First test of the year...looking for guidance

Been real hot and sunny the past 4-5 days. I've been good to keep the FC around 5-7...then 3 days ago it was 3ish. Today when swimming, I can still see the bottom well, but I can tell something is off...even my 13 year old noticed the water was not as clear as it normally is. I brought the...

Do you mean in the city water supply? If so, I'm not sure. Never had an issue before. The liner is older...close to 10 years.

No, very little debris in the pool. The cover did its job. The only thing different this year was the water loss due to the leak. On a side note, I did decide to do a SLAM to be on the safe side.

First test of the year...looking for guidance

I vacuumed the pool today for the first time. I noticed a yellowish - tinge around the outer edge on the bottom. I scrubbed with a brush and tried to vacuum...but nothing...it's almost as if it's stained. I don't recall this last fall when I closed, but maybe it was there and I just was used...

First test of the year...looking for guidance

CYA level is now at 35/40. I added chlorine yesterday...last night it was 10.5 / 11....this morning it is 9 / 9.5. Water is crystal clear, but there is some debris on the bottom. My pool is under a bunch of massive pine trees. PH is still at 7.5. Is there any need to do a SLAM, or can I...

First test of the year...looking for guidance

Opened the pool a few days back. There was a hole in the liner, leaving only about 20" of water at opening. I have filled to the top. Below are my initial readings. I know adding all the new water is the reason the CYA is so low. 10ish is a guess as I had to fill the tube all the way to the...

Ready to close the pool up. I'm all out of liquid chlorine, but I know I'll need about a jug to get it up to SLAM levels. If I purchased a 4 pack, will the remaining jugs go bad over the winter? I haven't tried Walmart to see if they carry individual jugs. It's probably going to be slim...

Update... Finally! My guess is the crummy weather in Central Illinois aided the process (pool temp is currently 62 degrees :(), but the water is clear and no overnight drop in Chlorine. I've learned my lesson and will not let this happen again. What a pain in the arse. Question...the FC is...

Yep, that was my thinking as well. Thanks for the response.

Thanks all. I'll keep plugging away. My guess is I haven't been consistent with this as I should have been.

Ok, thanks. I'll need to purchase some additional Chlorine tomorrow. Gone through a bunch the past 2 weeks. Also, will adding some DE to the sand filter help speed up the process? Thought maybe I'd grab some when I get the Chlorine. Also, when I vacuum, should I try to send as much to...

Deep Cleaned the sand. Been brushing. Vacuumed again this morning. Water still cloudy (see pic). Plus the Chlorine now seems to be getting 'eaten' quicker than maybe a week ago (which was a week after I started the SLAM). One thing I hadn't mentioned and I don't know if it matters...

I have not. Stupid question...how do I clean the sand?

Getting frustrated. I've kept the chlorine at 16ppm for over a week now. The water is still not clear. I vacuumed Saturday morning...even though I couldn't see the bottom very well. Still continuing to brush every day or so. Is it common to take this long?

Update... Still continuing with the SLAM. Did the overnight test. Was 17.5 last night and again this morning. CC was .5. However, the pool is not yet clear. It's better, but still has a ways to go. I brush the sides/bottom every couple of days. I haven't vacuumed and backwashed since I...

Not until this morning. I raised the chlorine to shock levels last night. When I checked this morning, the drop was between 1.5 and 2.0 ppm. Given this, I assume there is something in there the chlorine is eating. I plan to brush and vacuum later this morning and continue with the SLAM...

Around 40. I checked it tonight.

Forgot...I did add some water Sunday night (hose). Not sure if that matters, but thought I'd mention it.

Just Chlorine. Shall I start the SLAM?

So far this summer, things have gone 'swimmingly'...until yesterday. We haven't used the pool much over the past few weeks, but I've been diligent about checking the chemicals every 2 days, like I have the entire summer. I've tried to ensure I've kept the chlorine levels remain at minimum or...

Update... PH is now approaching 7.8, so I thought I'd drop back down to 7.2. I have some OLD sodium bisulfate. 5-10 years old. Is it ok to use or should I buy new? And if it's not ok to use, any ideas on how to dispose of it? Thanks!

UPDATE... Because of lousy weather (cold and lots of rain), we haven't been able to use the pool. Every day or two, I've checked the readings. The PH is steady at 7.5, and the FC continues to drop. Today I took the readings as follows. Given the FC is still in acceptable range, should I do...

What is the shelf life of the TF-100 test kit? Also, is it ok to keep in my garage over the summer (where it can get warm) or should I keep it indoors?

UPDATE.... After some trial and error in the placement of the sock, I figured out the best place was hanging in front of the return. All was dissolved as of ate yesterday afternoon. At noon today, I took the CYA reading and it was high 30's...so I'm calling it 40. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Update... I put the CYA in the sock (in skimmer) last night, but it is not yet dissolved. When I came home from work, my filter pressure was high, causing very little circulation in the pool. I went ahead and backwashed to get things moving again. I should have done this yesterday before...

So I'm clear, you are saying to add the Chlorine right now...correct? ...with the assumption that the CYA is at 30...even though it is not? Using the calculator, I would need to add 89oz of liquid chlorine (I have 12.5% bottles stocked up). I need to run out and get some stabilizer. Anything...

The pendulum has swung in the other direction. I drained some additional water from the pool, but was away from home longer than I expected, and more came out than I wanted. After refilling a second time (now darn close to a fresh fill), and running the pump for 30 minutes or so, my levels are...

Ok. One more issue. The pump was running fine...at least I thought it was. Yesterday, when draining, I backwashed to get the water level down to the skimmer and then drained the remainder of the way with an alternate method. When I turn the pump on now, it runs for about 2 seconds with...

If I wanted to get it closer to 40 to limit the amount of chlorine I need...what additional water drop would be required? 1/3?
