Repair separation tank lip with JB waterweld

Just had another idea... found a listing for an old tank for a Hayward StarClear Plus cartridge filter available online. It looks strangely,... similar to the DE separation tank on the Hayward web page, Hayward even uses the same exact photo on the respective information web pages. Do you think...

LED pool light bulb swap - 120v or 12v?

Hi all. One of my incandescent pool lights went out and i've purchased some LED replacements off of Amazon. I didn't realize until I received it that I may have purchased the wrong bulbs, as they come in 12v and 120v flavors. From the look of the photos below, is it immediately obvious which I...

Repair separation tank lip with JB waterweld

I know you are right. Just can't get over the feeling that these tanks, that are outdated at this time, are exorbitantly expensive. I'd hate to hate to buy a whole new one. The thing is made of plastic, so isn't anything sophisticated so just pisses me off. I suppose the alternative is just to...

Repair separation tank lip with JB waterweld

I have no experience doing this kind of stuff, but was contemplating some kind of wire across to support the shape. I suspect you're probably right though,... it'll be hard to seal up. There is a round o-ring gasket in there to help seal. Hmmm.

Repair separation tank lip with JB waterweld

Just curious on folks opinion. I have a separation tank (I know I can do without one and just send to waste but I have no where to drain/dump to on my property) that has some damage on the lip of the tank. I wondered if based on the photos, I might get away with applying some waterweld, roughly...

Ha Richard, that makes a lot more sense now. Will look into it!

Bondo or plaster to repair broken DE separation tank?

Thanks for the recommendations guys. Here is a video of what the backwash cycle currently looks like ... (this is the "guy" I hired and yes, I did notice that he didn't bother shutting off the pump when switching modes at the multiport... he owes me a new spider gasket!!) @Richard320, the...

Bondo or plaster to repair broken DE separation tank?

Thanks @JohnT. It's not quite pressured really... when the multiport is set to "backwash", a 1.5" pipe moves the water through the separation tank and out another 1.5" pipe on the other side of the separation tank, back into the pool. It's effectively just a passthrough, so would only be subject...

Bondo or plaster to repair broken DE separation tank?

Hi all. I have a DE separation tank that had some cracks and ultimately, has two lip pieces broken off at the top of the plastic tank where the lid connects. As such, there is now no seal on the lid as the tank o-ring doesn’t sit against anything so is useless. I had tried in the past to repair...

Help with DE filter losing prime after running for 2-3 hours

Hi @jblizzle, you are right, that is not minor but more than double. What’s odd is that usual operating pressure for me was always about 15psi. It has only been as low as 10psi when first rinsing off the filters and before adding DE and perhaps after swapping out the cracked elbow inside the de...

Help with DE filter losing prime after running for 2-3 hours

Hi @lekmedm, I also thought the same as you and ended up changing the pump, all new plumbing for everything above ground and even that $100 elbow part in the bottom of the DE filter as well as new grids. In the end, after spending $1500, it was indeed the live algae as despite all the above, the...

Help with DE filter losing prime after running for 2-3 hours

For the record, you guys were all spot on of course. The live algae was what was clogging the new grids. Ran pump on recirculate at SLAM levels for 2 days, and now, all has been filtering just fine. Water has been balanced and crystal clear for a week now. Just waiting for the weather to warm...

Help with DE filter losing prime after running for 2-3 hours

Ok thanks all. Wished I had checked in prior to spending money on the pool guy troubleshooting mechanicals. Just added 5 gallons of 12.5% chlorine to take my Cl up to SLAM level and running on recirculate. Will keep up chemicals every few hours and check back in a day or two. Guess it’s never...

Help with DE filter losing prime after running for 2-3 hours

Thank you Jim and Duraleigh. The problem is maintaining SLAM levels when the pump fails to circulate water after a few hours on filter. I suppose I can skip the filter and just recirculate until all the algae is dead. The pool actually is not green, just cloudy as I have been maintaining...

Help with DE filter losing prime after running for 2-3 hours

Hi all... this have been racking my brain on end. Even hired a pool company, who came and could not figure out. $1k down the drain in a new pump, new filter grids, chemicals, new plumbing ball valves, and labor from a pool company still cannot get the pool season started... The issue is that I...

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

Its a one man pool company. He came recommended on NextDoor.com. This is his finished work. He changed the old valves with three new Praher Ball valves and a cracked elbow inside the base of the DE tank (Another ~$250 in parts aone ouch!) The job seems satisfactory and I don't see any leaks. My...

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

Ok, turns out there is still a problem. Had a guy come and replace all the above ground plumbing with all new valves and unions to the pump. The pump, seals, and gaskets are all brand new. The filter grids in the DE filter are all now also brand new.... Pump now loses prime on filter after...

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

$750 ($250 troubleshooting and $500 pump) poorer and i've learned my lesson.... Turns out I'm an idiot. On the upper side of that large union (plumbing to multivalve), I always put a rubber stopper to prevent any water from going in (which is not necessary since it is upside down).... Removing...

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

Kept trying and could not find it. Stopped by the pool store and plumbing supply and it seems like I also cannot easily replace the plumbing that comes up out of the pump (so that I could use the new wet side of pump that I did not use since I leveraged the old to avoid replacing plumbing...)...

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

Yes, this leak is probably what broke the last motor. It died as I was closing the pool at the end of the season. I hope it's nothing underground... At this time, I checked: -the lid gasket. I have used pool lube and even placed a piece of plastic over the top before screwing down and no...

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

Nope, just tied a bunch of plastic bags tight around it with bungee and held on to it with no luck. Let me try something with the lid.

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

Hmmmm, the union/connector in the middle has a Crack In it, but I would imagine that there would be tremendous air coming out if I put my hand under it but no air (or water).

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

Sigh... ordered an installed the new pump (well I kept the wet side and changed out the motor). Same issue with the suction side leak (good call duraleigh), as there doesn't seem to be any pressure on the line. I don't see or hear any leaks anywhere though... Any tips on how to best troubleshoot...

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

Nevermind, I just ordered a direct replacement. I'm sure I'll sell the house before I recoup the difference in pump price (it costs double)! With TFPC, I only run the pump about 5 hours a day and still manage a clean 48k gallon pool!

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

Thank you. Just called two Leslies locations and it turns out per company policy, they are not allowed to touch the inside of the motors. They can only replace/repair external elements, like seals, gaskets, etc. Sounds like this can be DIY, but can be a real pain if I don't have the proper tools...

Pump losing prime on filter -- following a comedy of errors

Hi everyone. Happy start of pool season to those in the Northeast! As I was closing the pool last season, I heard the pump starting to rattle and whine. Figured the pump was going... Before connecting it this season, I removed the impeller on my Hayward Super Pump and checked the bearings etc...

Cloudy pool after 6 days straight running filter

Ok, 2 week’s after memorial day and the pool is finally clear. Still not super sparkling but good enough to see the bottom clearly. Don’t know what it was but there was a fine silt everywhere along the floor of the pool. Not sure if it was excess calcium in powder form (from 50lbs of snow melt...
