Fixing a leaky outlet from a DE Filter

Quote Thanks blazer58, this is helpful. I incorrectly did lube the threads on the union and I'm hoping I can get it off now once I drain the filter. After looking at the source of the leak again I think its right where the bulkhead exits the bottom filter tank. I think you are right and I...

Fixing a leaky outlet from a DE Filter

Strap wrench worked to loosen the outlet coupling. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fix the leak with re-tightening it with lube on the threads. Now I can't get it to loosen again. I'll try again after I drain the filter to clean the grids.

Thanks Richard! I will go get one now. I'm hoping that using lube and teflon tape on the threads and re-tightening will fix the leak. Fingers crossed!

Order of Treatment when Opening - Algae or Iron?

Hi, I'm opening my pool. When I closed the pool I had metal stains on my vinyl pool liner. I understand that to treat the metal stains you need to drop the chlorine level down to zero and then use Vitamin C and Metal Magic. My question is - when I open the pool, do I treat the algae first...

Fixing a leaky outlet from a DE Filter

Hi! The outlet pipe coming out of my DE filter (FNS Plus 60 sq. ft) has a slow leak where indicated in the photos. From the parts diagram it looks like the leak is coming from part numbers 28 or 29 where the pipe meets the filter. I'd like to detach the outlet pipe from the filter housing but...

    Is a return eyeball needed?

Thanks everyone! I think I'll go with the suggestions and keep the eyeball in. Now I have to figure out how to fix the leak... I only have one working retun, so that's our only option.

    Is a return eyeball needed?

Is a return eyeball necessary? My filter pressure is 19 with the eyeball in and 9 with it out. With it in and facing up and toward the shallow end, the surface of the pool water moves and is rippling. Without the eyeball the top of the water is close to stagnant. I've used a return eyeball...

Should I reorder a whole new test kit?

Thanks mknauss! I stored the test kit in my basement, which is heated. I don't think the temperature ever dropped below 60 degrees in the area where it was stored during the winter. I used the test kit today and the results seemed to be accurate. I'll follow your advice and keep an eye on it...

Thanks for the info Catanzaro! That's great news that I can use the reagents for two seasons. I'll reorder them next season.

Should I reorder a whole new test kit?

Hello! I used a K-2006 FAS-DPD test kit for the first time last year. I got the kit out again to use it this year and noticed that although I have plenty of solutions/reagents left, the expiration dates on all the bottles seem to be 3/18 or 4/18 (1 or 2 months ago). Should I: (A) Just keep...

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

Last night's readings at 11:30PM: FC: 12 CYA: 30 Tried OCLT, FC is 11 at 8AM. FC dropped 1 ppm overnight. Filter pressure is ticking up slightly at 22psi. My FC dropped from 21.5 to 12 during the day (down 9.5).

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

DAY 12 of SLAM FC was 22 last night at around 11:30PM. Water was clear and not much to vacuum. I can see clearly to the bottom of the pool! :D I thought I'd try OCLT, so I didn't add any more chlorine. I checked again at 6:30AM and FC was 21.5. We may have passed OCLT on the first try! It...

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

Week 2 of SLAM - still maintaining above a FC of 24. I lose about 4 FC overnight. Water is pretty clear and filter pressure has stabilized for 2 days at 21 psi. I add 2 gallons of chlorine per day - 1 in the AM, 1 in the PM.

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

Yes CYA was 60 when I started, but I've been vaccuming to waste and backwashing a good amount of water and replacing the water. I haven't tested CYA since the beginning of the SLAM. Is now a good time to test again? Or should I just wait until I get through the SLAM?

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

I'm a tiny bit afraid I've bleached my liner...but it could just be the cloudiness. It was a darker blue. Is it possible to bleach the liner with FC 24?

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

Day 7 We've had a breakthrough! We've changed from green water to cloudy blue! Although it's still very cloudy, I can almost see the bottom of the pool in the shallow end. I deep cleaned my DE filter yesterday. Prior to cleaning, the filter pressure was raising from 22 psi to 30 psi within...

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

Thank you to you (and your friend)! :D Sorry I am completely clueless with all of this. I'm learning so much here, I've been on this forum non-stop for days. Thank you Texas for helping out! FC was 22 at 5:30PM, much bigger drop off than yesterday (I'm assuming because today was a sunny...

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

Separate question - but I was instructed by an admin to keep all questions in this one thread: My pool has two pairs of skimmers/returns but only one pair works. Years ago we had someone come out and test the pressure on both lines and there was no pressure on one of them. The guy told us it...

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

OK thank you Richard and Tim! I think the only option is vacuuming to waste and adding new water (and diluting the chlorine level). If I recharge the filter with cellulose fiber, that only buys me an hour before the pressure raises 10psi and I have to backwash/recharge it again. I can't...

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

Added 1 gallon of 10% at 10AM. 7:50PM FC is 28.5. Hoping for some improvement in Day 4. I tried running the filter for an hour around 3PM, backwashed and recharged it with cellulose fiber. In the hour the pressure went from 20 to 30. Backwashed again and switched back to recirculate around...

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

Day 3 9:30AM FC is 25. Lost about 4 over the last 11 hours, seems better than Day 1. Thinking about adding 1 gallon of 10% to cover me while I'm at work. I have been running the filter on recirculate for the first 3 days. There was a slight improvement in color from a dark green to a...

SLAMing with a DE filter - when/how often to backwash and clean filter grids?

Re: 0 FC in the AM? Thank you Tim for this advice! I ran out of the R-0871 FAS-DPD Titrating Reagent, just 48 hours after starting the SLAM process. I would be out of luck tomorrow if I didn't re-order. Thanks for the help!

OK, took a second reading today, 1 hour after adding the 2 gallons of 10% chlorine. 8:40 AM is FC 25. I'll keep checking throughout the day. I think I'm going to wind up buying all of the bleach/chlorinating liquid from all of the Walmart stores in the area. :) Though I am running my filter...

Re: 0 FC in the AM? Thanks Tim, I reordered those. I didn't realize how many drops I would need. First readings were: CYA: 60 FC: 0 According to the chart, FC target should be 24. I started the SLAM process tonight. I added 6 gallons of 10% liquid chlorine. I waited 1 hour and got an...
