Calcium Chloride - How Much Can I Add

Yep, I never could get any reading whatsoever with my Taylor test kit, so decided to check with the City, and sure enough, their most recent annual water quality report showed a calcium level of 3.49 PPM. To look at it on the bright side, at least we don't have to worry about kidney stones...

Calcium Chloride - How Much Can I Add

Our city water has less than four (4) ppm of calcium out of the tap, so anytime you backwash or vacuum to waste, out comes the bucket of calcium chloride (it also has a TA of 320, but that's a headache for another thread).

Calcium Chloride - How Much Can I Add

According to PoolMath, I need to add in 12 pounds (pool is 10,000 gallons). I realize that my original question was worded rather vaguely, as my concern was in regards to there being a limit as to how many pounds of CH one can add to a pool in a given application.

    Pool Measuring Caps/Cups

I was wondering, do anyone have a source for the old combination measuring cup/bottle caps, like the ones HTH used use for their chemicals? Outside of the 5 lb Refresh chlorine bottles (see below), I don't know of anyone else that still uses them. The reason I ask is that I had several of them...

How are my fellow Texans doing this morning lol

Hope everyone is doing well. The power distribution situation as it's stands, is quite disturbing. Kinda weird that a state like Texas, with all its oil and gas production, would have an issue with the shortage of energy. As for the pool, it appears to be okay, although the surface has frozen...

    Valves Open?

No water features, so I guess I'm okay then. No tarp, though (almost impossible to find around here now).

    Valves Open?

Sorry, for the constant questions (I get confused easily), but was just curious by what everyone means by "turning the valves open." As before, earlier in the fall, I drained both the pump and filter, and assumed that was all I needed to do. However, I have seen some asking if I have opened up...

    Antifreeze in Skimmer

Also, should we poke a small in the cap of the bottle to allow air to escape to aid in collapsing?

    Antifreeze in Skimmer

Yeah. I had already pulled the plugs on the pump and filter back in November to save wear and tear on the system (it's over twenty year old). I thought about getting it up and running again, but mknauss said to leave it be. We've never had any problem not running it in the past during freezes...

    Antifreeze in Skimmer

Any tips for us crazy Texans? Do we just put an full, unopened jug of RV Antifreeze in the skimmer basket, or do we partially empty it to give to give it more crushability?

Extended freeze with possible ice storm expected in Houston

I was thinking about doing that, but as there's going to be freezing rain, but I was worried about the weight of water-soaked blankets potentially damaging unsupported portions of the above-ground piping.

Single Digits In Central Texas Next Week

Thanks. We're just about at the upper limit of the 5" line.

Single Digits In Central Texas Next Week

By valves, do you mean the red-handled valves on the mains at ground level, or the multiport? As for the red turn valves, I haven't touched them, and they are in the same position as when the pool runs. Anyway, the pad is up against the backyard fence, and blocked from the north wind by the...

Single Digits In Central Texas Next Week

Going to get down in the single digits here in Central Texas next week and I'm concerned. We've had extended periods in the 20's (even upper teens) before with no problems (even without draining the equipment on the pad), but I'm concerned now. Earlier in the fall, I drained the filter and...

Adding too much CH Increaser to a pool at one time

I recently did a major water refresh on my pool, and as our water has zero calcium in it, I wanted to get it up the CH levels back up as quickly as possible, so I proceeded to add a 15 lb tub of calcium chloride to it. Since doing that, however, I have read that one should not add more than 10...

Damage due to too much Muriatic Acid?

Had a major kerfuffle this morning, when a family member, mistaking a gallon of Muriatic Acid for a gallon of Chlorine, added the entirety of the former to our pool. I walked out about fifteen or so minutes after it occurred, and wandered why an empty bottle of Muriatic Acid was sitting on the...

    DE on pool surface

Beginning to wonder now if I may have a calcium buildup issue. We have absolutely no calcium in our water, so when even doing a partial water change several pounds of calcium are needed. I'm now wondering if I might have added too much calcium too quickly after a recent major water change, and...

    DE on pool surface

That's what I was thinking as well, but as my family's been giving me a lot of grief lately about not being able to swim, I thought I'd run down every angle. Whatever this stuff is, it doesn't seem to want to catch in the grids (either that, or its replenishing itself every day from wherever...

    DE on pool surface

Have a large of amount of what appears to be DE, not only in the bottom of the pool, but floating on the surface as well. In fact, when you stick your hand in the pool you immediately encounter a gritty feel as if you stuck your hand into a box of sand (my first thought was that a part of the...

    R-0870 powder

Just pulled out my backup .25lb container of R-0870, only to find that the snap top had come loose over winter, and while still ash gray in color, the entire contents of it had solidified into a solid brick due to the exposure to moisture. Is it still usable at this point, or once it has...

    Calcium Chloride Issue

My apologies, but as usual, a dumb question for members of the forum. I was adding some Calcium Chloride to our pool today, and was worried that I may have gotten some up of it sucked into the skimmer before it was fully dissolved/dissipated. I was using the method of pouring it into an old...

    Outdoor Bleach

Was in a hurry this morning, and not thinking, grabbed the wrong bottle and poured about 36 ounces of outdoor bleach in my 10,000 gallon pool:mad: I was wondering, besides the hassle of having everything foam up, is there else in there that would prohibit anyone from swimming? And if so, for...

Unable to remove motor from Hayward Northstar

I've been having issues with a suction side air leak with my Northstar SP4007X, and it was suggested that I check the impeller to see if it was clogged or the seals need replacing. I dutifully checked the various videos and guides on how to do this, and it looked easy enough, even for someone as...

    SLAM levels dangerous to wildlife?

I need to slam our pool to get rid of some stubborn algae, but was worried about the effects of high levels of chlorine on the local wildlife. We have a number of squirrels, possums and other critters which regularly drop by in the 100 degree heat to take a drink, and I was worried about any...
