CYA granules or Tri-Chlor tabs... Which is more economical for raising CYA?

The best prices i've seen for both are about $2 per pound. Since the beginning of last season i've gone through 20 pounds of cya, way more than i expected. makes me think trichlor tablets may not be a problem for me...

What is your salt level? NON-SWG pools only. Yes i know this sounds nuts.

well, that didn't pan out very well. responses were "very little" "shouldn't be any" and similar. Call out to any other SWG users who happened to measure their salt levels before adding salt.

What is your salt level? NON-SWG pools only. Yes i know this sounds nuts.

Thanks, guys, that helps a lot. anyone else? and your responses gave me the idea of talking to PB's about salt levels prior to installation of SWG. now why didn't i think of that. thanks.

What is your salt level? NON-SWG pools only. Yes i know this sounds nuts.

This is related to my previous topic here: what is typical salt level of NON SWG pool? I am asking anyone that has a chlorine based pool that does NOT use SWG to post their salt levels. Now, I realize that if you dont have a SWG, you probably dont have a salt test kit. duh. I also realize that...

what is typical salt level of NON SWG pool?

mostly anecdotal. my own pool deck was sealed w/acrylic and lasted for about 3yrs. then i converted to chlorine, then added more salt, not realizing how much salt i had already added during conversion. so i ended up with swg level salt. recoating after that lasted less than 3 months. [there's...

what is typical salt level of NON SWG pool?

Can anyone give me a range of salt levels in pools that use regular chlorine bleach or tablets for sanitizing? Apparently the level of salt in SWG maintained pools are so high that acrylic decorative concrete sealers do not hold up when used on surrounding pool decks, but salt levels in regular...

Why so much dislike for Flocculent?

non responsive to your question, but man, i think i would rather see a green swamp than that ugly brown. even if i did know it was only dirt. good job cleaning it up.

Did ammonia eat my cya over the winter then evaporate?

Interesting. I'm not that far from you, but think about it. If dilution is the only reason for the cya drop, wouldn't you also expect salt and calcium to show massive losses? How much lower were those? My salt level was about the same, maybe 10% lower, but i think that is easily within test...

Did ammonia eat my cya over the winter then evaporate?

i've looked over some old threads about ammonia and that has me pondering this question. First some background: i have a mesh cover that lets in sunlight, dirt, etc. Normally upon opening i find a lot of silt and earthworms. this is my first opening after converting to chlorine. i found NO...

Unable to get pH where it should be

huh. i always thought a higher TA would create more of a buffer to minimize swings in pH.

    Calculating PPM by hand

Mike has hit on part of the issue. Try putting in 10% bleach and you get 256 oz., about 10 times your calculated value for 100% bleach. using 1% bleach gives 2616. not exactly linear, but in the ball park. note the changes in calculated ozs of bleach as you increase the bleach conc from 50 to 60...

    Salt in a non-SWG pool

So i was thinking about adding some salt to get a better feel to the water and less irritation to the eyes. Before adding salt i took a water sample to Leslie's for a starting level. I was expecting about 1000 ppm, just a guess. They tested 2000. The first test i think was a conductivity...

Possible calcium scaling on pool vinyl liner - how do I remove this?

i had similar stuff this season. just keep brushing. a little more comes off each time with extended exposure to chlorine. at least mine did. good luck.

    Antifreeze and Chlorine

Now i am wondering if my excess FC daily loss is due to antifreeze instead of mold or whatever in the pipelines. I normally have the multiport valve in the waste position when i start up the pump at pool opening, so most of it should not have made it into the pool, plus the lines should have...

    PH and TA Question

not sure what kind of return jet fitting you have, but you can easily make a fountain. search this site for aeration. i made one for similar reason: my TA is too high to add more pH increasers. my pH is slowly rising from aeration but it does take a while.

    FC loss versus CYA level

I agree the half-life chart makes more sense in the apparent benefit of CYA in helping minimize FC loss (vs the loss rate chart), and also wondering how the low CYA data were obtained. Not enough to want to run the experiment though!

Remove mold (or ?) in skimmer/return lines

Thanks, Leebo, I was concerned about damaging equipment. I will try Mustard level when i see several days of cool, cloudy weather coming. I cannot hold FC on sunny days, way too much chlorine required. You did answer my question.

Remove mold (or ?) in skimmer/return lines

That gives me the average level in the pool, not what i can add safely to the skimmer. When dosing to shock level, chlorine is added in front of the return jets to rapidly dilute it. I want concentrate inside the pipes.

Remove mold (or ?) in skimmer/return lines

OCLT 5 and 6 means that my loss overnight was 5 to 6 ppm. I get FC around 2 when i test in the morning; by evening it is zero. I have been targeting FC of around 6 when i add chlorine at night, so when i get FC 2 in the morning, that equates to a loss (what i referred to as OCLT loss) of about...

Remove mold (or ?) in skimmer/return lines

most recent OCLT 5 and 6 ppm. other recent results: FC 2 in am, 0 late afternoon. add chlorine in evening to obtain 6 ppm (and yes i know this would equal oclt of 4, but my oclt of 5 and 6 are from shock levels) CC from zero to less than 1. TA about 150 pH 7.5 (just successful in raising it by...

Remove mold (or ?) in skimmer/return lines

I am convinced the baqua conversion is complete. in my opinion, the reason i cannot pass the OCLT is due to stubborn, residual mold (or?) that does not consist of biguanide. and since i have cleaned as much as i can access, the next place to get is in the pipes. jmo of course. So in order to...

Remove mold (or ?) in skimmer/return lines

I think i have something in my lines that is eating FC. I have cleaned the light niche, step screw cover panels, ladder, and still having difficulty maintaining FC. CC is around 0.5. When i was using Baquacil I cleaned them using LineClean as mentioned in this old thread: Baquacil Cloudy...
