Newbie building new pool - Automation and SWCG disagreements

Literally every pool service I called said saltwater pools were nothing but trouble. After a ton of research - I see they are correct. Nothing but trouble if you happen to own a pool service, as the pool owner can manage the chemistry themselves with very little work. According to CoverStar, pH...

J-box required for 12-volt LED lights?

Thanks for the reply! I’m the electrician in this case, so I guess so. I’ve done a ton of panel work in my past,so I’m comfortable with the process, and a friend of mine who is a master electrician is going to check everything along the way for me, as the 680/pool stuff is new to me. Based on...

J-box required for 12-volt LED lights?

Terrific. Exactly what I needed. I’ll have plenty of wire, so straight to the transformer it is.

J-box required for 12-volt LED lights?

Evening! I have two Pentair 5Gs that I’ll be installing soon in our new pool. I see conflicting info here about NEC 680 and requirements for a J-box when using 12-volt lights. Can someone clear that up for me? It would seem that you would bond the niche to the bond loop and then just run the...

    Load shedding a heat pump

See attached for the schematic as well as the invoice, which should give you everything you need. I should clarify that this load shedding relay was installed on the heat pump side as specified by AirEase, the manufacturer of the heat pump - then that relay was wired to the a/c relay inside the...

    Pressure test kit for 2"?

I sure appreciate the detailed response. That makes complete sense, and I’ll proceed accordingly. Thanks! Wes

    Load shedding a heat pump

I installed a Generac 22kw unit last summer. I have a gas heater on the pool (so no load issue there), but have a heat pump on the house. For the house heat pump, I had to order a $70 relay that was typically used by utility companies to shed a/c loads in times of peak demand in places like AZ...

    Pressure test kit for 2"?

Good evening! I am nearing the point in our build that I'll need to pressure test our skim and return lines, which are all 2". I assumed that someone would sell a simple test kit that would attach to the lines in a temporary way so that you could test a line, move it, test the next one, etc...

Fill water on well source - CH question

Thanks. It is in the back yard outside a walk-out basement and everything does slope toward that area. They shot everything with a laser and have raised the pool such that I’d be really surprised if we end up with anything going into the pool. We’ve also got a channel drain between the pool and...

Fill water on well source - CH question

Well that's the nicest thing someone's said about me all week. :) If I do the above, it looks like Polyquat 60 is not necessary. That said, if it's cheap insurance, I would happily do it. Advice on that? Sorry for all the basic questions - I really hope I can return the favor once I have...

Fill water on well source - CH question

Wonderful. Thank you. From what I'm reading, it would appear that I don't need to worry about CYA (will be zero on fill if I'm understanding correctly) until I open the pool. Is that correct?

Fill water on well source - CH question

One other question - I had my water tested by a lab in June due to installing a new water treatment system which showed our iron levels at 0.035 mg/L. I've seen a few posts where @duraleigh has warned against filling from a well because of iron. Is this enough to be concerned? I can post the...

Fill water on well source - CH question

Thanks - yes. We will close it as soon as I can get the water where it needs to be. I am nearly certain that they will be filling from a truck, so what that water looks like remains to be seen. I am pretty nervous about just balancing and closing right away - I would hate to do something that...

Fill water on well source - CH question

That calculator is really cool - I hadn't yet seen it. Not sure where I got my 40 number, so it looks like I'm good there. With my TA being 270, it looks like I should lower pH, then aerate and repeat as often as needed to get TA in line. Is the 270 number going to cause problems until I get...

Fill water on well source - CH question

Ok....so the new pool will be ready to be filled next week. My question is this: I see that target CH for a vinyl liner pool is on the 40 range. I got a TFT100 test kit and some salt strips, and tested my well water before it hits any treatment systems (we have an ozone system followed by a...

    CoverStar Sensor with IntelliCenter?

Mystery solved! Kudos to Pentair. The rep I've been working with was able to run down a manual and get authorization to release it. Keep in mind that this is marked as a draft. That said, it looks to be very complete. I must say that this is amazing customer service - you don't get people...

IntelliCenter: wire Intellichlor for constant power or through pump relay?

Aha! That explains it. It just didn't make sense to me that the control side of the unit would constantly power up and down with the cell. Thanks Jim!

IntelliCenter: wire Intellichlor for constant power or through pump relay?

Mercy sakes. Just solved my own problem. I now see there is no RS485 to an intellichlor. 🤦🏻‍♂️

IntelliCenter: wire Intellichlor for constant power or through pump relay?

Howdy folks. Hoping someone can clear up the IntelliCenter installation manual for me. I have an i5p with an intelliflo and intellichlor. I know the pump requires constant power and the RS485 connection controls it. Is the same true for the intellichlor? I’ve read the manual several times now...

    CoverStar Sensor with IntelliCenter?

I'm going through Coverstar Central for the cover, and they have been nothing but helpful. Their rep is just going to send the encoder with the cover next week and they will install it while they are here. It's the expansion card form Pentair that has no installation instructions. Freddy at...

    CoverStar Sensor with IntelliCenter?

So the saga continues... I heard back from the support rep. He said they are definitely not allowed to release the instructions, but he could walk me through how to hook it up.... :hammer: I told him that was fine....as long as I had a guarantee in writing that they would replace anything we...

    CoverStar Sensor with IntelliCenter?

Well...just got a quote from Coverstar Central for the rotary encoder used to sense the cover position - $675. 😬 I guess if I’m this far in, what’s another $675?

    CoverStar Sensor with IntelliCenter?

It does not allow remote operation of the cover - only senses position. It’s used to automatically reduce the SWCG when the cover is closed as well as increase when the cover opens. It can also be used as a fail-safe interlock to prevent a pump or valve from turning on when the cover is closed.

    CoverStar Sensor with IntelliCenter?

After about an hour on the phone with Pentair, they apparently have an internal document with installation instructions, but it has to go through legal before they can release it. I pushed back a little - the guy was very helpful - and he’s going to run it up the chain and email me as soon as he...

Help needed - Pool pad equipment dry fit - What would you change?

Okey done - third time’s the charm? - Rearranged the pump/suction lines for better pump access. - swapped the flow meter and check valve (gives flow reading right before SWCG, and also serves as a check valve, and the standard check valve prevents back flow into the pump during maintenance) -...
