Can't isolate skimmers from main drain

Yeah, no diverter. Just two open holes. I'll go the sump route. Does anyone have any insight into why a pool builder would go this route? assuming it was the original installer who did this. I can't think of a good reason for it, but maybe back in the day people had a reason?

Can't isolate skimmers from main drain

Two lines, and one valve. Turning the valve one way completely turns off one skimmer. Turning it the other way completely turns off the other.

Can't isolate skimmers from main drain

Two skimmers, two main drains. The one in the deep end near the two main drains has the two holes open in it. the other one has a plugged hole and one open.

Can't isolate skimmers from main drain

Ok, so I have two open holes in one skimmer. This is my third pool but probably 6th or 7th that I've helped maintain, and I've never seen this setup. But this is also probably the oldest pool I've dealt with. I'm really not sure what that second hole is supposed to accomplish. If I'm right in...

Can't isolate skimmers from main drain

There is one valve on the line coming into the pump, and it appears to only switch between the shallow skimmer and the deep end skimmer. My assumption (I'll dive in the deep end in a bit to verify) is that on both settings, the main drains are sucking, but I'm not sure. There is no way for me to...

Can't isolate skimmers from main drain

Moved from here. I found this when searching for a similar issue. I just bought a house with a pool, and the CYA is high so I'm trying to drain/refill. I thought I had shut off the skimmers, and was pumping my water to waste, but then I heard the pump sucking air. Sure enough, after re-filling...

    Scumbug Turned Yellow?

I suppose there might have been a higher than normal oil content in the water I replaced........

    Scumbug Turned Yellow?

I put another new scumbug in--just to see. It also turned yellow... I could see that potentially being a rust-ish color, but I don't see any rust anywhere in the tub, and the filter is still white.

    What tester are you using?

    Scumbug Turned Yellow?

No, filter is still nice and white. I meant to put that in the original. So it's either something specific to the material in the scum bug, or it's something that was on the surface?

    Scumbug Turned Yellow?

I put a new scumbug in recently after a partial water swap and filter change, and it turned yellow. The only chemicals I've put in since the water swap (about 100 gallons on a 400ish gallon hot tub) have been dichlor and muriatic acid. Anybody ever hear of something like this? I only swapped...

    Water Replacement Interval WITH Ozonator

I've seen this formula for water replacement interval (WRI) in some old posts multiple times by chem geek: WRI (days) = (2/9) x (Spa Size in Gallons) / (person-hours per day) Each time he says this is for the dichlor-then-bleach method with NO ozonator. I never see where he or anyone else says...

Self made hot tub almost done!

Ok. So your original problem was that you're getting this "flow" error code, and we still haven't verified that you're getting the right flow at the heater. The vacuum gauge is jumping all over the place in the second video. In the first video, it's basically pulling no vacuum at all as far as I...

    Hayward DE filter pressure drop

I had something very similar happen to my pool in Tennessee in the fall. I missed a few days of cleaning my skimmers when leaves were falling heavy, and I didn't think much of it. But I started to notice that my pump didn't appear to be pushing water as much as before. I thought maybe I got a...

Self made hot tub almost done!

I'd assume there is no issue with the pump wiring since you're priming and have water flow. If you had an issue, it pretty much wouldn't run. HOWEVER, since you have those two relief valves, it'd be pretty easy to put some pressure gauges on either side of the pump. Then, you can take those...

New Spa Question or Observation - TA and PH

That's a good point. I always forget that an imperial gallon is even a thing. Either way, the company is based out of TN, and I'm from TN, and I'm pretty 99% positive nobody in Tennessee uses an imperial gallon... That being said, I'm going to get a fill meter for my hose and just measure it...

Self made hot tub almost done!

It looks like your main pump is primed from the video. I don't think it's a suction side issue. However, if you have something that is restricting flow on the return side (any closed or partially closed valves, if you used any piping that was too small in diameter for some reason, if you have a...

New Spa Question or Observation - TA and PH

I always measure first before adding anything (unless I just hopped out of the tub--then I just add a few ounces and measure again the next day). I've been wondering since I have Borates in there as a buffer if I should consider lowering my TA any farther, but I've seen people saying multiple...

New Spa Question or Observation - TA and PH

I recently moved to Houston, and I bought a hot tub a couple of weeks ago for these cold winters and mild summers :p Anyway, I've had two other houses with two different pools, and have used the TFP method without a hitch. So far, everything is going fine with my spa (water is clear as can be)...

    Help with Hayward Heater

Your board went off and won't light up at all? Sounds like something was either wired incorrectly and you now have a bad board, or you had a bad board to begin with. Hard to speculate without knowing all the details, though. From the troubleshooting guide, if you're experiencing this problem...

Hayward Heater Issue - IF Code

So I'm coming back to this after several weeks to give a bit of an update and ask for help if anybody has any suggestions. I called Hayward a little over a week ago to describe my problem, and after telling them everything I've done so far (checked orifices, removed burn tubes and checked for...

Why does Pentair 2 VST pump turn off when heater reaches desired temperature?

Yeah, what Pool Clown said. It sounds like your system is automated to kick the pump on when the heater needs to run to increase your pool's temp. And when it's done, since it isn't set to be on, it turns it off. Are you certain your timer is set to have the pump on during the times when your...

Hayward Heater Issue - IF Code

I tried this as stated in the original post. See, that's what I have been wondering about. I wasn't sure how the sensor worked, but I assumed it was looking for some change in resistance based on a rise in temperature so a bad flame sensor didn't make sense to me. So I tore apart the unit...

    Variable Speed Pump Data/Discussion

You're right. I think what I'm seeing is due to a likely issue with pressure side gauge. I've suspected it for a while anyway. This would be a good time to replace it. Thanks again for looking over my write-up.

Hayward Heater Issue - IF Code

I used sandpaper, wiped it off with cloth, it still looked bad, then I used steel wool. It has oxidation, but I got most of it off. It really doesn't make sense to me how the thing could possibly be bad after one year. It's a piece of metal that's getting heated up by a rather large flame...

    Variable Speed Pump Data/Discussion

Thanks for reading and responding, mas. I need to go read your signature posts. They look thorough and educational. I don't think that RPM and flow rate are linear as the change in TDH and RPM are not linear and the pump curves are not linear. When you reduce your rpm, you reduce your head by...

    Variable Speed Pump Data/Discussion

I've gone over the data some more, and added in the power calculations. I've attached what I have now. For reference (in case the picture eventually disappears or is corrupted as happens in forums sometimes), the pump at max speed--3075 rpm--costs $12.16/month for 1 turnover per day and flows at...

    Borate Scientific Studies

That's my point. A lot of people say these things are "correct" based on anecdotal evidence, but the only thing I've seen (I had already seen a different study but thanks for the one you posted) that's scientific is the algaestatic properties. I guess maybe the reduction in chlorine could be...

    Borate Scientific Studies

I read this by JasonLion in the Borates sticky: "Borates inhibit algae growth, improve the feel and appearance of the water, buffer PH, and reduce chlorine consumption. The reduction in chlorine demand varies from pool to pool. Borates prevent algae from getting started, so you don't use up...
