Going on vacation for 4 days - what are my options?

We moved here about a month ago so don't know all of our neighbors yet. I can see if one of them will be around this weekend - depends if his football team is playing.

Going on vacation for 4 days - what are my options?

Hey all, My wife and I are going out of town for four days (Thursday-Sunday). What are my best options to keeping the FC up while we are gone? For reference, we just did a water exchange two weeks ago so our CYA is around 35-40. Water is currently clear. We have had algae issues in the past...

Failed OCLT with 1.5 ppm lost - preparing to SLAM

Wow! It decreases in potency quite a lot quicker than I anticipated, even when kept inside in 75F environment. I will take back the 3x unused 3 packs then.

Failed OCLT with 1.5 ppm lost - preparing to SLAM

Ok, cool! Thanks again. I have wayyy too much bleach now haha. Only used 2 of the 12 gallons I bought. Used the bulk discount at Home Depot. It will last a while if I keep it inside the house and in a closet, right?

Failed OCLT with 1.5 ppm lost - preparing to SLAM

Here are the results from last night and this morning: Before starting the SLAM, pH was at 7.8 and FC was at 3. I added muriatic acid to bring it down to 7.2 and then an hour or so later added the cholorine. 2000 hrs: FC was 19 ppm with the 5mL testing - so not as accurate. May have...

Failed OCLT with 1.5 ppm lost - preparing to SLAM

Ah, ok. Thanks for the tip on the CYA being 40, not 34. Will go with the higher SLAM FC of 16 then. Better safe than sorry! Is there a way to perform the FC test using less reagent - for example, can I use 5 mL of pool water instead of 10 and then use a 1:1 ratio with the drops instead of...

Failed OCLT with 1.5 ppm lost - preparing to SLAM

Hi, yes, I have had the TF-100 for a few weeks. All test results were performed with the TF-100. I haven't been to the pool store in weeks!

Failed OCLT with 1.5 ppm lost - preparing to SLAM

Last night we performed our first OCLT after draining and refilling the pool on Saturday. Yesterday afternoon I checked the FC and it was low at 2.5 ppm. I added Cl and checked again at about 11 PM and it was 5.5 ppm. This morning, we were down to FC 4.0. CC for all the tests since the re-fill...

New pool and first TF-100 Measurements - CYA 100+

Ah, okay! That makes some sense. We did follow the directions to wipe the tip between drops with a damp paper towel. Hopefully it stabilizes as you say. We will work on doing a water exchange on Sunday after our guests leave. Our pool is currently 86 degrees and the source water is definitely...

New pool and first TF-100 Measurements - CYA 100+

Right. He also said a SLAM would take too much chlorine given the high CYA level in the pool. Sounds like I will need to partially drain the pool to get the CYA down to the right level and then SLAM?

New pool and first TF-100 Measurements - CYA 100+

No, I didn't order originally with my test kit but it sounds like everyone really likes it. I will order one today. Also, just saw a few spots of algae on the walls, mainly around the built in benches in the corner. Brushed it off. Should I add a bit more chlorine?

New pool and first TF-100 Measurements - CYA 100+

Let me run the test again tonight and Saturday morning. I found the more detailed instructions for the FAS-DPD test FAS-DPD Chlorine Test - Trouble Free Pool and am not confident in the numbers provided yesterday. I think the hard part is determining when is the water "completely clear." When I...

New pool and first TF-100 Measurements - CYA 100+

Okay, thaks. I will keep the receipts and take them back next time we go to the store. Does anyone actually use Borox as a laundry booster?

New pool and first TF-100 Measurements - CYA 100+

Thanks, Duraleigh. I will take the measurements again tomorrow morning when I wake up around 0615 and update the results. Am I correct that I should not add any chemicals tonight? I also went to the store tonight and bought 3x gallons of HD liquid chlorine, some muriatic acid, Borox, and a 12lb...

New pool and first TF-100 Measurements - CYA 100+

Diluted CYA test (7.5 mL of pool, 7.5 mL of tap) gave us a reading of 90 ppm (45 x 2). I think that is pretty consistent with the results of the first test since it turned cloudy just about at 100 ppm.

New pool and first TF-100 Measurements - CYA 100+

Hey guys and gals, My TF-100 came today so when I came home my wife and I went to testing the pool and also our source water (kitchen tap). FYI, we have only owned the house and pool for two weeks. Pool Measurements pH: 7.8 - makes sense it is a bit high given the 3" chlorine tablets and no...

Howdy y'all! New pool owners from Texas

Thanks! That is a good tip. I guess I should test it coming out of the external faucet that fills the pool? Or does it not make a difference if it comes from the kitchen sink?

Howdy y'all! New pool owners from Texas

Thanks again! We will stick with it for the time being then. Will post the numbers in the recommended thread when I get the kit. Yes, I have the PoolMath app downloaded on my phone already.

Howdy y'all! New pool owners from Texas

Thanks for the reply! I have read the ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry. If we do not have any active algae, what should our next steps be until we can test the water ourselves?

Would you get a pool again?

On the other hand, in an area where most houses have pools you could say that a house without a pool would be less valuable as it is lacking a standard feature/ammenity. Being in TX, I would say that over half the houses in our immediate area have pools. We specifically bought a house with a...

Howdy y'all! New pool owners from Texas

My wife and I just bought a house with an in-ground pool and hot tub in the Spring, TX area. Considering we have lived in Texas for less than 2 months, perhaps we aren't quite ready to use "y'all" as frequently as some do but it does come in handy! My wife and I went to "pool school" at our...
