How can I have algae when maintaining at 7ppm

I am new to TFP as of last year and did not realize that safe swimming chlorine levels were dependant on CYA levels. Was not aware that it was safe to swim at slam levels. I guess I need to go back to Pool School! Are the safe levels discussed there? This thread helps a lot for me because I...

    Learned a valuable lesson Sunday

Thanks for the post. I have passed the slam but have had issues with higher than normal daytime FC losses. No one ever me filmed to me to check skimmer edit gate closely. I am going to pull them off and scrub everything down. Have never done that before.

TFP Newbie - Cannot get fc to register

Thanks guys. Yeeah, those lage losses were while itwas coming down from shock levels, It does seem to slow down as itgets closer to target levels. Now that my CYA is at 60, at least it isn't dropping towards zero nearly as fast. I will see how it does over the next few days. I will be going...

TFP Newbie - Cannot get fc to register

The values I posted above are from using my Taylor Kit. Sorry my bad, I meant FC not CC as you noted. I will edit the original post. As far as the pool store tests, I had to go to the pool store for something else so I took a water sample out of curiosity. It confirmed that I cannot rely on...

TFP Newbie - Cannot get fc to register

Got it, thx Tex! Still SLAMMING although a little blindly until my R-0871 arrives hopefully tomorrow. My water clarity is almost there - not crystal clear but really close. Just can't imagine what is in the water still that is causing my FC to drop like a rock during the day. I guess I...

TFP Newbie - Cannot get fc to register

I did not know that water had to be crystal clear to pass OCLT. It is still slightly cloudy so It sounds like I need to slam some more. Problem is I am about to run out of reagent and will not be able to verify FC of 22 until tomorrow when more reagent should arrive. I will add more Chlorox per...

TFP Newbie - Cannot get fc to register

I did use the 10ml sample size during slam but did the 25ml after I thought I was done just to get a more accurate read. Thanks for the advice about the 2 scoops though. One scoop usually gets it slightly pink but I was putting two in together it more it to a deeper pink. I don't need to do...

TFP Newbie - Cannot get fc to register

Okay, I thought I was done with my slam as of Sunday morning. As reported above, FC held overnight at 25ppm. SUnday was partly sunny. I did not check FC Sunday night because I have almost depleted all the R-0871 out of my new Taylor Test kit during the slam. I have more on the way but probably...

TFP Newbie - Cannot get fc to register

Awesome, thanks for your help Tex! I had not noticed the CH thing about not needing to add CH for vinyl lined pools. Sounds like I just need to monitor to make sure it doesn't get too high but not to raise it to a minimum level. That was a big take away from this conversation. Have a great...

TFP Newbie - Cannot get fc to register

My slam is complete with FC at 25 ppm and 0 overnight change and CC at 0.5. My current numbers are: FC 25.0 CC 0.5 TA 70 TH 110 PH 8.0 CYA 46 I need to buy a new thermometer but am guessing water temperature to be about 60-65 degrees. So should I try to get TA up to about 100 and CH up to...

Thx, will report back next. Week. I do have my signature set up but for some reason it is not being appended to my responses. I also have the box checked to display it. I am responding from my iPad now and it looks like it will show up. The thread was created, and my other responses were from my...

Thanks Tex! Long story, but I had to rewrite this post and forgot o mention that I have my Hayward Chlorinator with Triclor tabs running. Should I turn it off or just leave it on for now. I will be out of town when my test kit arrives and will not be able to start slamming for about 7 days...
