    C-19 Vaccine-I got one

Where I am in California they just opened up for all food & ag workers this week, and got mine today  Was pretty easy to find an appointment at an urgent care near my house. Got the Moderna. Been just a few hours, so far so good, slight soreness in arm.

Contemplating switching from pebblesheen to quartz last minute

Here's more of an action shot of what ours looks like when swimming. Originally we wanted white and were going to go with the Cielo, but then decided to go with something more blue because we didn't want the sun shelf to look washed out.

Contemplating switching from pebblesheen to quartz last minute

Yeah it does have some sparkle to it, what they call shimmering sea. It's not particularly noticeable, I think it just helps produce a nice bright color in the water. https://www.pebbletec.com/browse-our-products/shimmering-sea/ If someone who didn't know anything about pool finishes looked at...

Contemplating switching from pebblesheen to quartz last minute

They say it is lasts as long as the regular pebble... but it has not been around nearly as long, so I don't really know for sure, but I'm pretty confident it will last longer than plaster. My understanding (and I may be mistaken) is that the pebble fina is very similar to quartz. A big part of...

Contemplating switching from pebblesheen to quartz last minute

I think that's an issue with any colored finish. Mine has some mottling, but I'm the only one who notices -- I think that's true for most pool owners, they notice all the imperfections but no on else ever does. Also keep in mind that the people who are happy with theirs are less likely to take...

Contemplating switching from pebblesheen to quartz last minute

I have the Pebble Fina and am extremely happy with it. I would agree that it is pretty smooth, with just the right amount of grip. It's very comfortable. Also, costs less than the other pebble tec finishes. Not nearly as rough as the Pebble Sheen. You can see pictures in the build link in...

Is there anything proactive to do for new pool owner in Tx (pool never closed) as weather warms up?

I normally see it drop over the winter due to dumping water from the pool either before or after rain, so basically water replacement. It does degrade a bit due to sun and heat, but that's pretty slow.

Is there anything proactive to do for new pool owner in Tx (pool never closed) as weather warms up?

You really don't want to be using trichlor tabs for regular chlorination, or your CYA is going to go up very quickly and become unmanageable. You want to be using liquid chlorine almost all the time to maintain your CYA at an appropriate level.

    New pool questions

Go with the salt system, it's a much better sanitizer than uv/ozone. The saltwater system generates chlorine, which will sanitize all the water in your pool, all the time. The UV systems only sanitize the water that happens to be passing through it at any give time -- you would still need to...

Is there anything proactive to do for new pool owner in Tx (pool never closed) as weather warms up?

Sounds like you are doing it... how's your filter? Cleaning the cartridges is on my to-do list as spring starts to approach. I like starting the season with a CYA of around 40, then I have a little room to throw in some tablets if I go out of town for more than a few days over the course of...

    Pebble finish ABOVE waterline

I think you are going to have problems keeping it clean at the waterline, and it could also be prone to fading above the waterline. Also, looks like WetEdge would exclude that from their warranty, so my guess is they think it's a bad idea...

    The Pool Cleaner. (Poolvergnuegen)

Someone correct me if I'm mistaken, but I'm not sure that's true... I leave mine in all the time, and only take it out when we swim. This time of year it almost never comes out, I just hit the button whenever I see dirt in the pool and clean it every now and then. Seems to me that as long as...

Audio Video setup around pool patio

My system is super simple. I got a cheap 50" roku tv from Costco and a rolling stand to mount it on. I have a sound bar, and a bracket to attach it to the TV. The sound bar has a wireless subwoofer that sits in the corner on the patio. During swim season we just wheel the tv out there, and...

    How screwed am I?

Yeah it all comes down to whether it was sudden and accidental. In my case, the leak detection guy determined it was a few weeks, which apparently was sudden enough. In truth, it may have been happening longer, I don’t know. There was already plenty of mold by that point.

    How screwed am I?

Most of the quotes I get from agents are not competitive. I have found an agency now that is competitive on homeowners, but for me on auto no one can touch Geico, not even remotely close. They are hundreds of dollars a year cheaper than the next closest I have found. Been that way for many...

    How screwed am I?

My policy renewed in July right before my water damage claim. I *almost* changed insurers at that time to save $75, and I'm glad I didn't or I'd have the two insurers pointing fingers at each other. I'm fully expecting them to cancel my policy or send my rates through the roof when it renews...

    How screwed am I?

A $25k check from the insurance company to kick things off really helps lol. I still can't believe they replaced the entire floor instead of trying to just pay for those two little bedrooms where it warped.

    How screwed am I?

Back in July I noticed laminate flooring warping in two bedrooms on either side of a hall bath. Turned out the pipe in the wall was leaking where the tub spigot connected. I called our insurance company, they sent out a leak detection guy, who found the leak and determined it was recent and...

Please help me with my new pool build and equipment

Do you have a Pebble Tec dealer there? If so, look into their Pebble Fina product. Supposed to have the longevity of pebble, but it feels like plaster. Also usually cheaper than regular pebble. You can see what mine looks like in the build photos in my signature, that's the Bella Blue color.

Just got a pellet grill - looking for grilling and smoking suggestions

Also you need to get the good pellets, lots of the big name brand ones use fillers and fake flavor -- these are my favorite: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00819OICI/ref=as_sl_pc_tf_til

Just got a pellet grill - looking for grilling and smoking suggestions

I've actually used mine to bake a lasagna when my oven was being used for something else. Also home-made jerky is amazing, lots of recipes online. Probably my favorite thing that I use it all the time for is tri-tip -- but I think that cut is a west coast thing, or at least it used to be...

    Mattresses

We have a Saatva that we are pretty happy with, though we did end up adding a memory foam topper. DO NOT buy a GhostBed -- at least if you think you might want to return it. Supposed to be a "hassle-free" process. So we decided to return ours... they made us find a charity to donate it to...

Pool Heater Type - Long Island, NY

Pool Heater Type - Long Island, NY

You might want to reconsider this. A solar cover will cut your overnight heat loss in half, which will cut your electric or gas heating costs in half. I really didn't want one, but it didn't take long for me to see the light. My Pentair 140 consumes about 7.5kw per hour, so you can plug in...

Solar Thermal vs Photovoltaic + Heat Pump - averaged over whole year (California / Bay Area)

We are in central California. We opted to pretty much cover our roof in pv panels, and use a heat pump for the pool. There are a lot of moving parts to figure out which is the best option -- the cost of the panels, how much electricity the heat pump uses, your overall heating needs, etc. etc...

    Borates. Better practices

Glad I'm not the only one, my borates is somewhere between 30 and 50, I think. I basically go by what I put in, then guesstimate the loss over time based on how my CYA and calcium have changed. I was at Leslie's one day to pick up acid and asked if they tested for borates. Their response was...
