One year review of Encore Cool! Deck Coating

Thanks for the update. I am considering this product on our central FL pool deck.

    I think I have a Problem

I came across Orenda after seeing their start up videos on Youtube and they seem like a very science oriented company... they have their own pool app kind of like Pool Math to maintain LSI. I was impressed. I'm surprised that they couldn't get your chemistry fixed after 4 months. Another...

    Wiring Woes

Thanks- based on the pic I sent, that breaker is 2 pole, but doesn't appear to be GFCI. Should I go get the proper breaker from Lowe's? The pool has been running on that breaker for decades- scary.

    Wiring Woes

This is the pic of the breaker (also has a pool light breaker). . . some of the neutrals are pig-tailed together so i thought just capping it seemed too easy.

    Wiring Woes

Haha- see above post- that is what an electrician said. I thought that the neutral had to be safely terminated somewhere. Can you just cap it?

    Wiring Woes

So, I just talked to an electrician on Just Answer online (paid $5 for a free trial) and he said to just use the 240 VAC configuration and cap the neutral at the timer. Does that sound right?

    Wiring Woes

Hey Folks, My pump timer (Intermatic T104P) stopped working, resulting in me having to manually turn it on/off. I decided to replace it with the GE Smart Z-Wave 40-Amp Switch so I could get into automation. The pump is configured for 220 and fed by two 20 amp breakers with a neutral wire (4...

Concrete Stain vs. Acrylic Deck Paint

From what I've seen on youtube, the stains is very thin and retains most of the roughness of the surface. I think it holds up to traffic better, but holds more dirt. The acrylic will form a layer which will not hold dirt, but if the prep/bond isn't perfect, it will peel. I also have the...

Concrete Stain vs. Acrylic Deck Paint

Now that our pool is refinished, we're going to resurface the concrete deck. It has textured knockdown with a 12-year old concrete stain. The PB recommended two coats of 100% acrylic paint, and not to re-coat with concrete stain. He said that stain actually holds more dirt and mold in the...

Plaster manufacturer wants 7.0-7.2 pH at start-up- why?

Hey, The manufacturer of my quartz finish (Pre Marbelite Mix Marquis) says this on their warranty page: "Afterwards [start-up], balance the pool water to the above noted water parameters. Check the pH several times per week for the first few weeks and add pool acid pre-diluted to the deep end...

The Numbers Game - TA and CH levels for new plaster

Thanks- just saw the Speed Stir in the signature- very cool. Will be getting one of those. Jb Lizzl- when you say the TA and CH may still go up from the plaster, does that means the water is pulling calcium from the plaster to balance itself? I remember the NPC saying that you should run...

The Numbers Game - TA and CH levels for new plaster

We're very excited to have a new quartz surface in our pool. It was filled one week ago and I have been doing tests and balancing twice a day using my TF100 to maintain the levels. I'm having a hard time deciding what numbers to use. The NPC start-up guide (from here...

Need a quick answer - is my contractor doing this right?

So, I have a lot to update, but first, please help me figure out what is staining the new surface. The pool is not even done filling up and these small spots have begun forming in various places. They may be related to an oak tree nearby. I scratched in with my finger and there is nothing...

Need a quick answer - is my contractor doing this right?

Alright- you guys have pumped me up. I'm ready to go to war with my spec sheets (and google translate for the workers). I've only paid for half the job- haha. I have him in writing telling me that he skipped the acid wash step on his own contract so I think I'm in a good position. Based on...

Need a quick answer - is my contractor doing this right?

Thank you! Good news- I texted the contractor pics along with the Permakote spec sheet and asked him to please make sure the entire surface is bonded and he said they would do it Monday. Apparently, this plaster sub contractor is the self-described "best crew in Orlando". . . I'm thinking that...

Need a quick answer - is my contractor doing this right?

Thanks for the prompt reply. This morning he appealed to authority and told me in 30 years he's never had a customer ask him these things- all I was doing was reading from the spec sheet. So, he will question on what authority I'm making the demands. Based on the pictures, should all the...

Need a quick answer - is my contractor doing this right?

Hello, We are in the middle of our long-awaited resurface job and I'm seeing some concerning things. Our old plaster required a total chip out, but the sub contractor did leave what seemed to me like around a 15% coverage of old plaster on the final chipped out surface. Today, the subs...

    Help with SLAM

Well, I'm going on two weeks and here are the results at yesterday's reading. There is no green algae, but there is some black stuff (algae) deep down in the surface erosion spots in the plaster. The FC loss test has been good for a week and I built a PVC aerator to get the TA down. FC: 4...

    Help with SLAM

I have two filters. Also, I tested the pH when the FC was 3 and it was 6.8. After running all day, I can just make out a shadow of the 3rd step, but we are still VERY cloudy.

    Help with SLAM

Ok, the FC reading this morning was the same as last night. I also tested TA and it is 170. So my pH is 6.8 and the TA is a bit high. Should I add soda ash? Report on cleaning methods. I have been using TSP and the aquacomb to clean the filters with decent results, but it still left some...

    Help with SLAM

Thanks Richard, I am doing an overnight FC loss test. Because I was right at 3 ppm earlier this evening, I added about 1.5 gallons of chlorine and waited 2 hours with no sun. The test came back at 21ppm FC!!!! (2x) Can that be right? Small amounts of chlorine make huge changes. So, I guess...

    Help with SLAM

I got the TF100 test kit in and measured the FC. I tested it 4 times to make sure. The # of drops to clear were : 6, 3, 6, 7 (I'm not sure why its fluctuating), but I figure my FC is 3 FC: 3 CC: 1 (2 drops to clear) CYA: This was so low that I filled up the observation tube and could still...

    Hi from Orlando

Hi, This is Mike Himes. We have lived in Orlando for 9 years and each year we say we'll refinish the pool- haha. It still looks like money for that is sometime off, so we'll have to make do. Looks like lots of great info at this forum. Thank you for you time and expertise. Mike

Awesome- thanks! I did run the hose leaf catcher again and got some more debris out. Looks like I'll be cleaning that filter a LOT.

    Help with SLAM

Hello All, Thank you for this forum. I've learned a lot in reading the posts, but have some questions now. I'll start by saying this pool is old and badly needs to be re-plastered. There are pit marks and rough patches all over the pool that harbor algae (probably 30 altogether). To make...
