    Rising Calcium Hardness

I have a SWCG that does a good job of balancing my chlorine level. If slowly rising calcium hardness is my concern, I guess I don't understand how adding cal-hypo (i.e. increasing my chlorine level) will affect calcium hardness.

Cal-hypo? I am not familiar with it.

    Rising Calcium Hardness

The CH in my 2,500-gallon in-ground spa has a tendency to creep upward over time (from about 250 to 375ppm in 3 months). I try to keep the level in the 200 - 400ppm range. Since we do not have hard water, I am curious what might be the cause. The chemistry is checked & balanced weekly & the spa...

    Pentair Pump Suddenly Stopped Working

Thanks, Jim. I think I will have a trusted Pentair tech take a look. Depending upon what he finds & recommends, I will make a decision. The pump was installed about 5 years ago, so I hope that there is a bit of service life left.

    Pentair Pump Suddenly Stopped Working

Jim: Following your suggestion, I am getting 240V to the pump. This raises a couple of questions: 1. If indeed the control head has failed, is this an easily replaced component or would it be best to call a service tech (at least to verify that the control head is the issue)? 2. If I am...

Thank you, Jim. I will follow up on your suggestion.

    Pentair Pump Suddenly Stopped Working

I have a Pentair Variable Speed Intelliflo pump that suddenly stop working. I tried to start the pump through the Pentair Easy Touch control panel as well as with the SpaSide buttons with no luck. Finally I switch the Easy Touch panel to Service mode so that I could start the pump directly from...

Heater Cycling Before Reaching Set Temperature

Well, seems like the heater is out of warranty. So I replaced the thermal regulator & all seems well. Thank you so much for your guidance. Truly appreciated!

Heater Cycling Before Reaching Set Temperature

JamesW: Just wanted to follow up on your last reply. I noted that the High Limit Switch LED was illuminated. Based on your explanation, I can see where the rusty thermal regulator could be the culprit. To eliminate other possible causes, I cleaned the filters & verified that the rpms were 1,800...

Heater Cycling Before Reaching Set Temperature

I removed the thermal regulator & noted that there was an accumulation of rust on the unit. I removed the regulator & ran hot water over it. The unit opened up about 1/8". Is that normal or should it open more? I ran it under hot water after I cleaned the rust off as best as I could. There was...

Heater Cycling Before Reaching Set Temperature

Thank you. In fact I have the manual. I will follow the diagnostic tree the best that I can. By the way, where are the "LED diagnostics" you are referring to? On the heater readout panel or on the EasyTouch control box?

Heater Cycling Before Reaching Set Temperature

There doesn't appear to be any air in the pump basket. The temperature of the water flow seems normal (i.e. not excessively hot). Also, no unusual noises from the heater while it is cycling on & off. I am not familiar with the location of the water temperature sensor, but is it possible that it...

Heater Cycling Before Reaching Set Temperature

My in-ground spa is run with Pentair equipment. The water temperature is set to 98F. I noticed today that when the temperature reached 96F, the heater shuts off. After about 30 seconds, it fires back up for about 20 seconds & then shuts off again. This cycle repeats itself without the water...

    Covered or Uncovered?

I am SLAMming my spa. During the process, can I safely leave the spa covered? Thank you.

    Water Turnover Cycle

I agree. But I was thinking that (for example) if I add a specific amount of liquid chlorine to the water, how long would it take to reach maximum dilution. This way I could ascertain whether I needed to add additional chlorine. Does that make sense?

    Water Turnover Cycle

I have a curious question. Based on a specific speed (rpm) of a Pentair Variable Speed pump, is there a way to determine the amount of time it takes for the total volume of water in a 2,500-gallon spa to complete one turnover cycle? Thank you.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully I can avoid the spiking FC in the future.

Again, thank you for the info. One question though: Is the hydrogen peroxide that is commonly available of sufficient strength compared to the same product made specifically for pool application?

    Spiking FC

Oops! My bad! For some reason the water volume in the Pool Math calculator was 10,000 gallons. I thought something was wrong. The volume might have reverted to default when I migrated the data from my old computer to the new one. Thanks for the correction!

    Spiking FC

I used a product called Thio-Trine which is apparently sodium thiosulfate. I did not know that hydrogen peroxide was an alternative. Thank you for the tip!! Looks like I have all of the chemistry back within range, except TA = 50ppm. Aiming for a target of 100, I was surprised that 94 oz. of...

    Spiking FC

My thinking regarding the SWCG is the same. SO, I picked up a dummy cell & will replace the SWCG today. That should address any possibility that the SWCG wasn't completely shutting off. To reduce the high FC level, I added a small amount of granular chlorine neutralizer. I will check the FC...

    Spiking FC

Earlier in this thread, Marty asked me what my CC level was. I checked it today & it's 2.0. This is obviously high. But is this related in any way to the current high FC level of 18? Thank you.

    Spiking FC

I rely on the FAS-DPD test (in the TF-100 test kit)for checking FC weekly. Every 2-3 days I use the OTO test. Everything being said, I am still stumped on the FC level spiking. If I cannot determine what is the cause, I will assume that the SWCG is somehow producing chlorine even though it is...

    Spiking FC

Thanks, Marty. I run the heater during the 2-hr. pump runtime in the early evening so that if we decide to use the spa, the set temperature of 98F will be reached more quickly. Also, during the winter months, the ambient temperature can drop into the teens or even to single digits.

    Spiking FC

Thank you, Marty. Would it be preferable to have the cover open while the heater is running?
  30. K

    Spiking FC

No, actually the cover stays on all the time when not in use. Maybe I should leave it open for a awhile each day to let the UV rays eat up some of the chlorine. I was also thinking about removing the SWCG during the winter & putting in a "dummy" unit in its place. The spa temp is set for 65F. Of...
