We built our pool in 2018, and we were first timers also. I wish I had discovered this website prior to contracting. We might have made some different choices. There is a wealth of info here...I could easily spend hours daily reading through the forums!

Best Places to Buy Liquid Chlorine

So I just came back from Home Depot in Richmond/Katy area and I'm both happy and seriously annoyed. HDX 3 pack of 10% LC is now $12.98, with no discount for purchasing quantity 4. They have raised the price by 45%! On a good note, the chlorine was fresh fresh fresh! Date was 323, so bottled...

    Liquid Chlorine from Pinch-a-Penny

I am having a difficult time getting liquid chlorine in Houston this summer. I am guessing supply chain problems with COVID-19. Anyway, my go to source has always been Home Depot, which typically has plentiful amounts of very fresh, 10% LC. Except this summer. We have a newly opened...

    Cloudy water?

Agreed! I generally lose 4.5 to 5 ppm per day in the heat of the Summer. I use the Pool Math app and aim to keep my lowest FC at least 1-2 ppm above the minimum....which means the app yells at me every day when I tell it I want to dose above the recommended maximum!

    Cloudy water?

Ok. Passed the OCLT test. Water looks much clearer today. I’m guessing I need to run the pump constantly when we have these days long stretches of rain that wash a bunch of debris into the pool!

    Cloudy water?

Help! A few weeks ago I slammed my pool because I was seeing a little bit of algae. Slam went fine, got through OCLT, CC at zero and pool was crystal clear and beautiful. Since then, I've maintained my CYA at 60 and then 50. Since completing my slam, I haven't let my FC fall below 5ppm...

    What is your daily dosage?

Depending on how sunny it is, I average 3-5 quarts of 10% a day during late June through mid August. My pool gets a LOT of sun. My CYA is 50, and I try to never let FC go below 5ppm.

    SLAM questions

Thanks for the info! I have been watching the pool and adjusting chlorine every 2-4 hours (I had to leave for an appointment...thus the four hour gap). I noticed that I am burning chlorine like crazy...way more than before I started the SLAM process yesterday. Over the past few days, I have...

    SLAM questions

Hi TFP gurus! I am mid-SLAM and I have questions! 1. Vacuuming to waste. Several posts I've read said to vacuum to waste to get rid of the dead algae and other debris. My vacuum is integrated to the pool and runs into the filter. If I *can* vacuum to waste, I don't know how. I usually just...

    Slamming with an ozonator

Well, I went out to brush the pool this afternoon and saw a bit of algae brush off the walls of the pool. Sad. Other than the algae, the pool is clear (I can see the individual pebbles in the plaster on the floor of the pool.) Numbers generally look good, and I'm pretty religious about...

    Winter Chlorine Dosing

Yes, I am losing less than 1 ppm of FC per day....thanks for your quick response!

    Winter Chlorine Dosing

Well hello again. I have a question about dosing LC in the winter for a pool that remains open (50-60 degrees typically.) As cooler weather started in November, I was still testing daily, and found that I needed just under a quart a day to keep my pool at 8 FC. When the weather is cold and...

Hot climates chime in! Summer vs Winter time FC usage?

Your water temp was 87°?!? In November? Can that be right? Here in Texas my water temps are down in the 60's with daytime temps anywhere from 40-90....

Hot climates chime in! Summer vs Winter time FC usage?

Hey djdonte, you are just down the road a few miles from me. I was using a gallon a day back around the end of June/ first of July. My LC usage dropped off to about 2 quarts a day by September (give or take a bit), and with the recent cold snap (who would have expected 32 degrees in Houston...

    Choosing the right SWCG

Thanks, @Jimrahbe for your response! For my own education, assuming I had a much larger pool (say 45,000 gallons) and Hayward automation, what would I do then for the SWCG, since the 40,000 Acqurite looks to be Hayward's largest unit?
  19. CarolD

    Choosing the right SWCG

I've been doing research on which SWCG to buy to convert my pool from liquid chlorine. I have all Hayward equipment and automation right now. I've read where I should size the SWCG at twice the size of my pool, so minimum 42,500 gallons. I saw a previous post where someone suggested going...

    Total Alkalinity question

Thanks for the reassurance on my TA! Is it possible that with the lower PH in my pool, I could be seeing the scale dissolve? The problem seems to have diminished somewhat from a few months ago. Is that just my wishful thinking?

    Liquid Chlorine

I have to add my support for the pool math app. Go ahead and spring for the $8 or so subscription. It's worth it to be able to keep track of previous values. I still test every day (because that's just me) but you will get to the point where you know what your numbers are going to be and how...

    Total Alkalinity question

I just went back to reread the Pool School posts about recommended TA levels and now I have questions. Background: I had been keeping my TA around 80 and letting my PH creep upwards to 8.0 before lowering it with MA. With fairly high water temps in my area, that resulted in a positive CSI...

    HDX CHLORINE FROM HOME DEPOT???

Interesting observation about Home Depot and LC storage. Every time I've gone to purchase, they have it stored inside...except once. It was back in April or so, and when I went to look for it, they had moved it outside. I complained to the store manager and they tried to tell me it was ok...

Home Depot HDX Chlorine from April

Love the table showing LC half-life at various temps. I store my LC in a closet inside the house, so it stays at 75 degrees once I get it home from the store. My Home Depot also stores the LC inside, so it's temperature controlled there as well, at least once they've gotten it into the store...

    Liquid Chlorine

Check again at HD. Just looked and at least as of their current online inventory, they have 9 3-packs available at the Temple store. The chlorine they sell is 10%, and is sold in 3-packs for $9.98. If you buy four 3-packs, they take a dollar off each, so 12 gallons for $35.92 plus tax. Be...

    Pumice Stone

Ok I feel really dumb here. I am trying to clean tiles at the water line which seem to have a calcium buildup. I am using a pumice stone that I purchased at Home Depot in the pool chemical section. As I am rubbing off the buildup, the pumice stone is dissolving and going into the water. Also...

How to calculate how much CYA in a puck

I know this question has been asked before, and I have read the answer, but I can't find it right now. I am kicking myself. I left the water on overnight and did an unintended water exchange. I measured this morning and my CYA had dropped so I could see the dot with a full tube, so I am...

Pool essentials liquid chlorine - retail

Try Home Depot. I was able to purchase liquid chlorine throughout last winter. It is 9.98 for three gallon multipack of 10%.
