First time winterizing - Above ground doughboy - Skimmer question

It's my 1st winter so I'm not the expert on that. The ice and snow on the cover Should be floating on the water underneath I assume. As long as there is slack on the edge of the cover and it's not pulling on it, I would think It would be okay .

I am still a couple of months away from good weather here but when I get to that point I will post some pictures so I can close the loop on this thread.

    Skimmer Outlet Modification?

Thank you cowboycasey. The 1.5" would require a smaller hole, but might cause some restriction. I'm not sure... I cant find the same thing in 2".

    Skimmer Outlet Modification?

I absolutely will. I'm not sure if I will do it because I didn't want to be the first. My major concern would be weakening the skimmer body because it requires a 3-inch hole to install a 2in bulkhead. I was hoping someone else may have some insight or done it...

    Skimmer Outlet Modification?

Hello, I have a Doughboy pool with the proprietary Doughboy skimmer. I like the skimmer because it is very big and has a very big basket. I replaced all the hoses last year with 1 1/2 in. PVC pipe. I plan to increase the size of pipe to 2 in. this year. The problem with the Doughboy skimmer is...

That got me thinking because I haven't seen an electric bill at least a paper one in years. I just logged in and did the math adding up the generation and the distribution. I'm at .08389/kwh.

I guess we are back to at least installing a few feet of 2" so I can put the flow meter in so we have some numbers to work with. I'm now curious about the temperature in and the temperature out but have no idea how one would go about measuring that. I assume the digital readout on the HP is the...

@ajw22 I used the Raypak calculator using the same selections as you did, except I added solar cover at night and used our rate for electric. It comes up at $467.00/season

First time winterizing - Above ground doughboy - Skimmer question

I'm a little late to your post, but maybe helpful for next year. I have a 27' Doughboy with their large skimmer. I bought a special skimmer plug that fits this skimmer from the pool folks. It has foam that sort of expands after it is pushed in. It dripped constantly. I got a second one that did...

Hey Allen, I agree with you on installing his flow meter this spring. Here is some info from the manual. Our electricity is .06/kwh BrandGulfstream Heater Type: Heat Only Performance kW Input: 5.5 BTU Output, Standard Rating Conditions 80/80/80 : 122,000 BTU COP, Standard Rating Conditions...

It has not. It was purchased new and installed last spring. I don't know if it functions like an air conditioner that is low on refrigerant, but it does not freeze up like an AC would do. April through October. July and August was lower. Probably 200.00 those months. Electricity is .06/KWH The...

Sounds good to me!! The filter is a Hayward cartridge filter. 175 square feet of filter area, designed flow rate is 120 GPM. So back to the original problem. The HP will randomly shut down and report an error code that reveals "low flow", and high heat inside of the exchanger. Keep in mind, the...

@ajw22 I just read this article you posted. Do Different PVC Fittings Really Make a Difference in Water Flow? - POND Trade Magazine A nice easy read. With all the input to my question, I think I will increase the 1.5" PVC to 2" PVC using long sweeps. I'm just left with one question.... Will the...

So now that we know we are looking at 70 GPM or even lower, (30 to 70) I could probably live with shooting for 50 GPM. With that said, does it really make sense to up the 1.5" PVC to 2" PVC when I'm still going to be limited by the 1.5" filter connection and the 1.5" return port with the 3/4"...

I found this deep in the manual. Why they have 90 GPM on the cover is an unknown... "Rigid PVC piping is recommended, and all joints secured with PVC glue. Installation MUST conform to all local codes. Make sure water-flow is correct (30-70 GPM). Again, try to keep piping away from areas...

They are a pretty good Company. They gave it to me to install permanently. I'm not sure how long of a piece of 2" pipe I would need to get an accurate reading. I'll probably start with that to see how close I am to 90 GPM. I'm sure I'm way below 90 since I can only get 45 through 1.5" pipe.

Thanks! I'll check out the article on bypass. I think my other limitation (maybe insignificant) is that the filter is only 1.5" NPT. I'm going to have a slight restriction there unless I buy a new filter. (this one is only 2 years old).

I don't recall the brand. I put it in with the plumbing stuff in winter storage. I guess I could either put in a section of 2" to install the meter or just buy one that fits 1.5".

Adding a return seems like a good idea, but might not be the easiest thing to do with a completely installed and functioning above ground pool. Cutting the hole with a liner installed seems tricky.

The HP needs 30 GPM or it will shut off. They recommend running it on high speed. I've run it on low speed and high speed just to experiment. It doesn't shut off on low speed, but "seems" to heat faster on high speed. GPM requirement is 90. What was happening was a low flow error but the code...

    Above Ground Pool Plumbing Size

Thank you for your interest in my post. Last fall I had an issue with a flow error on the new HP. I contacted them and a very helpful engineer called me back. He is leaning towards the reducing of the 2" ports to 1.5" and the 1.5" plumbing may be causing the error. At the very least, he said the...

Hello everyone- I've searched for a good answer for this but have yet to find one. I have a 2 year old Doughboy 27' round pool, 54" high. It came with the standard "crappy" vacuum cleaner style 1.5" hoses. I replaced them all with 1.5" PVC pipe the first year. I added a Gulf Stream heat pump...
