Closing steps first season using TFPs

Great thanks-I'll let it drift down to about 6 (CYA between 30-40) and then add poly 60 and let it circulate for about an hour @ajw22 Since you are in NJ also, are you closing soon? I assume your water cant be down to 60 or so yet-mine is still 70

Getting a winter cover to last longer

Do you let the chlorine level drift back down before closing or close it at/near SLAM level?

Getting a winter cover to last longer

What in the world do you do to get your above ground winter cover to last more than 1 season? I always buy the "Best" cover (thickest, best quality) of the kinds offered. Every year when I take it off to open the pool, I hold it up to the light and can see pin holes of light/porous through it...

Closing steps first season using TFPs

Hello All, Ok so this was my first full season using TFP, so I would kind of like to get the closing right also. I have read the pool school closing article and some closing threads on here. Here is what I normally do (with some questions sprinkled it), want to see if I am missing anything here...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

Update-tested pool at night was 5.5 tonight with 0 CC. So it only lost 2 FC is 24 hours. Having trouble believing this is organic with that result. But i dont know why this is in the pool then

    Frustrated while SLAMing

How would i even clean that? I took it off of the pool on purpose while SLAMing as I thought that the high FC levels could make it fall apart. If I did this whole process for nothing-ugh. It has a rip in it anyway so we are throwing it out when we close the pool.

    Frustrated while SLAMing

So, the stuff is back. I haven't brushed the pool in a few days (but assume you aren't supposed to have to brush every day when not SLAMing) and the solar cover was on. I just took a peak underneath and see plenty of it again. Last night, I checked the FC and it was 7.5. The last time I added...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

A little update-the last time I added any liquid chlorine was monday night. Yesterday I didn;t even test it because I knew I wasn't going to drop from 20 down under 6 in one day. So I tested tonight 48 hours later and am still getting a reading of 14 (it was cloudy/rainy all day today). Sure I...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

Vacuumed and brushed about an hour ago. Backwashed also even though i backwashed after vacuuming yesterday (i normally dont like to backwash that often but in case any of the dead stuff was going to recirculate i wanted to blow it out) So i will check in a couple hours and see-thats plenty of...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

Going outside to vacuum now. If that stuff comes back, i'll report that-dont know what the next step would be if it does is it normal to have to SLAM every year? I know pool school recommends SLAMing for opening and closing, but can i expect most (or every) year, this process will be necessary...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

I was just following the extended test directions. It says to use 2 level dippers, but then later says "At very high FC levels it is likely that you will need to use more than the normal amount. " So if the normal amount is 2, then more than that is at least 3, right? Does the size of the drops...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

Wow never heard anyone else say they had this also Just curious-you say that the SLAM worked for you, but you still have the dust/particle stuff? Was the SLAM for something else or for that and you just gave up after that long? (I cannot imagine doing this for a month-the $ on LC and running...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

Ok so maybe I am done? I was afraid of landing in "maybe" land. I woke up super early to beat the sun and check-i SLAMed to 20 last night i tested and got 18.5-wow what a punch in the grapes, 37 drops was the worst possible number, but i do it again to confirm and keep getting different numbers...

So then if i am SLAMing to 20 and am losing approx 10 per day, do I have a chemistry problem?

    Frustrated while SLAMing

It is above ground. No lights and the ladder is brand new this year (I needed a new ladder anyway, but was hoping that when I threw the old one our, the problem would go away). I actually did just soak a scour pad in bleach and clean the skimmer mouth as well as brush the walls

    Frustrated while SLAMing

Ok so today lost 2 when i woke up-added it vacuum/backwash/brush at 2:30 test again at 4:30-down 7 fc from 20 to 13-added 7 This is crazy-i keep wondering if what i am seeing is dead algae, where is the live algae that is dying and apparently has been for 2+ years? Ladder is new this year so it...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

Side note, in the beginning of the season, i used a bunch of MPS (non chlorine oxidizer) at the advice of the store (before i got my TF100 and advice here). Article says that MPS can show up as CC. But that was 8 weeks ago is there any chance that is still in the pool and skewing my results or...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

Yes, so i woke up today and lost 2 FC again. Problem is, the light was on the pool for 3 hours-so again there is a confounding variable. I'm still at it, but it is just frustrating because the pool water is so clear it is almost invisible at this point, so i cant believe there is a problem, but...

    Combined Chlorine Problem-help!

@jblizzle I am presently doing a SLAM again-i see in pool school that MPS will throw off/count as either FC or CC (there must be a typo because pool school says both). It has been like 7 weeks since i added all of that MPS-is there any chance that is still in the pool and skewing my results or...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

@setsailsoon Yes I am filtering 24/7. Pressure seems fine. I have maybe a touch more than 40 CYA so I am SLAMing for 50-there is a chance my CYA is 40 or less as I mentioned i hate that test. but even if my CYA was really low, i shouldnt lose FC in the dark (I'll test around 11pm before bed so...

    Frustrated while SLAMing

Several points, but all related: So, I am a bit frustrated with the SLAM process. Let me clarify I am grateful that I was taught this, but anytime I am doing it (like right now), I end up with a million questions, most stemming from when I am done. Now I understand and have read the 3 criteria...
