Just completely drained but now no CYA

I have been hanging a sock over the edge of the pool weighted down by a rock and don't have any staining or etching.

Any reason to not leave lights on when pool is (mesh) covered for winter?

But wouldn't that be less likely in the winter with cold water, or ice, rather than 80F. That is assuming that the lights are covered in water, which they are. My pool has a mesh cover. When it is winterized the water is drained below the level of the jets. Over the next few months rain and...

Any reason to not leave lights on when pool is (mesh) covered for winter?

This is what I have: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07BW91ZLQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 My lighting system is called Aqualamp, which I believe is based here in Canada.

Any reason to not leave lights on when pool is (mesh) covered for winter?

My pool has been closed for the season. Last year I started leaving the lights on for the winter - they come on at sunset and stay on until 11:30. I like how this looks through the mesh cover and it is a nice accent to the rest of my landscape lighting in my back yard. Any reason not to leave...

How much will it cost to heat my pool for this weekend?

I forgot to read my meter before heating, but from 4pm on Saturday until today I used 83m^3 of gas. I turned the heater off at around 4 on Monday. So I missed the initial heat up, but to keep the water at 85F for two days I used, at most, 83m^3 of gas. Looking at my bill a little more...

How much will it cost to heat my pool for this weekend?

I did, and we swam Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I did snap a photo of my gas meter on Saturday when the pool was pretty much heated so I don't know the full cost, but I can figure out what it cost to maintain at that temp for a few days.

    Pool Math........The App

There is some discussion on how to do the calculation in this thread: How much will it cost to heat my pool for this weekend?

    Pool Math........The App

Suggestion - add a heating cost calculator. The app already knows your volume of water. You would just need to add the Natural Gas/Propane price and the desired temperature raise. Of course, this is for gas heaters, maybe you could do something similar for other types of heaters.

How much will it cost to heat my pool for this weekend?

But heating for a second day will be much cheaper as you just have to maintain losses. I will heat up for Sunday and Monday as temps will be 20 and 22.

How much will it cost to heat my pool for this weekend?

I am luck that I don't have that many trees nearby that shed debris. I can generally empty my skimmer once per week and I am good. I guess I would be able to turn down my SWCG as I would lose much less chlorine. But I don't typically have to add any chemicals other than that - maybe acid...

How much will it cost to heat my pool for this weekend?

$18,000 buys a ton of natural gas. Then they don't make economic sense for me. My gas bill for June-Sep seems to average around $1000 total for the four month period when I am heating my pool. If I assume 80% of that is for the pool (I have gas water heaters, cooktop and BBQs that would be...

How much will it cost to heat my pool for this weekend?

I had a solar cover on my parents' pool growing up about 40 years ago. But I didn't like two things about the cover (1) it took up space on the deck and was unsightly, and (2) it was difficult to remove unless you had two people so the cover acted as a deterrent to using the pool. When I had my...

How much will it cost to heat my pool for this weekend?

(This is in reply to JoyfulNoise's response)Thanks. 4000 ft^3=113m^3. That will cost me about $13.50, without accounting for additional heat losses. I do not have a solar cover, or other cover other than the winter cover. But that is easily worth it for me. If it cost around $100 then it...

How much will it cost to heat my pool for this weekend?

I live in Toronto. I turned my heater off last weekend. The water temperature is now around 68F. This coming weekend is a long weekend as it is Canadian Thanksgiving and the weather looks good at 20C and higher. I would like to be able to go swimming this weekend. How much will it cost me to...

    Dolphin cleaner cable degradation

When you say "buy a new one" do you mean cable or entire Dolphin unit? I had problems with mine a year or so ago and they replaced the impeller and rubber tracks.

    Dolphin cleaner cable degradation

I have a Dolphin pool cleaner that is about 4 years old. The blue cable is starting to disintegrate - when I handle the cable I get small pieces of plastic coming off onto my hand. My pH ranges between 7.4 and 7.8 and my FC ranges between 4 and 7. My CYA is around 50 and I have a SWCG and a...

    Saltwater Clarity

Agreed, I don't understand why every pool doesn't have an SWCG. It makes your pool almost maintenance fee. All I have to add is some MA few weeks or so. My FC stays pretty steady at 4-5 and my CC is pretty much always 0, maybe the slightest hint of pink when I add the reagent.

    Questions about filters

Can you clean these types of filters with a pressure washer, as long as the pressure is not too high? I have the cleaning device that looks like a comb, but I think a pressure washer would be faster and more effective.

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

But I assume you empty them several times and rinse off before throwing out, do you not? I also saw a suggestion in another thread here to use knee-high nylons which you can get for a cheap price.

Re: How to clean a cartridge filter

I have been using these for a week or so now and the only downside is that I have to empty the skimmer and clean out the sock pretty much every day. I used to be able to get by with emptying the skimmer only once or twice per week. How often do you replacee the socks? So far I am just dumping...

Get a hot tub - where to start is there a sticky for where to begin?

Some people use them and some don't. I have had my spa for about 14 years. Initially it was used a lot. When our kids were younger we kept the water temp around 99 and they used to use it as a "swimming pool". Now it is used left frequently, I use it about 2-3 times per week, and one of my...

Mine is just barely under the deck so that you can still easily see the sky.

Get a hot tub - where to start is there a sticky for where to begin?

You don't mention were you live, but one thing that I did that is useful is that my tub is under my deck (the deck is on the first floor and the tub is by the basement walkout). This protects it from snow - depending on where you live that can be a consideration. You don't want to have to walk...

Do you really need to shock your spa every week or so?

Regarding my CC, when I add the 5 drops of the R-003 reagent the samples will often turn just the slighted shade of pink. This will then be neutralized by 1 drop of the 871 liquid. So this would indicate a CC of 0.2 or lower if using a 25mL sample, or less than 0.5 using a 10mL sample. If I...

Do you really need to shock your spa every week or so?

This seems like a lot of work, and expensive since FAS-DPD powder is more expensive than cocaine in Canada (not that I am aware of the current price of cocaine), and FAS-DPD tests would be required to test at a 10 ppm level. How many tests do you do and how many hours do you keep this up for...

Do you really need to shock your spa every week or so?

I do get the pH back down but it keeps going up. I keep the aeration valves open, so I will close them and only open when in use. The other thing that is weird is that I have to use a lot more MA than what the Pool Math app says. For example - when I have a pH reading of 8.2 it will say to add...

Do you really need to shock your spa every week or so?

I do test every few days with my FAS-DPD test and I am generally around 3-4 FC and 0 CC. My water also seems much clearer with less foaming since I switched from bromine to SWCG. I rarely have trouble with FC but I am in a constant see-saw between pH and TA as my pH gets high, so I add MA...
