    Taylor Test Kits for Canadians

Thank you for that thread, a lot to consider there. If I have to buy a chlorine test kit, I can, it's just one additional step to convert the FC reading to Br.

    Taylor Test Kits for Canadians

Hello fellow Canadians! I'm hoping there are at least a few of you over here. I have been using my Taylor test kit (K-2106, as I have a Bromine pool) for the past year and it has been perfect. However, all my reagents are starting to expire. Where are you guys getting your Taylor test kits...

    Pool pump not priming

Thanks! I hope that is all it turns out to be. Gotta be one of the easiest fixes, compared to what I was thinking I might have to do.

    Pool pump not priming

Thank you, I will give that a shot. As it turns out, the pump has primed again. I put the diverter valve to only pull water from the spa. After a minute or two it primed properly. Then I put the valve to suction from the pool and it immediately lost prime. While watching the water flow into...

    Pool pump not priming

Oh I didn't realize that. Yes it shows pressure around 16 PSI when off. I'll look to replace that. If the Jandy Valve was cracked in the diverter portion, that shouldn't introduce a suction leak, though would it? It's still all a closed system no matter what way it diverts to (or both).

    Vacuuming Pill Bugs

Getting back to this, is DE effective in the rain? Where I would place this on the outside (or inside) will get significantly wet.

    Pool pump not priming

Another thing I should mention is when I turn the pump off, I can feel the water rushing into the pump from the suction side. I can feel the jandy valve and pipes connected to it rumbling from the water coming in.

    Pool pump not priming

I do have another Jandy Valve that is used to separate the filtered/heated water back to the pool or spa. I watched a few YouTube videos on how to repair them and it doesn't seem too bad. The only thing that I couldn't find, was a pressure relief valve on my sand filter (Hayward Pro series)...

    Pool pump not priming

Hello, I've been in my home for about a year now, and our pool has been working great. Being and indoor pool, we have run it throughout the entire year. There have been no issues relating to the pump or anything related. About a week ago, I noticed that the pump was running but the water in...

    Vacuuming Pill Bugs

I think that should be available here to try. I'm hesitant to use anything indoors as the pool is less than a foot away from that ledge which will invariably mean whatever we put there will be splashed, and possibly go into the pool. But outside, I'm really not as concerned. I'll look for some...

    Vacuuming Pill Bugs

Looks like it's a moot point, as I don't think they'll ship to Canada and I'm not about to bring it over myself. I'll have to find something similar in Canada, if available.

    Vacuuming Pill Bugs

Thanks for your reply! I'll look into that, mostly my concern is how safe it is around little children.

    Vacuuming Pill Bugs

My indoor pool seems to attract a lot of pill bugs (aka sowbugs or woodbugs). They get into the pool room through the tracks in my sliding glass doors and then eventually make their way into the pool where they drown (I suppose?). This means that on most days, I'll get between 5-10 new pill bugs...

    SLAM a SPA

Thanks for that link, that's very interesting. I have a Bromine pool and since it is indoors, it has been easy to maintain. However, reading the following proposed changes to the labeling of Sodium Bromide says: That last point about UV. Does the sun's UV rays count in this, or are they...

    Weekly maintenance

Hey Canucklehead! A fellow BC'er here chiming in. I think you kind of already know from your post that the recommended way is a lot different than what you are doing. The biggest improvement you'll notice is if you do the following: Buy a titration test kit. I bought the Taylor series, and it...

Akalinity test for Taylor 2006 Pinkish Red or Full Red

Thank you for asking this (and mknauss for the answer). It's one of those little things I always had in the back of my head when counting drops.

    Test kit

Amazon.ca has them available direct from Taylor, however it still gets shipped from the US. The good thing about Amazon.ca is that anything purchased from there will not have any customs/duties added on after the fact. However, depending on where you are in Canada, it's a LOT cheaper if you...

Soon to be first time pool owner

It is well documented that Bromine is easier on the skin. There are some people who get allergic reactions to Chlorine, but appear to be fine with Bromine. I suspect most pool service people will recommend you switch to Chlorine, for the simple fact that this is what they are used to working...

Soon to be first time pool owner

Yep, I believe that's what will end up happening. When I went to the pool store, they said I had no Chlorine in my pool at all (they said it would be the same as Bromine), so I figured I would start fresh as a Chlorine pool. However, based on what I learned afterwards, there's still a high...

Soon to be first time pool owner

Welcome! I moved into a home with a Bromine pool this year as well. So take what I say below with a grain of salt as it's still relatively new for me too! My pool is indoors, so I think Bromine works well in this case. I made the mistake of going to the Pool Store the first chance I got, and...

    Pool test logistics.....

Fair enough, I'll start following the rules on the box. I doubt tossing it on the grass is much better though, so I'll find a drain.

    Pool test logistics.....

I grabbed one of those measured squeeze bottles (like those refillable ketchup/mustard bottles) from the dollar store. I put that into the water with the opening facing down so that water doesn't go into the bottle until my arm is elbow deep in the pool. Turn the bottle, let it fill up and...

Switching from power to liquid chlorine

You're right, I'm still relatively new at this (only had the pool for a couple of months, and only known about this website for a few weeks). Your response and the other one cleared up my misunderstanding.

    Thanks, that makes sense now.

Switching from power to liquid chlorine

What is the Shock column for on the FC/CYA Chart for? I was under the impression that TFP still recommends shocking the pool (with liquid chlorine) on a regular basis. Or is that only when you encounter algae? Thanks for posting the videos, I hadn't seen those yet and they're done very well.

Proper Filtering of Spill Over spa

Thanks for your response! My spa runs about 1C hotter than the pool (29C Spa | 28C Pool). To get it up to 100F like recommended (or 37C) shouldn't take too long. I have my first guests over at our new place for a little swim tomorrow so I'll turn up the thermostat during the day and reverse the...

    Outdoor wood/nice looking storage unit

I'm in Canada, so you'll probably be able to find this cheaper! https://www.walmart.ca/en/ip/shelve-it-5-shelf-wood-shelf/6000102759694 I bought this just a month ago for inside our pool room (indoor). It's un-treated pine so you can stain/paint/treat it as you like. At $30, it was the...

Proper Filtering of Spill Over spa

Oh excellent, I like that idea. I haven't had a chance to test it yet, but I suspect that heating the spa from 85 to 100 shouldn't take much longer than a few hours. So I can heat the hot tub on demand and not have to worry about wasting energy for the rest of the hours/days.
  29. Mclarenf3

Proper Filtering of Spill Over spa

I was thinking that too, but I suppose it'll require more energy as cold water will constantly be heated up. Whereas the other method will only require minimal energy to top up the heat.

Proper Filtering of Spill Over spa

Here are the photos (one showing all the pipes) and the other two showing close-up shots of the two valves. As you can see, I have it set 70/30 towards the pool/spa right now as I want to make sure the pool water is getting filtered/circulated the most right now. I suppose when I want to...
