    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Good to know. I chose 1# based on PoolMath's recommendation to get me from 30 to 40, but I guess if it was a bit lower than 30 + water added + what you said here, then it starts to make more sense. Question: @cowboycasey said I might have lost 3ppm over a few days. I need to understand what...

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Good to know. Today I was in bright outdoor light, very sunny, back to the sun, facing north. If the light was making it more opaque, I've got nuthin!

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Ok....I added about 1# of dry CYA this weekend. In the 24 hours I waited before retesting, I added some water to replace a couple of inches lost to evaporation since the initial fill. Today my CYA levels are DOWN from where they were last time I tested. We're actually below 30 now (I can still...

    Bug in PoolMath?

Thanks for the update! I'll keep an eye on it and see if I can identify a pattern.

    Bug in PoolMath?

Not sure if this is the right place for posting a bug report, but someone can move me if needed. I've noticed that when I tell PoolMath to log the "suggested amount" of chlorine, it logs -1 gallon. I've had this happen twice in the past week or so, and had to manually correct it. I'm afraid I...

chlorinating options with a potential shortage

A little late here, but.....I've not heard anything about a shortage of LC. The problem is with dry chlorine, because one of the two plants in the US burned down. In California, I haven't had any trouble at all getting LC. It's everywhere. Even the pool store said I can buy as much as I want...

I just became "that lady" at the pool store...

Not to mention the current dry chlorine shortage. Oh wait.... 🤑

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Oh! The "fading endpoint" might apply to my CH test. I'll read that carefully and test again.

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Thanks, you guys. This does help. I gather I can stop counting drops when the color change happens and another drop doesn't change it any further? (I read that somewhere, just want to make sure it was good advice!)

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

OK more questions! I learned my colors from Crayola, so I need a lesson in pool chemistry color matching... I am not sure I'm getting my TA and CH right because I'm confused about the colors. 1) On the TA test, the water is supposed to change from blue to red. Is this red? I would probably call...

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Ok, my pH today is up to 8.0 (first time I've checked it since SLAM) and FC is down to 4.0 (sunshine!) which is in the normal range but I need to boost it up while I work on the BA. (Logs are shared.) If I understand correctly, keeping the FC high also tends to raise the pH, so that's why we...

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Yes, I've read the article. Right now I have FC at around 9 (CYA 30 - to save $ on LC for now) and plan on keeping it about there while I continue to work on the BA. CSI is currently calculated at -0.6 according to PoolMath, but I haven't been monitoring pH or TA since I started the SLAM so I...

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Well, folks, IT IS DONE!!! :whoot: We passed the OCLT test this morning with a 0.5 loss. I actually think it would have passed a few days ago, but I was working so hard on keeping the FC elevated while scrubbing the BA that I didn't really think about it. The filter never got above 16 PSI, but...

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Haha, sorry I meant to correct "bottom feeder" before hitting send. I am referring to my pool cleaner, which is the type that crawls along the bottom of the pool and sucks up crud into a bag (Polaris). We used to have the kind that drives around on the top of the water with a float behind it and...

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Hi all, things are going along "swimmingly"! The water is gorgeous and the black algae is at least 50% better. It was THICK so it's taking a lot of time and muscle power, but I have a few spots where I can see the actual pool color underneath it! The rest is mostly gray-green now, but there are...

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Ah...thanks @Katodude - I had remembered wrong. 30=12 (not 10). Mine is right at 30. It's been pretty easy to keep FC around 11-13, so I think I'm doing pretty good there. And it sounds like I'm good to start brushing that black crud. Onward and upward!

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Ok! I've got my CYA to 30 (and I know that could be a little higher, esp for hot weather, but we're in the 70s this week) My FC only went from 13.5 yesterday afternoon to 11.5 this morning. That was not an official OTCL test, but it tells me things are more stable than they were at first...

I just became "that lady" at the pool store...

Oh, I had not seen the store before. Cool! And I think that "no pucks" slogan would also make a great button or t-shirt to wear to the PS ;-) Oh yeah....at the pool store, when I said I had just drained and refilled due to high CYA, the clerk told me (and the other customer) that draining and...

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Aha....the light is slowly dawning. Thanks @DeanP66. Yes, it's going to get quite hot here in the summer. We do get a reasonable amount of shade on the pool because of all the trees, but you're totally right....we're not even close to "normal" temps yet. I am CYA-shy right now because of how bad...

Wow, thanks for the tip on biz cards!! Again...you've all "been there" and know exactly what we need. Hey, I guess it's time to change my profile pic from the adorable ducks who are partly responsible for my lake water, and instead make it the lovely BLUE pool I am now gazing at out my office...

    Replacing water...confuzzled!

Ok, I might be a little off base in continuing this thread here, since I am not longer confuzzled about replacing water :) (if someone can share the rules about starting a new thread, that would be awesome...one of my posts was moved back to this thread, so I'm still here ;-) ). But.....since...

I just became "that lady" at the pool store...

Hi new friends. I joined up about a week ago and I've gotten TONS of help, so I guess it's about time I introduce myself. We are empty-nesters with four kids out on their own. We got bored during the pandemic and decided to look for a different house. We were mainly looking for something...
