but are now scheduled for Aug 3 for the electric upgrades/replacements...

Maintaining pool during extended power outage

Our electrical sub-panel for the pool burned out (literally) and is not repairable or replaceable. It's 50 years old, was installed in a way that is no longer up to code, and we actually have to replace the meter main service as well. It's already been a week and will likely be another 2 weeks...

Use salt test results for CSI in a non-SWG pool?

Thank you! It certainly will be easier to maintain pH at 7.8 - 7.9 :). Just disheartening to see my CSI move down, but I guess it's still in a good range.

Use salt test results for CSI in a non-SWG pool?

I've been using TFP and Pool Math for over 2 years, with success and great satisfaction. This summer I switched from the TF-100 test kit to Taylor K-2006C (not because of any problem with the TF kit). The Taylor kit has a salt test, so I've been testing the salt level. I do not have a SWG pool...

    TFP Challenge

Thank you for the newsletter...I'm glad to make a donation that will be matched! I like to "renew" my support annually but was behind this year and needed a reminder. I rarely post on the forum, but I use TFP methods and Pool Math every single day, and am very grateful for the wealth of...

Pump sizing and variable vs two speed decision

Thank you all for the valuable input. Went with a Pentair (Sta-Rite) SuperMax VS pump and decided to have it professionally installed. Happy with it so far but it's only been a day.

Pump sizing and variable vs two speed decision

Our motor just died and we felt it would be a good opportunity to upgrade. We've gone through the calculations for feet of head and are more confused than ever. We currently have a 23,100 gallon pool with a Pentair Pinnacle pump and 1.5 hp AO Smith Centurion motor (dead) which runs (ran) at...

    2 speed motor timer questoin

My pump motor just died. I'd like to replace it with a 2 speed motor. Do I need to add a new T106R timer to my existing T104R timer and run new wires to the motor now or can I just connect the 2 speed motor and run it off the T104R timer until I have time to add the T106R? Thanks

CLICK HERE to Become a TroubleFreePool.com Supporter!

I just "renewed" our TFP support for 2017. I initially joined in April 2016 after we refurbished our ailing 50-year-old pool. After pool-storing our pool to death for the previous 36 years, it has been such a joy to be operating on TFPC principles now! So far I haven't had the "pleasure" of...

    Muriatic acid cost?

I pay $4.50 per gallon of 31% at our local independent pool shop, Bud Mudd's, in Winter Park. Same price for a long time!

Is a permit usually required for the plastering/replacing tile and coping?

Here in Central Florida, our county (Seminole) requires a permit for refinishing/replastering a pool. It's a new requirement, just since January this year, so they can inspect to ensure that older pools are updated with anti-entrapment type covers on the main drain.

Want to add Borates – is my water chemistry ready?

Camueller, Thanks for the insight on stability! I think having new plaster is a factor in acid consumption, but apparently I can do a better job by skipping the baking soda to let the TA settle itself a bit. And I'm happy to wait and see how that works out. How do you like the borates in your water?

Want to add Borates – is my water chemistry ready?

Oh, OK, I'll wait to add the borates. I've been wanting to see how far the TA would drift down, but was afraid it might get out of control. How low should I let it go? How will I know when the pH is stable? oops, just saw reply to let TA go as low as 50. THANKS!

Want to add Borates – is my water chemistry ready?

I’ve been having a blast using TFP forums, pool school, and pool math for the past 4 months to maintain our very old but newly replastered pool. I want to add Borates – can you help me determine if the water chemistry is ready? I test and make adjustments daily. Today’s results are: Water...

Got the CYA Standard and CH Standard, still have problems testing

Oh, good, I'll recheck CH tomorrow and re-target for 225 for starters. I've been able to keep CSI within the -0.3 to +0.3 parameters, usually around -0.1. Many thanks!

Got the CYA Standard and CH Standard, still have problems testing

Thanks for the quick responses! Mr Bruce, thanks for the reassurances. jblizzle, I'll try the alternate CH test method tomorrow. *Yes, this was the 28-day start-up instruction on CH level, which the warranty references. They didn't provide any instruction past the 28-day start up. Is it time...

Got the CYA Standard and CH Standard, still have problems testing

I’ve been using TFP methods and TF-100 test kit for 3 months now and still have difficulty with the CYA and CH testing. I test these weekly because we have new plaster, and there’s so much helpful information on this site, so you’d think I’d have it figured out by now, but I want to be sure I’m...

Acid washing new prism matrix question-Help!

I can tell you that we had the same outcome on our steps with Pearl Matrix, which is also a WetEdge product. Our resurfacing was completed in early March, and the condition has not resolved itself with brushing, even though the contractor said it might. We haven't pursued it, since we had a...

    Pipe size and pump recommendation?

Yes, it does fill up completely. There is a thin stream of very small air bubbles coming into the pump basket, which the pool tech thinks are coming from cracks in the diverter valve, which we plan to replace (or maybe just replace parts after disassembly and inspection). And we do seem to have...

    Pipe size and pump recommendation?

Thank you, husband is very happy with your response (less plumbing work for him)! The tech just said the pump is oversized and recommended going with smaller one when this one dies, and possibly a VS, because the noise from this one is bothersome. The equipment pad is right next to the patio...

    Pipe size and pump recommendation?

We survived recent major refurbishments to our 49-year- old pool and patio environs, which included replacing the entire screen enclosure, upgrading the deck with concrete pavers, resurfacing the pool interior (plus new tile, coping, and skimmer), and replacing the old DE filter with a cartridge...

    MNiels

Hi from sunny Central Florida! I am the caretaker of my husband's pool, since I am first to retire. We've owned the pool (and the attached house) for 35 years and just had it resurfaced for the second time. The project included some equipment updates (filter, skimmer), new tile and coping, new...
