    Our Pool Rehab Costs

I remember when I first started looking, I was very interested in the average cost to replaster a pool. I just finished signing the paperwork for my rehab and wanted to come and give some info for anyone interested. Pool is 26 years old and has never been replastered to the best of my knowledge...

    Water from spa draining

Hmmm, my dad said they redid some of the piping when they installed the new pump. Is there a place where I could install one or would I have to have someone run a new line?

    Water from spa draining

Here’s the setup. Is it as simple as taking the front of the valve off and replacing with a new one?

    Water from spa draining

In the ongoing saga of my parent’s pool. They had their pump replaced about a year ago and sometime in the last few months, whenever they turn off their pump, about half of the spa water drains into the pool. Then when they turn the pump back on, the spa fills back up. I’m here for the weekend...

    Pressure side leak

Is there a chance they could be leaking at the actual return jet, or is it most likely in the pipe underground?
  8. P

    Pressure side leak

It’s my parent’s pool, which was built in the 60s. It’s all under concrete/cool decking, so we definitely can’t see any wetness. I’m almost certain there is only one return line, although they have 6 return jets in the pool and a couple in the spa. They are going to call a leak detection...

    Pressure side leak

If the pool is only losing water when the pump is on (and a significant amount at that), it would indicate a pressure side leak, correct? If there is no visible water over near the equipment pad, does that mean the leak would have to be in the pipe below the surface?

    Help figuring this out...

I should add that the place they plug their suction vacuum in is inside the skimmer on the side wall.

    Help figuring this out...

This is a photo of my parent’s pool equipment. Not shown is the heater to the right. Can anyone tell from this photo if they have two lines (one for the main drain and one for the skimmer)? They’re trying to chase down a leak and my plan is to plug up the hole at the bottom is the skimmer but I...

    Finding an AG leak

Do they sell plugs for the return jets? Is there a way to plug the skimmer?

    Finding an AG leak

Shoot, sorry. I meant I think the leak is above ground (as in, not in the pipes below the ground) LOL. It’s a regular old gunite pool That has been replastered a few times along the way.

    Finding an AG leak

My parent’s have had their home and pool since 1976. About a month ago they started seeing a pretty significant loss of water each day (about 2 inches). It’s finally warm enough and I told them I’d jump in an do the dye test to try and find the source of the leak. I know to check around the main...

    Losing 3ppm per day?

Target is 5. Haven’t done an overnight loss, but can tonight. I’ll grab a bag of conditioner powder and raise the CYA up to 50 to see what that does.

    Losing 3ppm per day?

So I’ve been trying to test every day and for the last week it’s been hovering around 90 degrees. It’s looking like our pool is eating through 3ppm of chlorine per day. Our CYA is 40 and I keep the pH between 7.6 and 7.8. I always add the chlorine after dusk. Does this seem high or about...

    Vacation plan?

Hey all! Sorry for my absence! Vacation was wonderful. What we did mostly worked...I had my mom pop around mid way through to add what I calculated to be the “correct” amount of chlorine. We were gone for 12 days and I calculated that out pool ate through about 1.5ppm of chlorine a day so I...

    One inlet or two?

is there a downside to having both the skimmer and main drain lines open?
  20. P

    One inlet or two?

Just to make sure I’m clear, does the main drain pull water in from the circle grate at the bottom of the pool? And when you say 5-10% open, do you mean just shift the valve a little bit so it isn’t closed tightly?
  21. P

    One inlet or two?

I have three inlet valves (skimmer, main drain and cleaner). For as long as we’ve owned the pool we’ve only ever had the “skimmer” valve open. It’s the way it was when we got here and we’ve just never touched it. Question is - is there a good reason to also open the main drain valve? The cleaner...

What next??? So frustrated with these bubbles!

I really appreciate you taking the time to write that. I paid good money for the pump and install and I want it to be done correctly. The biggest problem is that I didn’t know what “correct” meant.

What next??? So frustrated with these bubbles!

If the install looks shotty to you guys, then I’m tempted to have them come out and redo it. The install was $220 and the guy was out there no longer than 30 minutes. Other than saying to them “it doesn’t look right” or “there is a suction side leak”, is there something glaring that is incorrect...

What next??? So frustrated with these bubbles!

Sounds good. I think my first step will be to change the guts on the skimmer valve. If that doesn’t fix it, then I’ll move along to the connections. I don’t have to hose that reaches to the equipment, but I’ve read something about using shaving cream? Thank you again for all of your help!

What next??? So frustrated with these bubbles!

And again, I just want to ask...if the pump basket is full of water, is there any reason to continue to make myself crazy about this?? What’s the worst that can happen?

What next??? So frustrated with these bubbles!

I should add it was Leslie’s who installed. I know, I know, but I didn’t know better back then.

What next??? So frustrated with these bubbles!

So should I have them come back out and fix it? Or try and fix it myself? If it’s silicones, could air still get in?
  28. P

What next??? So frustrated with these bubbles!

That grey piece could be new, not sure. There is also silicone around that fitting, but I suppose air could still be getting in?

What next??? So frustrated with these bubbles!

I will try the water trick but am I sure which connection you are talking about. Is it the grey piece just below the pump basket part?

What next??? So frustrated with these bubbles!

And I misspoke earlier. At 1500rpms, my filter pressure is around 4-5. At 2500, it’s sitting at 10.
