Can't figure out why pool is cloudy

He does not have a test kit nor interested in using one - he relies on the pool store. I just thought I'd test once with my kit to see if anything major was off.

Can't figure out why pool is cloudy

I have had no issues with my pool in so long, I've forgotten a lot of things I've learned here. But a neighbor has been pouring lots of money into his pool with no luck clearing up the cloudy water. It is a 7 foot deep pool, and is not terrible, but definitely can't clearly see the drains at...

Solar panels not draining when pump is running

I was thinking of adding a second valve on the return so that when solar is shut off, the panels are removed from seeing any pump pressure and then dumping the solar water back into the pool - but it would require the addition of another return line, or I could use the vac line except for that...

Solar panels not draining when pump is running

I have the temperature set for 86 and what typically happens is the pool cools overnight, the pump comes on about 11 am and the controller diverts the water to the panels. Sometime later in the afternoon the temperature reaches the set point and the valve is turned so no water can go up to the...

Seeing white flakes (calcium?) in pool after 10 years of never having them.

All chemical levels have been the same. The SWG cell was replaced 2 years ago. I only started seeing these white flakes after adjusting the TA. My numbers were: Salt = 3600 Chlorine = 5 PH = 7.8 CH = 330 TA = 20 So I added enough baking soda to get TA to 60. Then added about 1/4 gallon of...

    Hitec Helicoil panel leak

Friends just bought a home that has 10 year old Hitec Helicoil panels installed. The panels are 4 foot x 10 foot and there are about 10 on the roof. All 5 bottom panels have leaks at the lower part where the tubes connect to the header. This is where the pressure is highest and their system...

    Reducing overall pressure

Filter pressure, solar bypass ~ 10 psi Filter pressure, solar 100% ~ 18 psi I have the solar valve set so filter pressure reads 14 psi, so some portion is bypassed. From what the manufacturer has told me, pressure is very important. I also think the cycling of panels, on and off, causing them...

    Reducing overall pressure

OK. Panels are Solar Bear, about 15 ft average above the pump on the roof. Very close to the pump, so minimal pipe run. Yes, I have recently installed a solar valve with the check valve built in, so the panels drain properly. If you don't think pressure is important in the life of the panel...

    Reducing overall pressure

I have measured 4-5 psi up at the panels at the lower header. Talking to a rep at the company, I was told the lower the pressure, the longer life I can expect. But back to the question.... will a return loop lower pressure enough to make it worth plumbing?

    Reducing overall pressure

The lower the pressure, the longer my solar panels will live.

    Reducing overall pressure

Other than changing to a variable or 2 speed pump, what are some ways to lower the pressure on my system? I had two ideas. 1. Use larger openings for the returns. 2. A return loop from the output to the input of the pump with a valve - although I'm not sure how much that would actually...

    High pressure in solar panels

Thanks mas985. You would not believe it, but I was an IT guy once - but that was back when Fortran ruled.

    High pressure in solar panels

This is the best I can do. I used to have no problem inserting images, but now it says they are all too large even if they are 200k. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eaoho6RYS0M/VwwN3XadvRI/AAAAAAABaE0/wSf-pmJhP9M2QyjFf_rbqBeLZBpNeaUCwCCo/s800-Ic42/valve.jpg

    High pressure in solar panels

If you look back at my photo, you will see a small valve T-d into the solar panel input line. Not shown is a similar setup above the return checkvalve. If I use the washing machine hose to connect the two, would that work? Thanks

    High pressure in solar panels

Those Pentair solar valves are expensive. And I was just looking at the diverter plate.

    High pressure in solar panels

YES! It is a standard valve with a hole drilled in it. Not sure of the model, but I will check and buy the valve with the check valve instead of the hole. What happens when the system is running and water is flowing through the solar panels, but then the controller shuts it off because it has...

    High pressure in solar panels

https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/mw6yYQ00ihSf4g7mex-RjdMTjNZETYmyPJy0liipFm0?feat=directlink You can see the valve is set so water goes up to the solar panels. On the way back down, there is a check valve. There is a small hole in the 3-way valve that allows the panels to drain. But it...

    High pressure in solar panels

I have a spillover spa with my pool and only one pump - very basic. When in spa mode, suction and return are in the spa only and because some of the jets can be closed, the pressure is higher than when the pump is circulating the pool. Pool circulating pressure is about 7 psi and when in spa...

    Pool losing water

Since you previously isolated the spa from the pool via the valves, you either have a crack in the spa or the drain line has cracked or come loose. It could be cracked somewhere along the route from the spa to the pump and if you have some pavers that are sinking in an area - that might be a...

    No flow from spa jets

Ha. That is funny. Things like that have happened to me. I always forget to check the obvious first, and start with the more complicated scenarios - and end up wasting lots of time and kicking myself when the easy solution is figured out.

    Pool losing water

This exactly happened to friends of ours recently with a pre-formed spa and pavers. The spa settled and the drain pipe came loose or cracked. Luckily, since it was all pavers around, they did not have to tear up a slab, but it was still a job to redo the spa, get it leveled, etc.

    Pool losing water

Sounds like you have a leak in the spa. Mine leaked, and it was around where the drain meets the gem coat finish. Sounds like your leak is with the drain or drain line too since it went below the jets.

    To high pressure?

That is too high for just a standard pressure test. But it should not blow the pipe or fittings unless they were not installed correctly in the first place. 2 in PVC sch 40 is good for approx 250 psi - and burst pressure is even higher. Pressure testing with air is typical and easier.

    Sand not good for pump?

I'm not kidding - Sahara Desert sand - going as far as Texas - google recent news reports. This happens every so often - sometimes it just makes it somewhat hazy. But this time there is quite a bit falling out of the sky. I notice it most on the solar panels on the roof. Anyway, I vacuum via...

    Sand not good for pump?

I have been getting a lot of sand in my pool. It is coming from the Sahara and is a very fine brown sand. It settles in the corners of the pool and after vacuuming it up, the pump started making a terrible sound. I took the pump apart, cleaned it and it has been working fine with no noise for...

    Compupool CPX-36 Install and Review

You can go into the maintenance menu setting and change this. 1) Turn off the power at the source (your electrical breaker). 2) Hold down the “Superchlor” and “Winter Mode” buttons simultaneously while switching your breaker back on, and continue holding them down for ten seconds. 3) The...

    constant return leaks

Did you check their first fix to see if the leak is not in the same spot? What caused the first leak? Even in 30 year old PVC, there is usually a good reason it starts to leak.

    Help with pump schedule

It will cost more to run the pump 10 hrs, so I would use 100% SWG for 8 hrs.

3 questions about my pool equipment

Should easily be able to make your own tool. I made one out of appropriately sized diameter pvc pipe and cut the end to leave 4 notches. Made it about 4 inches long, drilled a hole through the other end to put a screwdriver through to use as leverage to turn it. Looks like your light might...
