Seeking a recommendation on a list of pool cleaners

Hi, I've had the Pentair Warrior SE (now called the 920) for 2 years and it does the trick for my in ground. It's one of the lower-priced models that has all the basic bells and whistles you need: climbs and scrubs walls, swivel cable (not as anti tangle as it advertises, but never a big...

Smart Wifi Pool Timer with Fireman's Switch?

Ah, I never thought of that-- I was always thinking in terms of a hard off/on function. Definitely more complicated than I had imagined.

Smart Wifi Pool Timer with Fireman's Switch?

Yes, I was thinking about using a separate Surailec wifi timer could control the on/off of the heater, but the routine was set to act like a fireman's switch: "Controller A: Turn off heater. Wait 20 minutes. Controller B: Turn off pump." Any adjustments to temperature etc would still need...

Smart Wifi Pool Timer with Fireman's Switch?

Got it, that totally makes sense. There's no virtual fireman's switch because your routine has the sequence of events and wait times built into it. So in theory, I could use two separate Surailec wifi timers hooked up to the heater and pump respectively, and create a routine to trigger them in...

Smart Wifi Pool Timer with Fireman's Switch?

Thanks for that wealth of information. I read your "Low Budget DIY Automation" post, and understood some of it (hardware is not my strongest point, I'm more software-oriented). How does your Sonoff TH16 communicate/coordinate with your pump controller? Is it a "IFTT"-type command via Alexa to...

Smart Wifi Pool Timer with Fireman's Switch?

Happy summer pool season, everyone! Just opened my pool with a quick SLAM and was looking to upgrade my setup. Does a 220V "Smart" Wifi pool timer with a Fireman's switch for the heater exist? One that can be synced/programmed via Google Home, for example. Thanks for any leads!

    Frozen Pool at the coping

+1 on this. Also my first winter with a pool, also in Ontario, and the weather has been wild. Lots of snow, freezing weather, followed by a warm spell and rain, soon to be followed with another 10CM of snow tonight and more freezing weather overnight. Been diligent about removing as much snow...

Where to aim the return jets?

Awesome thanks! I'll also try the pingpong ball test as other threads have suggested.

Where to aim the return jets?

When you say the eyeballs should be pointed down, do you mean towards the floor or "straight ahead" but down enough just so they don't break the surface?

    Pool Pump Timer recommendations?

I think what you have is similar to what I linked to, the only difference would be the rectangular trip on the lower right that cuts power from the heater before the pump turns off.

Where to aim the return jets?

Hi all, yes it's another "Where to aim the jets?" thread. I've got a kidney shaped pool with only two return jets. I've been doing some trial-and-error with creating a vortex but I always seems to get dead spots where either the debris doesn't move (ie the far left, the far right, and the...

    Pool Pump Timer recommendations?

Hi All, Thinking about installing a timer with a fireman's switch. Are there any recommended models that are simple and fuss-free? Digital would be good, but analog is fine if it's the simplest. My heater is a Raypak 266-series-- do these newer heaters need an external fireman's switch? The...

    Hayward or Jandy Sand Filter?

I understand there's a certain kind of sand that's 12 microns-- which is essentially the same effectiveness as a cartridge filter? (VS standard 30 micron sand)

    Hayward or Jandy Sand Filter?

That would explain why it's harder to find Jandy parts vs Hayward, which seem to be everywhere. I've never considered a cartridge filter, actually. I always thought sand the lowest maintenance-- backwash, rinse and we're good. Nothing to swap out, and if I read the forums correctly sand...

    Hayward or Jandy Sand Filter?

Looking to replace a very old Hayward sand + filter/multivalve-- I've been offered a choice between a Jandy and a Hayward. From an operational or quality standpoint is there a difference between the two brands? I've noticed that around here Hayward parts are easier to come by, but if a Jandy...

    Hypothetical chlorination question

First I'd like to thank this site and the forum for teaching me the TFP method. I've got the method down to 4 hours of running the pump and about <$1 of chlorine per day (Cdn prices) for crystal clear water. CYA is not perfect thanks to a very rainy summer but I'm working on that. Here's a...

Sight glass still leaking in filter mode -- but spider gasket is brand new

I should add-- after replacing the spider gasket I did a week long SLAM with the filter running 24/7 without any leak. The leak started again after doing backwash/rinse after the SLAM was complete. Is a "clean" filter more prone to leaking? Thanks!

Sight glass still leaking in filter mode -- but spider gasket is brand new

Hi everyone, Long story short, I have a Hayward SP711 sand filter, and in filter mode the sight glass was filling up with water with a constand drip/leak. Opened up the filter, sure enough the spider gasket was torn. Replaced it, and the leak stopped. One week later after doing a backwash...

Unfortunately no longer available from Canadian retailers. Closest model I can find here is the Pool Master Catfish.

Recommendations for cordless pool vacuums for quick touch ups?

Hi everyone, Any recommendations for a cordless vacuum that can handle spot cleaning in a 8' in ground? I'm currently using a Warrior SE for my daily vacuuming, but there are times there's a bit of settled silt at the bottom of the pool and I'm too lazy to set up the entire unit again in hopes...

TA and PH with a bit of CYA

    Noted, and thanks!

TA and PH with a bit of CYA

Thanks everyone! Is it ok to leave it floating around even without the pump turned on? I turn the pump on overnight, and read somewhere that a puck left in a floater without circulation could cause chlorine to build up in one spot and 'damage the pool'.

TA and PH with a bit of CYA

Hi, Just passed my first SLAM 2 days ago, and am now doing adjustments for PH and TA. My readings are: FC : 5.5 CC : 0 PH : 7.4 TA : 110 CYA : <30 (dot still visible at 30, and visible when tube is filled to the top) With my PH is acceptable, should I be worried about the high TA at this...

    Newbie SLAM questions

After the rain the tests were-- FC : 9.5 CC: 0.5 Here's an interesting wrinkle: the CYA dropped to under 30 (could still see the black dot oh so faintly at 30) I'm going to do a SLAM based on a CYA of 30 (roughly 2 litres), but should I look at raising my CYA back to 30/40 at this point? And...

    Newbie SLAM questions

Last night-- 2 hours after the last chlorine drop: FC: 15.5 CC: 0.5 This morning at 6 AM: FC: 13 (down 2.5 from last night) CC: 0.5 Water was absolutely crystal clear. 6AM wasn't quite early enough as the sun was already rising, so not sure if the FC went down because of UV or because of...

    Newbie SLAM questions

I'll answer my own question: Will do a final test in about 2 hours, and then again before sunrise. If there's a 1ppm loss or less, the water is clear, and my CC is 0.5 or lower-- the SLAM is complete!. Then it's time to check and balance PH.

    Newbie SLAM questions

Did a test 6.5 hours after my last chlorine drop: FC : 9 CC : 0.5 Adding another +5 L of chlorine as per pool math -- should I do a last test in 2 hours tonight and then see if it passes the OCLT tomorrow morning regardless of the final FC #, or OCLT ONLY if it hits the target SLAM FC (16)...
